Part of the 'Mann' collection in the Wodonga Historical Society, used for accounting in the J. Mann & Sons General Store in High Street, Wodonga in 1934-35. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006. Local significance due to its use in the J. Mann & Sons General Store in High St, Wodonga and association with the prominent Mann family. National significance as kalamazoos were manufactured by an Australian company and used in the 1930s for accounting purposes by local businesses.Visible card book or kalamazoo used by the accounts department of J. This card together with a log book was a vital record of service for any seaman serving on a Merchant vessel that had been commandeered for War transport work and needed to be validated to ensure eligibility to be taken on as qualified member of the crew. G.W. Duncan appears to have specialised in engine room and mechanical maintenance. He appears to have served aboard a number of vessels including merchant vessels commissioned into wartime service in WW2.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources. The tintype (or ferrotype or Melainotype) was produced on metallic sheet (not, actually, tin) instead of glass. The plate was coated with collodion and sensitized just before use. It was introduced by Adolphe Alexandre Martin in 1853. The most common size was about the same as the carte-de-visite, 5.5cm x 9.0cm, but both larger and smaller ferrotypes were made. The smallest were "Little Gem" tintypes, about the size of a postage-stamp, made simultaneously on a single plate in a camera with 12 or 16 lenses. They were often produced by travelling photographers, and were cheaper than Ambrotypes so made photography available to working classes, not just to the more well-to-do. The print would come out laterally reversed (as one sees oneself in a mirror). Being quite rugged, tintypes could be sent by post. Tintypes were eventually superseded by gelatin emulsion dry plates in the 1880s, though street photographers in various parts of the world continued with this process until the 1950s. The firm traded as both The American Gem Studio and The American Studio. Others franchises were opened in Melbourne, Ballarat and Sandhurst (Bendigo). The Sandhurst branch closed in 1882 and Adelaide in 1884. All Gove and Allen studios had ceased trading by 1885. The original Nurse family business began in 1841 in Maidstone Kent until 1861 where they were plane makers, moving to London in 1887 the company became C Nurse & Co. And continued until 1937 under that name at the (Invicta works). The majority of their plane making was done in London but there are Sheffield and Brighton marks on their tools as well. The company was not only wood plane makers but tool makers in general with the Charles Nurse & Co catalogue having 350 pages of tools for sale of varying types for different building trades and over 138 pages dedicated to woodworking tools. Records show that the company was at 182 Walworth Road London from 1887-1949. However, they had several retail outlets before this time and records indicate before 1887 Charles Nurse was at 32 Mill St Maidstone Kent, from 1844 -1860 but were in business before then. Also in Brighton at 135 Queens Road from 1865 -1871 and at 3 Mill Street Maidstone, again from 1872 - 1889 listed on records of the time as “plane and tool makers.”A vintage item made by a significant tool maker and retailer from the middle of the nineteenth century and into the first half of the twentieth century. These items were made commercially for firms and individuals that worked in wood and needed a tool that could produce an ornamental finish to timber. The tool was used before electric or mechanical routers or spindle moulders came into use. They were used by craftsmen to produce decorative mouldings by hand. These profiled planes came in various shapes and sizes. A significant tool that today is quite rare and sought after by collectors. This card is one that was given to those who were designated to hold the tassels of the pall at a funeral conducted by Beattie and Phillips of Warrnambool. A pall was a cloth used to cover a casket or coffin at a funeral. The pall often had four or more tassels on the edges and these people, usually men, would hold the tassels when the coffin was being carried into the church and out of the church. The pall was removed before burial. It was also in some services unfolded and folded in a ceremonial manner when it was placed on the coffin and when it was removed. Other men would have been designated as pallbearers to carry the coffin to and from the church. The firm of Beattie and Phillips was commenced in Warrnambool in the 1860s, by Christopher Beattie and Henry Phillips, initially in Koroit Street and after 1928 in Fairy Street. James Beattie, the son of Christopher, was the proprietor from 1896 to 1945 when James Leahy took over but traded for some years as Beattie and Phillips. The business was sold in 2000 and an undertaking business still operates from the same premises. The other two cards relate to part of the main mourning party who would have been allocated seats in the funeral vehicles These are very interesting cards as it is a great example of funeral practices 70 to 80 years ago. The practices may in many cases be the same today but cards such as these are no longer in use. It is also important as items connected with Beattie and Phillips, one of the two best-known undertaking businesses in Warrnambool’s history.This are three small buff-coloured lightweight cards given to those at funerals who were designated p[laces or parts in the service. It is a concentrated extract of Para Sarsaparilla, so combined with other substances of still greater alternative power as to afford an effective antidote for the diseases Sarsaparilla is reputed to cure. It is believed that such a remedy is wanted by those who suffer from Strumous complaints, and that one which will accomplish their cure must prove of immense service to this large class of our afflicted fellow-citizens. How completely this compound will do it has been proven by experiment on many of the worst cases to be found of the following complaints : — Scrofula and Scrofulous complaints, Eruptions and Eruptive Diseases, Ulcers, Pimples, Blotches, Tumora, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Syphillis and Syphillitic Affections, Mercurial Disease, Dropsy, Neuralgia or Tic Doloreux, Debility, Dyspepsia and Indigestion, Erysipelas, Rose, or St. Anthony's Fire, and, indeed, the whole class of complaints arising from impurity of the blood. Cleanse out the vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in pimples, eruptions, or sores ; cleanse it when you find it is obstructed and sluggish in the veins ; cleanse it whenever it is foul, and your feelings will tell you when. Even where no particular disorder is felt, people enjoy batter health, and live longer, for cleansing the blood. Keep the blood healthy, and all is well; but with this pabulum of life disordered, there can be no lasting health. Sooner or later something must go wrong, and the great machinery of life is dis ordered or overthrown. Sarsaparilla has, and deserves much, the reputation of accomplishing these ends. But the world has been egregiously deceived by preparations of it, partly because the drug alone has not all the virtue that is claimed for it, but more because many preparations, pretending to be concentrated extracts of it, contain but little of the virtue of Sarsaparilla, or anything else. _ During late years, the public have been misled by large bottles, pretending to give a quart of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. St Andrews Primary School was one of thirteen primary schools and one high school to participate in the banner project. A picture of the St Andrews Primary School banner was included in page 10 of The banner habits of the Eltham tribes : Eltham Shire "as we are" Community Banner Project report /​ by Jacky Talbot. The 'As We Are' Community Banner Project was the first major Community Arts project initiated and co-ordinated through the resources of the Shire of Eltham. It was originally conceived and inspired by a local textile artist, Tracey Naughton, who, together with the Community Services Manager of this local government council, made the idea a very concrete and flourishing reality. The project grew from the original fourteen or so intending participant groups to fifty-seven banners; expressions of those diverse groups' interests and identities. As a first major project it was rightly felt by Tracey Naughton, who became the Shire's first Community Arts Officer in March 1985, that it should be fully documented, so that an appraisal of the extensive growth of this community arts development process could be assessed. Given the time and money available to do this, Jacky Talbot, and her advisors, decided it was appropriate to select fifteen or twenty banners for detailed analysis. This was done by taping interviews with members of the chosen groups. The groups were chosen to cover all ages participating, from the toddlers in the Playhouse to our grand elder citizens in their Nursing Horne, and to cover a wide range of different types of groups - schools, scouts, churches, youth issue based, and the numerous women's groups of various combinations, localities and concerns. ·. Some groups who presented their banners for the culminating highlight of this project - the Exhibition, held at the Eltham Community Centre on October 9th, 1986, had no contact with the Shire or project co-ordinator, but heard about the project through the local news' networks or other participants. The extent of community participation was enormous. It involved hundreds and hundreds of people. It changed some people's lives, enlivened others. As a first step on a new road its success is notable. These two bottles have been used in the business of Melsom Hemmons a dentist who operated from the chemist shop of R.F. Kennedy & Co. in Timor Street, Warrnambool. Hemmons was a close friend of Richard Kennedy who established a large wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist business in Warrnambool in the 1880s. This business was regarded as the largest and best appointed pharmacy in Victoria for many years. The business continued until the 1920s trading as R..F. Kennedy & Co. These two bottles are of considerable interest as mementoes of two prominent Warrnambool identities of the past- Melsom Hemmons and Richard Kennedy..1 A brown glass bottle with a metal top and a white label with faded red writing pasted on. Bowie knife, presented to or ordered by Charles John Dennys. Charles John Dennys (1818-1898) arrived from England in 1842 and set up a wool-broking business in 1852 with his cousin Thomas Allen Lascelles and Edward Walton. This became Dennys, Lascelles Ltd and later Dennys, Lascelles, Austin and Co. after prominent grazier Sidney Austin joined the firm in 1881. Dennys was appointed Secretary of the District Council of Grant in 1843 and was elected to the South Barwon municipal council in 1857 ("The Bay, Barwon and Beyond", pp.12-13). The donor is the great grand daughter of Charles Dennys; she found the knife whilst cleaning out an aunt's house and has no knowledge of its provenance. Many bowie knives were exported to America from Sheffield, where a number of manufacturers began making them in the 1800s. Invitation to the unveiling of Edward O'Donnell fountain in the O'Donnell Gardens, St Kilda, at 3pm on 18 August 1935. The gardens and the fountain are named after Edward O'Donnell, a St Kilda Councillor and businessman who was elected to the St Kilda Council in 1888 and served continuously for 44 years. During that time he was mayor on six separate occasions, including the war years. Following his death in 1933, a fountain was commissioned to perpetuate his memory in the centre of the gardens that had, by then, already started to be known by his name. The fountain was unveiled in 1935. It was designed and built at a cost of £750 by Modern Art Co. Pty. Ltd. Of the art deco style, it is 4.5 metres high and 5 metres in diameter. A menu card for a dinner on 27 March 1940 when Legatee Stan Savige presented the Legacy Charter to the Remembrance Club to become Hobart Legacy. It was held at Hadley's Hotel in Hobart. Savige was serving in the Second World War and had to obtain special permission to travel to Hobart to fulfil this task. A letter of approval written by Sir Thomas Blamey is also in the archive. Legatee Savige presented the Legacy Charter which was then accepted by the President of the Remembrance Club. Printed in the late 1880s, the postcard features a photograph of Charles Sherwood Stratton (professionally known as General Tom Thumb) and his wife, Lavinia Warren Stratton. Accompanying this image are a pair of black calf boots. Charles Sherwood Stratton and Lavinia Warren Stratton were American performers who traveled with the Barnum & Bailey Circus, founded by Phineas Taylor (P. T.) Barnum. They each participated in various acts including singing, dancing, miming, and celebrity impersonations. Both Charles and Lavinia gained international fame for their successful careers and small physical stature. Charles and Lavinia performed in Australia in August 1870. The duo were joined by their touring party as part of the Barnum & Bailey Circus "Round the World" tour. They performed at three evening events and two matinees in Beechworth during this time. Charles, Lavinia, P. T. Barnum and the circus inspired the musical drama film, "The Greatest Showman" (2017).The postcard is historically significant due to Charles Sherwood Stratton's status as an internationally renowned performer.
