The Cheltenham parish was created in 1865 by excising a portion of the parish of St Andrews Brighton. A small brick church was completed in 1867 to serve a rural community stretching from Brighton South (Moorabbin) to Mordialloc. 1867 St Matthew's Church of England was erected in Cheltenham beside the Nepean Highway near Charman Road. A coolamon or pichi is an Indigenous Australian carrying vessel. It is a multi-purpose shallow vessel, or dish with curved sides, ranging in length from 30–70 cm, and similar in shape to a canoe. Coolamons or pichis were traditionally used by Aboriginal women to carry water, fruits, nuts, as well as to cradle babies. George Hathersich made wood moulding planes at 30 Shade Hill Street, Manchester, England, from 1797 to 1851. After his death, his wife, Elizabeth, carried on making planes. Moulding planes are used to create decorative edges on timber for doors, tables, cabinets and elaborate cabinetry.The maker, Hathersich, was a very early plane maker from Manchester, England. Hathersich's early 19th-century hand-operated planes are rare examples of crafted woodworking tools. This is a set of 14 photographs taken at the Warrant Officer and Sergeant’s Mess Summer Ball held at the Army Survey Regiment (ASR), Fortuna Villa circa 1990. Photos of personnel and their guests was taken during the dinner and social mingling outside the SGT’s Mess. The Ball and Dinner was held in the gardens of Fortuna Villa and in temporary 20’ x 30’ Army tents set up on the roadway in front of the transport compound. This camera was designed by William Johnston in 1904. Production began in 1905. There were many versions, the number indicated the length of film which corresponds to the width of the panorama. Originally designed for photography of large groups of people. Later it was used for landscapes. This camera was used by the local Lorne photographer William Anderson who took photographs of visitors and local scenes. William purchased Norman Brown’s photographic business in December 1899 and worked in Lorne until his death in 1948It is a large format rotating panoramic camera. A concertinaed fine leather tube with the adjustable lens is contained in a black wooden leatherette covered rectangular box. On the top is a metal winding handle, a series of weights and a carrying handle. The lens is a Gundlach - Manhattan rapid recto graph. This ribbon was won at the Orbost Annual Show Gymkhana in 1944 by Ron Cameron on a horse called Gene. The first meeting to form an Agricultural society in Orbost was convened by the then Orbost Progress Association and held in the Mechanics Hall on Saturday, 10th October 1891. Its first show was held on 3rd March 1904...on a site alongside the Bonang Road where the present Golf Club stands. It is currently held at the Recreation Reserve at Newmerella. When he retired to a farm in Kamarooka, the business was taken over by his son Robert Matchett (1864-1928). In 1904 the business moved to the Corner of Mitchell St., and Bath Lane. As well as a grocers this was a wine and spirit merchant. After Robert Snr. died the shop and the liquor licence was transferred to his son Robert Jnr. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically and socially significant to the development of Kew. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. This is the Ruston and Proctor engine and boiler from the PS Little Wonder built by R Barbour, Cornella NSW. It was launched in December 1878. Owned by Murray River Sawmills, it was used for logging operations until 1904, when the vessel was dismantled. The engine and boiler was purchased by the Robins family and ran a pump on their property by the Goulburn River. The boiler was later condemned by the engine continued to be used with steam supplied by another boiler up until the 1950s. Now considered to be beyond repair. Local government authorities exist to provide services and amenities to local communities, and are also responsible for regulating and providing services for land and property in their district.
