Interview of three persons, members of the Temple Society, who were arrested in Palestine during World War 2 as "enemy aliens". They were transported to Australia on the "Queen Elizabeth" which was being used at that time, as a troop ship. As part of a group of approximately 650 men, women and children from Palestine,they were held in internment Camp 3, Tatura, from 1941 until 1947. Those internees who chose to remain in Australia after the war were released at such time as they were able to obtain employment and accommodation. These items belonged to Wilhelm Eckels who was a wool buyer in Sydney when the war broke out. He was interned in Camp 1, aged 22. Else-Lore Oertel, with her mother, was a German internee in Camp 3A as a child, from 1940-1945. The ballerina & stand were made by persons unknown & given to Else-Lore while in the camp & was one of her childhood 'treasures'.Hand painted thin plywood decoration of ballerina inside a ring / circle, with wooden stand. Outer circle shape with insert for stand, cut out of ballerina posed inside. All carved from one piece of plywood. Circle is painted purple. Ballerina inside circle is plain plywood painted with mainly yellow, blue & white costume. Stand is flat disc with slot for ballerina cutout to insert into. Stand is painted gold. In 1943 German internees in camp 3 (Victoria) decided to produce theatre productions of their German heritage to familiaize their children with their culture/to keep everyone busy/ interested/ and involved as a community. A comment was made that this exercise was very successful.Kept the German culture alive in the camp.
