The Queenstown Cemetery (1861-1981) is a pioneer and miner’s cemetery, established during the gold rush of the 1850’s at the site of the first mining village of the Caledonia Diggings. A Cemetery Trust administers the cemetery with the support of The Friends and Relations of Queenstown Cemetery and endeavours to maintain and preserve it for future generations. In October 2006, Orbost Secondary College 9/10 Enhancement Studies Class worked to preserve the memories of the Orbost community with three short films describing recollections of Orbost floods. There are ten stories including memories of the 1952, 1971 and 1991 floods. They are narrated by various Orbost identities - Anne Bridges; Kay Lynn; Ken Edlington; Margaret Adams; Max Reynols; Shirley Reynolds and Ngaere Donald.Floods have been part of the history of Orbost since settlement. Special issue of the Rutherglen Sun to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rutherglen Shire. This issue may be one of the few available, as it does not appear to have been included in the bound copies of the Rutherglen Sun held by the State Library of Victoria, from which microfilm copies of these papers were produced. Part of our history on display These mementos were collected by Jock Sturrock’s wife Betty on their trips around the world to yacht clubs and sailing events. This collection has been lovingly preserved by Betty’s bother Doug Jones, his wife Elaine and their daughters Michelle and Claudia, who have donated it to Royal Brighton Yacht Club for members to enjoy. This replica booklet documenting the details of the winning races by the thoroughbred racehorse Phar Lap shows the continuing interest today in the exploits of Phar Lap in the 1930s. Phar Lap captured the imagination of the Australian public during the Great Depression with his 37 wins from 51 starts, including a Melbourne Cup. He died in the USA in 1932 in controversial circumstances. At the time he was the third highest stakes winner in the world. His preserved hide is on display at the Melbourne Museum.This booklet is of some interest as Phar Lap is Australia’s best known racehorse. The booklet could be used in exhibits.This is a small booklet of 48 pages containing the details of the racehorse Phar Lap’s 37 race victories in the years 1930, 1931 and 1932. It has a reproduction colour image on the front cover of a painting of Phar Lap and his jockey from the 1930 Melbourne Cup Day Official Programme. This apron was made in 1915 by Irene Broughton, nee Long. She was born in Warrnambool in 1894 and married Arthur Broughton in 1913. She re married in 1924 Reuben Donnithorne and he died in 1931. Irene died in 1982 and is buried in the Warrnambool cemetery. The apron was left to Irene's niece, Helen Thomson who had the apron framed to preserve it. The apron would not have been in everyday use but a special garment worn when entertaining visitors for afternoon tea.This apron is a fine example of a home made house hold article from the early 20th century. The maker was born in Warrnambool.The apron is made of fine black cotton and edged with a broad lace flounce featuring a flower pattern. It is decorated with two sprays of delicately hand-painted motifs featuring Australian native flowers. The apron is in a wooden frame with a silver metal edging with scrolls on the front edge. This brass registration plate was once attached to the former Sunshine District Community Hospital in King Edward Avenue, Albion, 3020. The hospital, under several names, served the local community since the 1920's. It became the Sunshine District Community Hospital in 1946 and was closed in 1989. The building was demolished and replaced by residential units. The plate was preserved by Carol Duvall a long serving nurse, who about 20 years later donated it to the Sunshine and District Historical Society.This brass plate is a rare physical relic of what was once the main hospital serving the Sunshine area, and in which many local babies were born.Tarnished brass plate with indented or carved lettering finished in black paint. The black paint is showing signs of deterioration. The plate has six holes for attaching it to a wall, and two of the corners have been bent probably during the removal of the plate. This is a copy of Bromfield’s 1856 map of Warrnambool and district. James Astley Bromfield was a pioneer settler in Warrnambool. He established a chemist’s shop in 1854, initially situated in Timor Street. He moved his shop to Liebig Street with a new building erected in 1875. Bromfield was a prominent resident of Warrnambool (Shire Councillor, Fire Brigade member, Cricket Club member, associated with horse racing etc). He was interested in preserving the history of Warrnambool and this map he produced in 1856 was an example of this interest.This is a copy only but this 1856 map is of prime importance as it contains the names of the original landowners of land in north Warrnambool and the surrounding district.
