Glass, Souvenir
A wine glass. This glass was made for the 11th anniversary celebrations of the opening of the new Frankston Returned & Services League of Australia club building held in 1987. The glasses feature an image of the new club building and details of the history of the club in gold leaf applied to the external surface of the glass. The glass is made from clear glass and is gold lipped.The glass is inscribed with the following in gold leaf: "FRANKSTON R.S.L. 11th ANNIVERSARY 1987" beneath an image of the new club building and a brief précis of the major events in the club history. -

The topics included are the morse system, the semaphore system, use and care of apparatus, helio, telescope, flags, message form, station routine, training and classification. This small book has a buff coloured cover in card quality paper and contains 95 printed pages. Copy of framed photograph of World War 2 Australian Army serviceman Lieutenant Edgar Burton Chapman, service number VX43645, who served in the 2/10th Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers. The 2/10th FC was attached to the 8th Division. Chapman later transferred to the 2/12 FC which was in Singapore when the Japanese invaded. Chapman was captured and spent 3 1/2 years as a Prisoner of War in Changi Prison. Chapman was born in Dromana, Victoria, on 21st March, 1914 and lived in Frankston and attended Frankston High School. He trained as a Civil Engineer and commenced work with the British Phosphate Commission in Nauru. -

Small statuette depicting an Australian serviceman assisting a wounded comrade. The statuette depicts a scene from a famous moving film taken in New Guinea during World War 2 by Australian War Correspondent, Damien Peter Parer who was attached to the Australian Military Forces. The statuette is made from Pewter and is mounted on a stained wooden base. The following text statement is copied from the AWM website and describes the image in further detail: During the advance on Salamaua VX89711 Sergeant Gordon Raymond Charles Ayre MM, a 58/59th Battalion bandsman from Shepparton, Victoria, in pouring rain assists a wounded mate, VX132355 Private William Oswald Wallace Johnson, of the same unit, across Alan's (Allen's?) Creek to an advanced regimental aid post. Johnson had been wounded by a Japanese grenade on the 13th of July 1943 during an attack on the "coconuts" area. Sergeant Ayre was awarded the military medal for his performance during this action. This is one of the iconic images of the Second World War. Statuette, Simpson and His Donkey, Unknown
John Simpson Kirkpatrick enlisted in the Australian Army Medical Corps serving as a stretcher bearer at Gallipoli. With the help of a donkey he recovered wounded from the battlefield, often under fire. He was killed in action on 19 May 1915 and was awarded a Mention in Despatches for his act of bravery.Simpson and his donkey has become the most famous of the images arising from Australia's Gallipoli Campaign in the First World WarA small statuette depicting a World War 1 Australian serviceman assisting a wounded comrade who is riding on a donkey. This statuette is made from pewter and symbolises the brave deeds of Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick who, during the early days of the Gallipoli campaign, similarly assisted a number of wounded servicemen. This Army Medical Corps serviceman was a stretcher bearer and commonly known as "Simpson". Australian issued ordnance factory Air Raid Precaution (ARP) enamelled metal identification badge. The badge has a red background with a gold colour inscription. The rear of the badge has a pin for attaching the badge to the wearer's clothes.The badge has the following inscription on the front side: "ORDNANCE ARP FACTORY", the rear side has the number "8" and is impressed with the manufacturers name "Stokes & Sons Melbourne" -

Tablets, Atabrine, ca 1940s
Unusual World War ll souvenir consisting of a small bottle containing a number of "Atabrine" tablets which has been mounted on a wooden base. These were originally issued to RAAF Leading Aircraftman, Frederick Charles Carey, service number 116991. "Atabrine" was extensively used as a preventative measure to protect servicemen serving in tropical areas from Malarial infection. "Atabrine" is a proprietary name for "Mepacrine" which was one of the first substitutes for "Quinine" a naturally occurring Malaria preventative. Larger doses of "Quinine" and "Atabrine" is also used to treat the effects of Malaria. The wooden base of this item has a label with the following inscription: "W.W.II ATABRINE", "THE S-W PACIFIC SERVICEMAN'S ANTI-MALARIAL TREATMENT", "F. Small pocket book size New Testament with a buff yellow thick linen paper cover. This edition was published by the British and Foreign Bible Society, London in 1939, printed by Oxford University Press. Presented by the New South Wales Auxiliary of the Society in 1941 to the New South Wales members of the Second Australian Imperial Force volunteering for active service in defence of the British Empire. 384 pages.The book cover has "NEW TESTAMENT" printed on it with the seal of King George VI below. -

An embroidered cap band (known as a tally band) worn by sailors to identify the vessel on which they are serving. This black silk tally band is machine embroidered in gold thread with the following inscription : "Kreuzer Emden" . Kreuzer Emden was the third vessel to bear the name Emden. A light cruiser built for the German Reichsmarine in the early 1920s, Kreuzer Emden was commissioned into the German fleet in October 1925. The ship served during WW ll, was scuttled in 1945 and broken up for scrap in 1949.embroidered with the inscription : "Kreuzer Emden" -

Electrical signalling lamp and battery box used by defence forces for signalling messages when in the field. These signalling lamps were used to transmit messages by switching the lamps 'on' and 'off' to represent Morse Code characters. -

Small statuette of a World War 1 ALH (Australian Light Horse) Officer presumably made of pewter, mounted on a marble base. The base has a small replica version of the Australian 'rising sun' badge, the badge is similar to the 'kings crown' version worn during World War 1. -

Framed collection of items relating to the life membership of General Sir Dallas Brooks awarded by the Frankston Returned Sailors, Soldiers & Airmen's Club dated 18th April, 1964. The frame contains the following items: a Life Membership card, a 'gold' key to the Frankston club, a RSS&A members badge of the day and an engraved label with a description of the presentation items. Sir Dallas Brooks was Governor of Victoria from the 18th October 1949 to the 7th May 1963. He and his wife retired to Frankston to live, he died in Frankston on the 22nd of March 1966 (aged 69). -

A souvenir paper knife made from a piece of wood salvaged from HMS WARSPITE. This is fashioned form a piece of wood and is in the shape of a paper envelope opener, it has a small brass label attached to one surface. Presumably this was recovered from the HMS Warspite which was commissioned in 1913 and served until 1945.This item has a label attached, the label is inscribed "From the TEAK of H.M.S. There are three leather loops inside the container for storing the contents.
