This item is part of the Dodgson Collection, which was bequeathed to Queen's College in 1892 by the Rev. James Dodgson. The collection was created by Aquila Dodgson, brother of James. Aquila Dodgson was a friend of the English Egyptologist Flinders Petrie, and it was through this friendship the Aquila was able to acquire ancient Egyptian artefacts. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This tape recorder was manufactured in 1961 by German company Grundig, established in Nuremberg in 1945. Grundig had the reputation of making some of the highest quality audio equipment in the mid twentieth century. The Haeusler Collection tape recorder could be used to listen to and record music and other sound, and was fully portable. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. Photos of a trip to an Aircraft Museum, including Legatees George Woodward and George Standish. With about 12 Legatees and some wives it is assumed to be a day trip to the museum. On the shape of the building it looks like the National Vietnam Veterans Museum on Philip Island, or perhaps the Australian National Aviation Museum, in Moorabbin. Also present were L/ John Sullivan, L/ Joe Morton and his wife Mary Morton. The captions included: "Legatee Joe Morton, joined by his wife, Mary. Legatee Morton gave his RAAF overcoat and jacket to the Museum." "The Catalina fan club was out in force Legatees George Woodward and George Standish." Former Junior Legatee Brian Edwards set out in September 1993 to complete a flight around Australia in a tiger moth called 'Matilda' as a tribute to Legacy's 70th Anniversary. He was due to arrive at Essendon Airport on 4th October 1993 and a celebratory luncheon was held. The event was supported by Ansett Airlines and Optus Communications. The promotion in The Answer invited anyone to come to the luncheon (cost $25 a head), and greet Brian and 'Matilda'. Many school children also attended the landing. President John Stevenson and Legatee George Woodward were among those attending and are photographed greeting Brian. Brian had previously flown Matilda from the UK to Australia, covering over 12,00kms in 3 months. See also photos at 00980, 00982, 00983. Two Legacy widows from the Highett Legacy Widows Club. On the left is Mary Brooks the vice president and Jean Wolstencroft the secretary. Keesing Photographers took a series of photos on the same day of various ladies and some were committee members at different clubs. Presumably there had a been a meeting at Legacy House of members from the many clubs (including Hampton, Highett, Caufield). Joshua Black was an Irish Stonemason who came to Portland. The simple cottagy handpainted designs of Louse Powell's on Wedgewood creamware was popular in the 1920s. This is one of a set of four (possibly originally six) Louisa Powell decorated Wedgewood cups and saucers. Louise Powell was the grand-daughter of Emile Lessor.Wedgwood sought to offer a new product range which, after its success, lead to she and her husband receiving money towards a studio to work, two assistants in London and a studio in the Wedgwood factory. Their brief was to developed the art wares within the company. Their style was sought by Wedgwood to mass-produce works which coincided with the arts and crafts movement. A lot of Louise's work was individual as she preferred calligraphic and heraldic motifs. Sir George Victor Lansell (1883-1959), businessman, politician and philanthropist, was born on 3 October 1883 in London, elder son of George Lansell, the Bendigo 'Quartz King', and his second wife Harriet Edith, née Bassford. George was educated at St Andrew's College, Bendigo, and Melbourne Church of England Grammar School. On 20 January 1910 at All Saints Pro-Cathedral, Bendigo, he married a skiing champion, Edith Florence Gwendoline Frew; they had three daughters. As a young man Lansell excelled in revolver shooting, boxing and swimming but his militia interests endured longest. First commissioned in the 8th Australian Infantry Regiment in 1904, he was a captain in 1909. In May 1916 he was commissioned captain in Bendigo's 38th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. Entering the front line in France on 1 December he was wounded two days later and invalided back to Australia next March for discharge in August. After the war he rose in 1923 to major commanding the 38th Battalion, Australian Military Forces. Lieutenant-Colonel in 1927, he retired as honorary colonel in 1942 after having organized the north-west Victorian group of the Volunteer Defence Corps early in World War II. Lansell's major contribution was his service to returned soldiers. He was president of the Bendigo sub-branch of the Returned Sailors' and Soldiers' Imperial League of Australia for nearly thirty years. His work extended beyond grand gesture and he is remembered affectionately for his personal generosity to ex-servicemen and their dependants. Lansell was director of the powerful Sandhurst Trustees' Co., the Bendigo Mutual Permanent Land & Building Society and many other local companies. In 1926 he brought to Bendigo the overseas-based Hanro Knitting Mills (Hanro comes from the Swiss firm Handschin and Ronus which made high quality underwear and knitwear at Liestal, Switzerland) and the Australian Swiss Watch Co. Early in his business career he acquired the Bendigo Independent and amalgamated it with the Bendigo Advertiser in 1918. This whisky label comes from the bottler of the whisky, Tattersall’s Hotel, Warrnambool. This hotel, at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade, opened in 1866 and closed in 1996 and was a prominent hotel in Warrnambool during that time. Patrick King was the licensee from 1907 to 1909.This label is of some significance as one of the few labels we have connected to a Warrnambool hotel and one of the few mementoes of a prominent Warrnambool hotel, Tattersall’s. This is a small sheet of paper with gilt edging, lettering in white and black and some decoration which includes leaves and stalks of barley. One corner has been torn away.
