In 1982 computers where not yet an essential part of office administration or learning at school. Lauriston was still teaching students how to use electric typewriters in 1984. Lauriston’s very first sports photograph is in 1905, of our students standing with their hockey sticks to mark their participation in the Girls’ Schools’ Hockey Association. Hockey was without doubt the “Queen of Games” at Lauriston during the school’s early decades. The school’s founders Miss Margaret and Miss Lilian Irving were firm believers in the character-building nature of team sports and were instrumental in establishing hockey as a competitive sport for girls in Melbourne. Lauriston’s founders Lilian Irving one of the two sisters who founded Lauriston, saw hockey played in England and brought the game back to Melbourne. Lilian arranged for the first girls inter-school hockey match, between Lauriston and Ruyton in 1903. Her sister Margaret subsequently joined with Mary Morris of Melbourne Girls’ Grammar to establish the Girls’ Schools’ Hockey Association in 1905. The Association organised regular competitions between schools. Hockey dominated Lauriston’s sporting life until well into the 1950s, with regular class, house, inter-school, and staff-student matches. B & W photo 14 x 18.7 cm, mounted on brown card, with inscription in white ink “Lauriston Hockey Eleven 1905”. Underneath the photograph on the mount are names of the players in three rows according to the arrangement in the photograph. The students standing in the back row are N. Stewart’ G. Mogg, D. Elder, M. Elliott (Captain), J. Tuthill, C. McWhae and E. Stewart. The students knelling in the middle row are S. Mitchell (emergency), M. Rigby, and J. Mitchell. Melton City Libraries
Newspaper, Mowbray Funding, Unknown
" Designed by architect Norman Day, the school was built in an innovative postmodern style. Day’s vision was for the school’s students to feel as comfortable and familiar at school as in their own homes. He based the design on the local suburban typology. The buildings consisted of individual self-contained classrooms, each with a front door, back door and garden. Each class retained the same homeroom for the duration of their schooling. Norman Day won the inaugural Lustig & Moar Architectural Prize in 1988 for his Mowbray College design, and the Australian Library Promotion Council/RAIA Library Design Award for the school’s library building. The school officially opened on 7 February 1983 with an enrolment of 93 students from Prep to Year 7. Mark Fergus was a Prep student in the school’s inaugural year. He later remembered: It was good then because everyone knew each other. Our first few weeks at school we had classes in the Guide Hall because the Mill wasn’t finished. The rest of the school where the Labs and Coppin Court are now was only a big paddock. Another Prep student, Brooke Harrison, recalled: The only recreation we had was the rough playground which consisted of monkey bars, old tractor tyres and a sandpit and high bars. Accidents were a frequent occurrence in those days! It was a friendly atmosphere, you know everyone and their business ... During some classes we used to do horticultural work and planted trees out the front of the school. In 2003, Mowbray College celebrated two decades of educating students in Melton. By that stage, the school had expanded to two campuses with over 1,450 students and 120 staff. It was estimated that over the twenty years since its establishment, 13,000 students passed through the gates. By the mid-2000s, the school offered an International Baccalaureate program and operated across three campuses: the original campus, named Patterson after the first principal, and the Brookside and Town Centre campuses, both located in Caroline Springs. Unfortunately, in 2012 Mowbray College found itself in an unmanageable situation. The community had lost faith in the school’s financial security and as a result some parents withheld their school fees, fearing the school would collapse. It had been in financial difficulty since the mid-2000s and by 2012 was $28 million in debt. 84 In June 2012, all three campuses closed and within four months, each of the campuses of the former Mowbray College had been purchased by other education institutes. Heathdale Christian College bought the original Mowbray campus and established its own campus there and Grace Children’s Services bought the Brookside campus. The Town Centre campus was purchased by Intaj Khan from the Western Institute of Technology but remained vacant after some failed attempts at re-establishing a school. In 2017 the Australian International Academy established an Islamic school on the site".The Express article about a grant for Mowbray Collegeeducation -

It extended students for a further 2 years of secondary schooling. In 1938 the school was declared a higher elementary school with 90 students in the secondary classes. Following rapid growth after the Second World War, the High School was established as a separate school in 1954 with 249 students and the primary students were relocated to premises in Ariel Street. However it rapidly became evident that a new school building needed to be established to cater for growing enrolments and specialist facilities. After persistent pressure from the Advisory Council, Stage 1 of the new school was built and occupied by Form 1 and 2 students in 1960. The final stages were completed during term 3, 1962. The official opening of the new Wodonga High School was declared by The Hon. J. S. Furniture - Object, Burnbank Street Methodist Sunday School Honor Board
This honour board is thought to have been made to a design by a student of the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. "Honor Boards. — During the past few months very many honor boards have been manufactured by Messrs R. Tunbridge and Sons, and their handsome design and workmanship have given complete satisfaction to purchasers. Some time ago, the firm gave five guineas, for prizes to the architectural class at the School of Mines for the best honor board designs, and some magnificent suggestions were submitted by the competitors. Messrs Tunbridge and Sons, in adopting this plan, gave encouragement to the students to develop along the lines of originality in architecture, and at the same time secure a very fine collection of designs. The whole of the honor boards turned out by the firm are of local manufacture and only the very choicest of Australian timbers are used. As Tunbridge and Sons have made the manufacture of honor boards a speciality they are employing a couple of first-class cabinetmakers on the work of making honor hoards only, and the lettering is also done by a local firm. An honor board which has just been completed by Tunbridge and Sons is at present on view in the firm's window facing Sturt street. It is for Holy Trinity Church, Stawell, is manufactured from Queensland maple, beautifully grained, and is of handsome gothic design. This honor Board is 8 feet in height, and measures 5 feet 6 inches across, and it contains 142 names, including 10 heroes who have won distinctions, and 37 soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice. Tunbridge and Sons have manufactured honor boards for Miners' Rest:, Weatherboard, Scotchman's Lead, Durham lead, the Buninyong Methodist Church, Ballarat Shire south riding, St. Arnaud High School, Knox Sunday School, and Bungaree Shire Council, and there are boards for the Watchem South State School, and Springdallah in hand. People are realising that there is no need to go to Melbourne for honor boards, which are manufactured by Tunbridge and Sons of superior material, and are better finished and their prices are much below metropolitan rates." (Ballarat Star, 27 April 1918) Geoffrey Blainey's father was the pastor at the Burnbank Methodist church. Geoffrey Blainey became the first Chancellor of the University of Ballarat, a predecessor of Federation University Australia. The Honour Board was removed from the Wendouree Uniting Church when it was closed on August November 2019.
