From an email from Rod Atkins 29/7/2019: This Stevenson six widow saloon horse tram No 46 is fairly standard. The horse cars did not have wheel skirts like the cable trams 6 and 8 window cars. Sitting at the terminus in High Street at Parkhill Road at the gates of the Boroondara General Cemetery ready for its return trip to Richmond. The tram is being run one man. Note the location of gates, pay as you enter the front step. The driver has a conductors bag around his neck and waist. No conductor present in the photo. His uniform is classic Company issue. He is wearing a Tunic and vest! And early issue cap with a white band. Date: around circa 1900 as the clock tower, brick wall and cast iron fence are all in place and the car number is faded out. I have seen a photo of a tram there with no clock tower from around the opening of the line. All tramway platform crew were issued with a cap and were expected to wear it at all times. The number being the principal identification number for the public and Inspectors.Demonstrates uniform cap manufacture.Drivers/Conductors cap - navy blue cloth exterior, black cotton interior lining, with a plastic band at the front half of the cap terminating in two small MMTB metal buttons on either side, and black (green underside) plastic beak. Photographs show the front, side and rear views of male and female models wearing the new brown coloured tram crew uniforms. They include male jacket with gold buttons, trousers, yellow shirt and brown tie. Female brown jacket with gold buttons, skirt and roll neck scivy. These uniforms were introduced for tram crews on the new Z class trams that entered service from 1975. These trams were painted in a distinctive orange and cream livery with brown coloured internal fittings. The photographs were taken against a plain cream wall with brown skirting board and carpet, possibly in part of the uniform factory at Hawthorn Tram Depot. Photograph shows a female uniformed employee sitting at the controls of a Y1 class tram with a male in a suit standing to her right with his left hand on the back of the small driver's seat. The leather curtain used to enclosed the driver is open and stowed to the right. The tram appears to be on a suburban street but is stationary as the closeup photograph is taken from outside the tram. As this class of tram was used to train drivers at the Hawthorn Depot driver training school, the location may be close to this depot. The sloping driver's windscreen and long upper side window identify it as Y1 class. The female employee's summer uniform dress and jacket were introduced in 1975. Caps were no longer required, replaced with employee number badges worn on the uniform. This undated photograph is significant because the first female driver, Joyce Barry, was finally approved as a driver in 1975 after years of strong resistance by the tramways union. The staff member pictured is not Driver Barry.
