Phillip Island and District Historical Society Inc.Framed Life Saving Certificate, 11-07-1901
This was given to William James Kennon. He was attempting to take assistance to a wrecked barque at Cape Patterson on April 25th, 1901. The ship was the barque "Artisan".Framed, printed Certificate of Meter, in black lettering with hand written name and particulars of recipient. A gilded matt is surrounded by an ornate wood and gesso frame which is in poor condition. On the back the paper has disintegrated. The Certificate is paper, mounted on cloth, mounted on stretcher. Remains of framer's label, also Phillip Island label stuck on back. Certificate is from Royal Humane Society of Australasia.(Hand written in copperplate, in black ink) ......11th Day of July 1901:...... William James Kennon of Cowes, a blacksmith, aged 21 years, in attempting to take assistance to the crew of the wrecked barque "Artisan" at Cape Paterson, on the 23rd April 1901................? "Homefront" is the name of the group of chainsaw statues in Greensborough's War Memorial Park. Banyule Council initiated the project. The sculptures were designed by Amanda Gibson, carved by Hikaru Kodama and Leigh Conkie. This sculpture "Modern Warfare" shows two soldiers standing back to back. These soldiers are a symbol of strength and the ability to focus. And a reminder that Australian soldiers are currently deployed overseas. Women have been on the front line since 2016. She wears the uniform worn in East Timor. The male wears the uniform from Afghanistan. "Homefront" is the name of the group of chainsaw statues in Greensborough's War Memorial Park. Banyule Council initiated the project. The sculptures were designed by Amanda Gibson, carved by Hikaru Kodama and Leigh Conkie. This sculpture 'Justin the Tracker Dog" represents the 11 tracker dogs in the Vietnam War. The names of all dogs are on the base of the statue. All dogs were black Labradors rescued from Sydney pounds and named after Roman emperors. Justin was carved by Leigh Conkie. Stainless steel collar forged by Roland Dannenhauer. "Homefront" is the name of the group of chainsaw statues in Greensborough's War Memorial Park. Banyule Council initiated the project. The sculptures were designed by Amanda Gibson, carved by Hikaru Kodama and Leigh Conkie. In this sculpture "Vietnam", the soldier is based on veteran Bill Cantwell’s experience in the Vietnam War. The young soldier wears an eye patch – Bill’s legacy of his wartime injury. The base of the statue represents being held down – you can see the hands reaching up the soldier’s legs. Carved by Hikaru. The laser-cut steel shield has a pattern of Huey helicopters flying over rubber trees, Bill’s memory of being evacuated after being shot in the eye.
