Hester Clara Darby joined the staff of the School of Mines, Ballarat (SMB) as an assistant to senior Commercial Classes in April 1916. On 01 February 1921 she was appointed a lecturer. She taught the 'Touch' Method of typing, Commercial Correspondence and Office Routine. During the war years Hester Darby, still teaching at SMB, worked as the honorary stenographer to the Ballarat Area Office. She was working in this capacity when troops from USA were billeted in Ballarat. Belonged to Clarence (Clarrie) Edward Nicholls who was a communications person on the Sunderland Flying Boats. He was in the Battle of Britain. He was seconded to the RAF and flew out of Plymouth. He was shot down a number of times. He was in the peace keeping corps in Japan and then Korea, and then went into the full time Korea. At one time Clarrie and his two brothers were in New Guinea at the same time. They knew they were all there together but they could not find each other, and officials would not tell them where they were. He flew the last Sunderland back to Lake Boga. He wanted to buzz his parents in Wodonga so he knew he was on the way, but the authorities wouldn't let him. Clarrie Nicholls was a flag bearer for the Melbourne Olympics.Red hard covered book of 200 pages. A souvenir paper knife made from a piece of wood salvaged from HMS WARSPITE. This is fashioned form a piece of wood and is in the shape of a paper envelope opener, it has a small brass label attached to one surface. Presumably this was recovered from the HMS Warspite which was commissioned in 1913 and served until 1945.This item has a label attached, the label is inscribed "From the TEAK of H.M.S. A trench art souvenir of HMAS Australia. This brass ashtray is apparently made from part of a propellor. Large enamelled steel water canteen, dark blue in colour. This canteen is felt covered, is carried in a leather harness with a leather and canvas shoulder strap. This canteen has a cork stopper and a small cup made from tinned steel. This is a larger capacity canteen carried by nurses who required additional water for wounded and ill patients. A WW1 Mills type Hand Grenade converted into a desk inkwell. It has a hinged lid which when opened reveals a ceramic ink pot. This is an original casting for a Mills Grenade mounted on a black glazed ceramic base.
