Arthur Henry Miers played for cricket, football and baseball teams in Kew for a number of decades in the first half of the twentieth century. He was born on 22 November 1901, the son of Rodolph Theophilus Miers (1874-1951) and Margaret Frances (Margaretta) Fry (1875-1958). He had two brothers, Rodolph Cecil Miers (1904-80) and Charles Wilfred Miers (1906-88), and a sister Marjorie Elizabeth Miers (1911-84). Arthur Miers died in Kew on 25 January 1966, and after his body was cremated, his body was interred in the Mausoleum of Boroondara General (Kew) Cemetery.Group portrait of a cricket club team in Sydney, standing in front of or sitting on the steps of a monument. The individuals in the photograph are posed in three rows. It is posited by the donor that the probable photographer is Bob Galley.Back Row - ? The man on the horse was photographed close to the main entrance of The Avenue which was the main approach to the former Sunbury Asylum. In later years the conifer trees were replaced with oak trees and today The Avenue is still the main road leading into Jacksons Hill, the housing estate that has been built on the former Sunbury Asylum land.The housing development on the former Sunbury Asylum site began in the 1980s. John Inglis Lothian and family at 'Tantallon', c1925. John Inglis Lothian was born in Dunbar Scotland in 1851. He married Lillias Charlotte Smith (b 1847) in 1876. They had 6 children, all but the last born in Scotland before they migrated to Australia in 1888. Children were: 1. Margaret Morrison (1879 - ) 2. Thomas Carlyle (1880 - 1974) 3. Elizabeth Inglis (1882 - 1973) 4. Lillias Smith (1883 - 1971) 5. Isabella Margaret (1885 - 1946) 6. John George (1892 - 1983). Lillias Smith Lothian (Father's name: Morrison Smith; Mother's name Margaret Inglis) died in Ringwood and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (C-*-0138). Most of the other members of the family were cremated and their ashes scattered. The family were in York Street, Surrey Hills in 1903 but moved to Ringwood where they were orchardists, returning to 59 York Street by 1927, by which time John Inglis Lothian had retired. Thomas Carlyle Lothian lived at 33 York Street (St Abbs) and established Lothian Publishing Co Pty Ltd. He died on 19 Apr 1974 in Mont Albert. "Sgt. David McPhie and some of his family/at Suffolk Road Mounted Police Station./Stables are shown in background./Courtesy - Mrs. P. Scales (nee McPhie)." The police established a station at 5 Suffolk Road in 1889. The first policeman was Constable Patrick Healey soon after assisted by Sgt Wilson. Constable David McPhie (1887-1963) was married to Jessica Beatrice McErvale (1891-1962) in 1914. They had a son - Angus (1916-1971) and a daughter Jean Cameron (1918-1985); she was born in Surrey Hills. In 1919 electoral rolls David McPhie is listed as a policeman at 5 Suffolk Road. Police gazettes list him as discharged on 2/11/1923. The family continue to live at 5 Suffolk Road and thereafter he is listed as a labourer. Entry in 'Surrey Hills In Celebration of the Centennial 1883-1983' states there was a mounted troopers' station at 5 Suffolk Road from 1889-1914. It was later at 5 Essex Road and then in 1923 moved to 171 Union Road (later the doctor's surgery and residence) and then to 93 Union Road where it stayed until 1947. It is not known how the donor was related to David McPhie.Image of a man, identified as Sgt. On March 2, 1940, Sir Winston Dugan, Governor of Victoria unveiled the busts of the six first prime ministers of Australia at a ceremony on the long avenue of Horse Chestnuts. The donor, Richard Armstrong Couch, was born in Ballarat in 1868.The Prime Ministers Avenue is a feature of national significance, set in the magnificent Horse Chestnut Avenue of the Gardens. The 28 Prime Ministers of Australia are displayed as bronze portraits mounted on polished granite pedestals. The collection includes a portrait of one of the founding fathers of Federation, Alfred Deakin, who was the first Federal Member for Ballarat and the second Prime Minister.Kodachrome slide depicting a pathway and lawns where pedestals and busts of the first six prime ministers are lying on the ground to be installed.
