Rev. Dr. William Morley (1842-1926) was born in Notting-Hampshire, England where he received early ministerial training. He was twenty when he arrived in New Zealand, where he was twice President of the Methodist Conference and then President of the General Conference. In 1902 he was called to Australia to take up the position of managing treasurer of the Supernumerary Minister's Fund. In 1891, Morley was a member of the second Methodist Ecumenical Conference at Washington and President of Queen's College Council 1909 - 1925. Rev. Desmond Tarran (1916 - 1992). Born at Werribee. Converted at age 15. Entered the Home Missionary Training College in 1936. Spent 29 years in many appointments including 3 years 1950 - 1952 in Inland Mission in the Murchison area, Western Australia. Enlisted as an army medical orderly in 1940. Served in the medical service in Palestine and was transferred to a forward casualty station, then taken prisoner by the Japanese in 1942. On the Death Railway in Thailand worked closely with Dr E. (Weary) Dunlop and Dr Albert Coates in caring for starving and maltreated prisoners. Returned to home mission service in 1947. In 1966 was selected for special ordination as a Methodist minister. The Rev A W Pederick was a chaplain who served in the New Guinea Campaign during WWII. His service included the Kokoda Trail. Brown leather carry case with a brown metal base, a carry handle and two lockable latches on the font. The box has a blue velvet lining. The box holds a paten, diameter 12.0 cm, and a wafer tin which are held in pouches in the lid. Two bottles with cork and silver lids are in fitted compartments inside the box which also contains a small white embroidered cloth. There is embossed gold lettering on the front of the box. The Rays' badge was adopted by General Grand Council in Melbourne in 1935 with the design being submitted by South Australia. It was not to be worn on the Rays' regalia. "The shape of the badge represented the love with which every child of God is encircled. The blue circle stood for loyalty, the ivy leaf for friendship as well as recognising the Rays as a section of the Methodist Girls' Comradeship, and the white background for purity of mind and heart. The gold lines represented the good deeds which go out from each young life as rays of light bring sunshine to others. This meaning was adopted at General Grand Council in Sydney in 1948. The World War One windows in the Barkly Street Uniting Church resulted from a request made in 1919 from the Barkly Street Young Men's Club who raised money to pay for the project. The window was designed by the Fisher Company, and was unveiled on 14 March 1920 at a total cost of 171 pounds 10 shillings. The windows are considered to be one of the most remarkable war memorial windows in Victoria, and the 1800s English Gothic-style front facade is believed to be protected by a City of Ballarat heritage overlay. Historical experts believe the windows were designed by renowned stained-glass window-maker William Montgomery. The centre window depicts a young soldier bearing an Anzac badge underneath the British and Australian flags. The image of the solider is surrounded by 24 crosses, a single dove and a bugle. Most of the ephemera assembled by Francis Rigg were patriotic buttons but also included come sporting event buttons including two associated with the East Kew Citizens Sports Carnival. The subdivision of the area now known as Kew East commenced before World War 1, but it was not until the 1920s that it became fully developed. At this time, there was a strong Progress Association and this body raised funds to purchase land and build the East Kew Citizen’s Hall in Normandy Road, the first stage of which was completed in 1922. This hall was designed to be extended, although this never occurred, and the building now forms part of the facilities of the East Kew Uniting Church. The ‘East Kew Citizens Sports Carnival’ may well have been a fundraiser event for the building fund. As far as is known, the carnival was only held for a couple of years.Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration in 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.A circular badge produced for the East Kew Citizens Sports Carnival in 1924.
