Rev. Archibald E. Newton (1893 - 1959) entered Home Mission work at Waratah. He commenced his ministry in 1927 at Mt. Lyell and Strahan in Tasmania, and subsequently served at Wynard (1930), Wycheproof (1933), Traralgon (1937), Pascoe Vale & Merlynston (1943). He was appointed chaplain to metropolitan gaols in 1941, and from 1946 he was chaplain to gaols and hospitals, including mental hospitals. He parish was known as the "Pitiful Parish". Robert Logan selected Lot 28 of the Village Settlement in 1896 and lived there until his death in 1936. Historian John Lundy-Clarke tells how Logan planted his land with plums, peaches and apples and also grew raspberries, beans, cabbages and lettuces. He also planted a small patch of oats that he harvested to feed his horse. Grave of Victor Bonsak (died 11/04/1891) and Mary Bonsak (b1878 died 24/03/1938) in Plot# N3 Greensborough Cemetery. Johann George Bonzak arrived at Port Phillip on December 19th 1849, from Germany. Mary Bonzak, of German birth, applied for a Certificate of Naturalization in Eltham on 13th April 1905. She had 10 children (4 boys and 6 daughters) . Her sister (maybe) Sarah Jane Bonsak (1881-1978) married George Arthur Iredale in 1908. A Bonzak Family lived near the Partington Family of Willis Vale.Greensborough Cemetery was created when land was given for the cemetery by Mr William Poulter, a local settler, about 1864. Raleighs Road - Property of the Raleigh family descendants of Reiersen family from Norway. Henry and wife Catherine had a small wooden house near Djerriwarrh Creek. Their daughters Catherine married Robinson, and Henrietta married Isaac Robinson of “Creighton” Toolern Vale Road. Henry’s Brother Oliver married Margaret McLean. Their children were, Elsie, Rupert, Lois, Annie, Albert and Olga. She died in September 1986. She was a long term organist at the Presbyterian Church. A stirrup pump is a portable reciprocating water pump used to extinguish or control small fires. It is operated by hand. The operator places a foot on a stirrup-like bracket at the bottom of the pump to hold the pump steady. The bottom of the suction cylinder was placed inside a bucket of water. Water was drawn by pumping the handle up and down to create suction. The pumps were used in a variety of settings to enable quick action if a small fire broke out. They were a vital tool in London during the Blitz of World War 11. On the local level they were also used for spraying fruit trees, plants and vines. The Crescent Tool Company was founded in 1907. The Crescent brand has changed ownership multiple times. It is currently owned by Apex Tool Group but still also trades as Crescent in Australia. This pump was donated by Geoff Williams of Wodonga and was used at "Orange Vale" farm at Oxley Flats near Wangaratta. "Orange Vale" was owned by Mr. Robert Williams. Widely known as "Uncle Bob". in the 1940s Mr. Williams opened up the family property, established in the 1860s, as a camp for young people from Wangaratta. By 1951, this had extended to catering to group camps for children from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. 250 children could be accommodated at one time and as many as 3,000 children enjoyed the facilities each year.These pumps were important in fire fighting in a range of settings and were adapted for use in agricultural and small farm settings,A brass stirrup pump with wooden handle. It consists of 2 parallel brass pieces, one with a foot piece attached to keep the pump steady. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995.
