Postcard - Document, postcard, 1992
A postcard to the Comradeship Committee when a Legatee was travelling in England. It is addressed to Mr T Walsh at Legacy. It is dated 12 June 1992. It says: Dear Terry and all. We've had 4 days ON Dartmoor, not IN Dartmoor. In view of our name, we keep a low profile so as not to be invited to stay!! Most of the Moor is a very beautiful place, especially around Widecombe-in-the-Moor! We're keeping well and should see you all in the middle of August. Give our kind regards to all our Legacy friends. Thanks, John and Nancy C.A record of a Legatee travelling and relating experiences back to his comrades in Melbourne.Colour postcard of Dartmoor Prison.Printed "Dartmoor Prison, Princetown". 33p UK postage stamp. Photograph, Dr Paul Fox, Front veranda of 34 Zetland Road, Surrey Hills, 1976
The correct spelling of the family is POWNE (REF: electoral rolls, BDM records). May Trebilcock Powne (15/9/1906-2/7/2009), referred to by the donor, was the daughter of Charles Powne (1871-1926) and May Trebilcock (1882-1974), both of whom are buried in Box Hill Cemetery as is their daughter May. Probate gives his occupation as collector for the Metropolitan Gas Company. His death notice gives the name of the property as "St Columb". The Pownes had 2 other daughters: Linda Merle (1914-1997) and Nancy Helen (1916-1996). This home was owned by the same family from the time it was built for approximately 90 years.A colour photo with rounded corners of part of the front veranda of a red brick home, the details of which would place it as Edwardian style. The red brick is tuck-pointed and has a horizontal band of render, painted cream, as are the door surrounds and the arched timber fretwork. There are 6 steps leading up to the veranda, which appears to be timber, painted deep red. There is a cane chair on the veranda and climbing roses and erigeron daisies either side of the steps. On the rear in grey pencil in Paul Fox's writing: "Front verandah / 34 Zetland Rd / The Powneys home / in Zetland / Road Mont / Albert. / The Powneys / came to Zetland / Road in 1917. / At that time only / Whitehorse Rd was / sealed. / Tsken by Paul Fox / c 1976 when their / daughter May lived there."may trebilcock powne, charles powne, may trebilcock, may powne (mrs), linda merle powne, nancy helen powne, edwardian style, zetland road, st columb, house names, box hill cemetery -

In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had 4 daughters – Francis (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved From Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. This doll was given to Nancy Turner (born 22/12/1911) for her 3rd birthday. The clothes were handmade by her mother Mrs Beatrice Turner. Celluloid is one of the first synthetic plastics ever created. It is made from wood products that include cellulose nitrate and camphor. First created in 1863, it was a popular material to make items as diverse as jewellery and dolls from the 1870s through the 1930s. Celluloid is flammable, deteriorates easily if exposed to moisture and can be prone to cracking and yellowing. This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. It is also representative of a domestic item common in the 1930s.Celluloid doll dressed in home made clothing. Functional object - Notebook, 1940s
As this notebook has the name 'Gat Sing' on the last page it is presumed that it belonged to Charles Gat Sing. He had a market garden on Mortlake Rd, Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century. He initially lived in a hessian-lined hut but later built a weatherboard house. He married Nellie Leeong Sen in 1928 and they had two children, Ruth and Nancy. The family were well-known and respected in the Warrnambool community. Gat Sing died in 1944 and his wife died in 1989. Two of the receipts in the notebook are made out to Ruth Gat Sing and it is possible the notebook belonged to her, following the death of her father. This notebook is of considerable interest as a memento of the Chinese market gardener community in Warrnambool and of Gat Sing and his familyThis is a notebook with blank pages held in a brown leather folder by a brown cord. There is a brown ribbon on the outside of the folder for enclosing the notebook therein. The front cover has an insert folder for storing papers and the back cover has insert folders for cards, tickets and stamps. The notebook has a mottled cover, mostly in the green shades. There is a folded section at the side to enclose a pencil. There are three loose receipts in the notebook. Gat Singgat sing and family, warrnambool chinese market gardeners -

Photograph - Black and White, Ballarat Teachers' College, 1947, 1947
Ballarat Teachers' College was opened on may 4th, 1926, at S.S. 33, Dana Street, with an enrollment of sixty-one students, its original staff consisted of the Principal, Mr W. H. Ellwood, M.A., m.Ed. (Chairman of the Teachers' tribunal from its inception in 1946 until 1954), Miss A. Bouchier, B.A., and Mr A.B. Jones, B.A. (Lecturers). In 1927 Miss P.A. Hamano joined the staff. Teaching practice and special rural school work were carried on in schools in or near Ballarat - drawing, crafts and singing were taught by local teachers. In 1927 the college moved to the old Ballarat East Town Hall (remodelled for their use) in Barkly Street. During 1927 the numbers in the College were augmented by twenty-six Manual arts students who had formerly received their training at Ballarat High School. Manual Arts students continued till 1930, when, on grounds of economy, their training was concentrated at Melbourne Teachers' College.\During the four succeeding years approximately sixty students annually entered the primary course. Inclusive of Manual Arts students, and private fee-paying students, exactly 400 trainees passed through the college in its brief span of life (1926-1931) Fourteen years were to pass before they were again opened to students on February 2nd, 1946. The college was re-commenced at S.S. Dana Street under the guidance of Mr W.F. Lord, M.C., M.M., B.A., Dip.Ed., (Acting Principal 1946-1950), and a staff consisting of Miss E.B. Hughes, B.A., Dip. Ed., Mr C.B. Bryan, B.A., V.Com., Dip.Ed., Miss M.H. Miller, L.Mus.A., and Miss G. Kentish, Dip.Phys.Ed. The opening ceremony was performed by the Minister for education at that time, the Hon. F. Field, M.L.A., accompanied by the Hon. T.T. Hollway, M.L.A., and the then Director of Education, Mr J.A. Seitz. It was originally intended to cater for women students only (for whom 130 Victoria Street was purchased as a hostel) but, at the last moment, men were also accepted. A co-educational college was thus set up instead, and has continued as such. The original Staff has been considerable augmented, and the number of Students has been more than trebled. 1951 saw the introduction of the two-year course, successful students being presented with the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate at the final College assembly each year. In December, 1855, College held its first Graduation Ceremony, with its own Graduation hymn, the words of which were written by Miss C.M. Canty of the staff. Mr Ellwood, former Principal, delivered the occasional address and presented the Ellwood Prize to the outstading student of the year (Mr C.P. Handreck). Students who had successfully completed the course received their certificates from Mr E.B. Pederick, Chief Inspector of Primary Schools. College accomodation having been strained for several years, it was pleasant news when tenders were called in July, 1956, for the building of the first section of the new Ballarat Teachers' College in Gillies Street, near the Botanical Gardens. At the beginning of 1958 the new College was occupied, and staff and students have appreciated greatly the appointments and cacilities of the new buildign. In 1968 the three-year Diploma Course began, co-existent with the other courses which will continue during the transitional period. Successful students in the course receive the Diploma of Teaching (Primary).Black and white photograph of students and staff of the Ballarat Teachers' College. Program, The Arcadions' Wurzel - Flummens, 1934
This is a program for two plays staged by The Arcadians in 1934. This drama group was originally known as the Warrnambool High School Ex-Students’ Dramatic Society and was founded in 1925 by Colonel Langley, the Head Master of Warrnambool High School and his wife, Edmee. The Arcadians drama group was still operating in 1947 and proceeds from the productions went to the Warrnambool High School, funding many school projects including a tennis court, a Senior English prize and Watson Hall. By 1934 a special project was the funding of the ‘Langley Library’. Notable among The Arcadians performers were Colonel George Langley (in the early years of the group), Horace Jones, an English teacher at the school, Syb Carpenter, Bill Earle, Mary and Ron Mack and Nancy Humm. This programme is of particular interest as an example of the plays staged by the well-known Warrnambool drama group, The Arcadians. This is a programme made of two sheets of green paper folded in two to make eight pages. The printing is in black. The sheets were originally stapled but the metal staples have been removed. The inscription is handwritten in blue ink. ‘N. J.
