Else Oertel was an internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. Else (a German) was interned in a camp where Russian was being taught & so took up lessons. Her husband was away on business in Germany at the outbreak of war and was not interned with them & therefore Else was also motivated to learn Russian because it was possible she would be repatriated to the Russian sector of Germany at the end of the war (namely Chemnitz, Saxony). Else-Lore Oertel, with her mother, was a German internee in Camp 3A as a child, from 1940-1945. The ballerina & stand were made by persons unknown & given to Else-Lore while in the camp & was one of her childhood 'treasures'.Hand painted thin plywood decoration of ballerina inside a ring / circle, with wooden stand. Outer circle shape with insert for stand, cut out of ballerina posed inside. All carved from one piece of plywood. Circle is painted purple. Jack Sharpley lived in Erica Av. Tatura. His father was a P.M.G. Linesman c.1939. Jack attended Tatura Convent & Shepparton High School. Joined staff of State Savings Bank, and attended Melbourne University. Entered Air Force in Air Training Corps 1941. Trained in Canada as a Flight Observer. Posted to a Sunderland Flying Boat Squadron in England. Killed 04.02.1943 in a flying accident off the coast of Wales. Original letter are in the hands of Ludwig's son.
