Journal, Michael Hiscock, Wilbraham Frederick Evelyn Liardet: Romantic visionary of the Beach 1839-1862, Feb 1995
The author, Michael Hiscock, is a descendant of Liardet (brother of Penny Blazey, gt gt gt grandaughter). He brought this copy of the Journal to the 1999 'Lee-ar-day' event and donated it to the Society.An account of the life of 'Wilbraham Frederick Evelyn Liardet: Romantic visionary of the Beach 1839-1862" by Michael Hiscock - article in LaTrobe Library Journal vol 13 no 54 pp 4-14. Also contains article on sculptor James Gilbert, and Liardet sketches. Centre fold-out has excellent reproduction of Pier Hotel in its heyday. Memorabilia - One pound Note, not known
The pound note was donated along with a one dollar note and several silver coins by Society member Joyce SutoPound was legal tender until 1966 when decimal currency replaced it with a gold coloured two dollar coinGreen minted stamp on white background of treated paper. The front of the note has a picture of Queen Elizabeth 2nd, the Australian Coat of Arms and 'One Pound' stamped on it. The back of the note has 4 circles, one with 'One pound', one with picture of Charles Sturt 1795 - 1869, one with Hamilton Hume 1797 - 1873 and one with James Cook Endeavour. Black and white photograph of three young children, Joy and Lyn Hermon and a friend, standing beside a timber and corrugated iron house with two brick chimneys, built in Menzies Creek. Joy and Lyn are the great grandchildren of James Hermon who built the house in 1874-1878. In 1885 the house became the Aura/Menzies Creek post office. Copy given to Sherbrooke Centenary Committee in 1989 by Hermon family. -

This is rear of Blacksmiths shop Tram Depot, Alf Coulter and Arthur Thompson with hammer. Now in the earlier years, the smithy Horse and early electric was against the Gregory St. frontage. I wielded the 12lb hammer to assist the then blacksmith, W. McGeachan? (red hair) 1905. The Kew Light Opera Company was formed in 1952, and mounted a number of musical and variety productions each year until it was subsumed in the "Q" Theatre Guild in 1957. A partial record of performances by the company includes: 1952 Florodora, 1953 The Cingalee - San Toy or The Emperor's Own, 1954 While the Sun Shines - A Country Girl - Our Miss Gibbs, 1955 The Toreador - The Arcadians, 1956 The Maid of the Mountains - Whiteoaks - Goodnight Vienna!, 1957 A Country Girl. Most of the Company's performances took place in the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, Kew. The scrapbook of annotated photographs, programmes, and newspaper reviews of which this item is a part was assembled by Marion Tilley, wardrobe mistress for, and performer in, productions by the Kew Light Opera Company and the "Q" Theatre Guild. It is significant as a remarkably complete document of theatre performances in Kew, Victoria during the 1950s and 1960s. The scrapbook, and the items individually catalogued within it, have artistic and aesthetic significance within the history of performing arts in Victoria in the middle of the 20th Century. They have social significance in that they reveal socio-cultural values and preoccupations during the period. The records also act as a history of arts activities in the Kew Recreation Hall and later in the Kew City Hall as entertainment and community arts and music precincts.Black and White photograph of performers in The Cingalee or Sunny Ceylon. The Cingalee is a musical play in two acts by James T. Tanner, with music by Lionel Monckton, lyrics by Adrian Ross and Percy Greenbank, and additional material by Paul Rubens. Murray Comrie Collection. A telegram sent from James Ray, Mayor of Tarnagulla to the Minister for Mines, Melbourne on 22nd February 1865. Reads: "On behalf of the people of Tarnagulla I have to ask that the permission granted to two miners to draw off water from the Public Reservoir be suspended until a petition now in course of signatures by the miners can be forwarded. One of Eltham's earliest settlers was James Orford. Born 1804 in Bedfordshire, the son of George, a carpenter and Lydia Barret, he and wife Sarah Amelia nee Moull (1807) arrived as Assisted Immigrants aboard the ship, ‘Orestes’, November 28, 1839 accompanied by their children, George (14), Mary Ann (11), and James (2). Originally settling in New South Wales, daughter Sarah Amelia was born at Braidwood in 1843 and son, Thomas Henry at Pambula in 1847. James was a carpenter who is known to have built the original gates to Eltham Cemetery. He died in 1869. Around 1890, his son Thomas Henry Orford was living in Pitt Street. Following the death of his wife Helen in 1899, Thomas was appointed by Joseph Panton to look after ‘Panton Park’, a 429-acre bushland property at the fork of Reynolds and Laughing Waters Roads, extending down to the Yarra River. His work entailed ringbarking the manna gums on the property to clear the land for pasture. Thomas lived in a slab hut with his son Ernie, who helped with the work. When Gordon Lyon purchased Panton Park in 1908, Thomas then worked for Lyon at both Panton Park and at ‘Banyule’, Lyon's stud farm at Heidelberg. In 1915 Lyon gave Thomas six acres of land in Reynolds Road with a two-roomed cottage. Thomas died in 1944 and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with his wife and his parents. Another of James Orford's sons was James Matthias Orford. He tried to grow food on land at the end of Laughing Waters Road, but without success. Reputedly the Wurundjeri taught him to swim. He was once imprisoned; when his friend Constable Lawlor invited him to inspect the new bluestone lock-up, Lawlor locked him in and wouldn't release him until he was promised two gallons of beer! He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex.This item is an example of book-keeping in Orbost in the early 20th century and is a useful research tool.A white paper account with black print, blue lines and an illustration of an old car in the top left corner. The card was sent by James Henry Wicks to his sister, unknown. After serving in the 7th Batt, J H Wicks transfered to the 5th Machine Gun Batt AIF in France. He returned home in 1919Greeting card.The outer card is a parchment type paper fawn in colour. The front cover has a yellow ribbon band rectangular in shape glued to the card. A rectangular card is glued over this. The card contains flowers, an image of a church or mosque in a half circle. Above this to the right is wording. The card opens to a centre piece which is paper, a light blue in colour.Front cover in centre card. Believing ye Rejoice, 1.Peter.1.8. On the card itself, Greetings from a Soldier boy in Eygpt 1916.
