John Owens (1831-1892) was a Welshman who spent 1853-1863 in Australia, predominantly on the Bendigo goldfields. He was a miner who also initially set up a horse drawn puddling machine, although he sold this in 1857. He gave first hand insight into life on the goldfields through letters he wrote home to his parents. He returned to Wales in 1863 and in 1864 he married his uncles widow, Jane Davis. Jane died in 1872 and John then married Mary Ellen Jackson.Letter fromCharles Patersonaccompanying donation of two books 5316.1 Letters from Bendigo 5316.2 Letters from the Bendigo Diggings Both books spiral bound and contain coloured prints & maps. Bottle, J Fletcher Warrnambool, Early 20th century
This bottle came from the Warrnambool aerated waters manufacturer, John Fletcher. This factory was commenced in the mid 19th century by John Davis. As a young boy John Fletcher worked in the cordial factory of John Rowley in Banyan Street, Warrnambool and then worked for John Davis at his Union Cordial Factory for many years. In 1885 he succeeded John Davis in this business. Fletcher’s business continued until1930 when it was bought by another soft drinks manufacturer, Ralph Reeves. John Fletcher manufactured aerated waters, soda, tonic water, lemonade, ginger ale, hop beer, hop bitters, sarsaparilla and cordials. This bottle is of interest because it is a John Fletcher bottle and he was a prominent soft drinks manufacturer in Warrnambool for over 40 years. This is a clear glass bottle. It has a round base and a rounded body tapering in the neck to a round moulded open top. The stopper or seal is missing. The bottle has embedded lettering with details of the manufacturer of the contents.‘John Fletcher Trade Mark (crown symbol) Warrnambool’ ‘This bottle is the property of John Fletcher Warrnambool & cannot be legally used by others’ john fletcher, warrnambool, cordial manufacturers in warrnambool, history of warrnambool -

Painting - Watercolour on Whatman’s paper mounted on board, John Borrack, Winter Frost, Yan Yean, 1979
“This old farmhouse on the east of Ridge Road, has now disappeared. A particularly fine spell of clear frosty June days, prompted a number of early morning "frost" paintings in Mernda and districts. The painting owes something to tonal impressionism. At the time I had been elected a member of the "20 Melbourne Painters", (a rather conservative body of tonal artists) from which I later resigned. However, the importance of tonal values and the decisive balance of light and dark tones cannot be dismissed in painting. By painting into the light, the tonal qualities of a picture can often be more decisively understood and expressed. In this instance the sparkle of white paper and the deeper tones of the massed foliage contribute to the light effect. Such paintings are made for one's own enjoyment and are a spontaneous reaction to an effect that moves one to do something about it.” John BorrackPart of the John and Gillian Borrack Federation Bequest, donated to the City of Whittlesea in December 2001 by Gillian and John BorrackJohn Borrack '79. Painting - Watercolour on Saunders Medium Paper mounted on board, John Borrack, The Farm, South Morang, 1986
This is a conventional watercolour. This fine old farm with its beautiful white barn was a landmark in South Morang until its demolition in the late 1970's. It was one of the first subjects in the area that I painted in the early 1950's. I later learnt from Alan Sumner, friend, painter and onetime head of the National Gallery School, that he constantly painted the same subject, as no doubt did other artists before him. I was quite upset about its demise, with the erection of a service station on the site. The two red gums are still there. In view of the quickening development of the area in which many historic landmarks, buildings and landscapes were disappearing, I painted the picture in my earlier more picturesque style purely to serve as a historical record of another lost legacy of the Plenty Valley. The early afternoon light and shadows through the red gums which frame the barn and outbuildings are all painted with a direct fluency on wet paper, to which the crisper touches were added after the initial stages were dry. The colour scheme evokes a typical summer's day and is uniquely Australian.Part of the John and Gillian Borrack Federation Bequest, donated to the City of Whittlesea in December 2001 by Gillian and John BorrackJohn Borrack 86 The Farm, Sth Morangsouth morang -

Photograph, Edward Joseph Price and Grandson
John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the district working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Edward Joseph Price took out Lot 1, Section 1 of the Village Settlement and became the first settler, moving his family up into a slab hut on his selection in 1896. Edward Joseph had two sons (Charles Joseph and Edward John) and a daughter (Kathleen Nathalie Caroline). Edward Joseph Price is holding his grandson Teddie, son of Edward John Price. Photo taken 1936.Black and white photograph in close up showing an old man with a white beard wearing a brimmed hat holding a male toddler under the arms. Joseph was the first settler in the Village Settlement choosing LOT 1, part of which is still family property (1974). He worked for the surveyors who were marking out the blocks, and disregarded their advice as to which had the best soil, and so doing he obtained the best commercially. He died in 1943 leaving two sons & daughter. Edward John born 1899 died 1974. Charles born 1892 died 1958. Kathleen born 1895 died 1954.
