Temperance Hall was designed by Vahland and Getzschmann. The building next was also built by Vahland and Getzschmann as a residence for Robert Strickland, later it was acquired by Dr. Oliver Penfold who extended the building and set up his medical practice . Over the years the Pottery has contributed to the growth and development of the district through both its products including building products, table ware and decorative and commemorative war as well as artistically, being responsible for training and supporting many potters locally. The City of Greater Bendigo has had a long history of partnering with Bendigo Pottery and the Civic Collection holds a number of important items within its collection. This John C Watson (Chris Watson) 'reform' flask was one of a limited edition character bottles produced by the Pottery to commemorate important figures in Australian politics. He was the first Labour Prime Minister elected forming a minority government in April 1904, aged 37, after the ALP withdrew its support from Deakin. He was one of the first socialists to head a government in a parliamentary system, attracting international attention, and remains Australia's youngest prime minister. After less than four months in office, the Watson government lost a confidence motion and Watson was succeeded as prime minister by anti-socialist George Reid. The original reform flasks were English salt-glazed stoneware flasks produced in the early 19th century shaped into the form of figures connected with the Reform Bill of 1832. Much was made of puns like ‘the spirit of reform’ at the time. Artist John Frith has taken the reform flask form as inspiration for a series of political ceramics of some Australian Prime Ministers. The series included Edmund Barton, Alfred Deakin and Watson.Glazed ceramic flask in the shape John Watson. Anthony Truscott ( 1856-1913) was a Cornishman who came to Bendigo in 1880. He initially undertook mining interests before opening a grocery store in 1884. The house at 2 Havilah STreet, "Kilhallen", was probably named after his hometown in Cornwall.Real Estate advertisement for a home built by Anthony Truscott in 1900 called Kilhallen. There are three photos, one of the two story house, one of the ornate fireplace and a small add on building at the rear. Danish brothers, Moritz, Julius and Jacob Cohn arrived in Bendigo in 1853 and by 1856 started making cider and soft drinks, building a brewery 1880 to further extend their commercial enterprises and stock their hotels with their own brand of beer. Having sent Moritz's son, (also Julius) to Germany to learn to brew, the Cohn Brothers began to produce Excelsior Lager in 1882, which was traditionally served cold, the first time this had been done in Australia. Overtime the Cohn brothers expanded their operations adding cordials and in 1916 produced a non-alcoholic beer to satisfy the temperance activists. Originally named Tonic Ale but re-named 6 o’clock Lager after the temperance advocates succeeded in having pubs close at six o’clock. This drinks tray is just one example of branded bar items which would have been supplied to hotels who served Cohns beverage to further promote the company. Cohn Brothers built an empire of breweries, cordial factories, hotels and liquor stores and ice works. In 1925 they sold the hotels and breweries to Carlton & United but continued to make their other products until the 1970s when the company became part of the Coca Cola Amatil Group. Jacob Isaac Cohn was born in 1830 (died 1911) in Horsens Denmark and entered the Sandhurst Borough Council in 1863 where he served as a member for three years, returning again in 1887 to serve as Mayor of the City of Bendigo from 1888-1889. Jacob Cohn was a great supporter of the Mechanics Institute, the Hospital and the Benevolent Asylum. It is believed that through his connection with the Mechanics Institute he exhibited some loaned engravings from the Dresden Art Gallery which were then donated to the City of Bendigo, forming the nuclei of the Art Gallery's collection. Jacob Cohn held the position of President of the Art Gallery for 18 years.Clear glass bottle with iconic red and white Cohns label printed on front and back. Bottle has been rebranded and had an extra label stuck to one side for Z Cal Low Calorie Orange beverage. This Bendigo Advertiser article is titled 'Silver Collection - Gift to Gallery' and is written by Amy Huxtable.There are four photos of various gifts donated by Bendigo surgeon Mr. A. L. An article from the Bendigo Advertiser Amy Huxtable column titled 'Bendigo surgeon and wife make further gifts to Art Gallery.' Mr. and Mrs A. L. Newson donated many pieces of furniture and paintings to the Bendigo Art Gallery. This article includes a photo of a 19th Century mahogany wine cooler. It has zinc lined ice boxes on each side and magnum holders in the centre. A Bendigo Advertiser newspaper article titled 'The Bendigo Fuse Factory by Amy Huxtable.' In 1860 Mr. Charles Perry set up as Proprietor of stamper grating works and was later joined by his nephew Mr. W. Hunter. During this time Mr. Perry worked on a model machine for constructing safer fuses. In 1876 Mr. Charles Perry built a fuse factory in Wattle Street. He refined his machines making them larger and very suitable for building safer fuses. In 1888 the English firm of fuse manufacturers Bickford, Smith & Co., purchased the factory and the secret of the manufacture. In 1912 the Wattle Street building was purchased by Tony Patterson and Huon Matear and was known as the Economic Manufacturing Co. (Bendigo White Works) making underwear. This was followed by Crestknit Industries which ceased operation in 1977. A newspaper article titled 'A wheel turns full circle. Amy Huxtable looks at the recent rebirth of Bendigo's wine industry.' Wine making was one of the main industries in Bendigo in the 1800s. Mr. Jean T. Deravin of Chateau Dore Vineyard was a skilled vigneron. In 1893 phylloxera was found in some vineyards and all vineyards were needlessly pulled out. A new era in wine making was begun in the 1970s. Mr. Deravin's great grandson Ivan Grose now has grapes back at Chateau Dore. In February 1971 a new era in Bendigo wine making began with grapes grown in Bendigo by Mr. Ron Andrew of Maiden Gully were first released as wine by Chateau Tahbilk and Matchett's. There are two photos in this article - a selection of the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon released on the 13/02/76 and a photo of Mr. Ron Andrews holding his first vintage. Four Posts Inn. Glenorchy built about 1841 by John Gleeson on the Wimmera River at Glenorchy. Building no longer exists as burnt down in 1944. Located on the site now known as Glenorchy (Victoria). Glenorchy is approximately 20Km from the former Ashen's pastoral run occupied by Dugald McPherson. The Four post Inn was a "Staging Camp" for the police escort route during the transportation of gold by road from Mount Alexander gold fields (Bendigo) to Adelaide South Australia in 1852-53. The police escort is known to have called in at Ashens homestead to visit Dugald McPherson. The Four Post Inn was the scene on the occasion of and encounter between the police escort and bushrangers. At a later date The Four Post Inn was a staging camp for the horse drawn coach service between Stawell and Horsham.Small weatherboard building with no verandah and tree blocking the view.
