Black and white photograph of ESCo. tram No. 18. Date unknown, but post 1912, as windscreens for the drivers have been fitted and tram converted for one man operation. Does not appear to have track brakes. Has "Suttons Pianos & Players." advertisement on roof side. This ad was used as the basis for the roof ads on the Horse Tram. Yields information the streetscape at the bottom of Sturt St, near Grenville St, the ESCo shelter and how the trams used the track, though in this case, the same tram appears three times.Black and White copy photograph of a photograph of the Grenville tram terminus, in Sturt St, featuring the buildings on either side of Sturt St. Has the ESCo shelter at the bottom of the street, which dates from 1907 (Page 49 of "The Golden City and its tramways"). Note that a weighing machine appears to be on the north side of the shelter. The photograph features three trams, that appear to be the same tram, No. 5. It has a "Stop tram at Harry Davies" roof advertisement sign. Also features the "Sutton Pianos organs and music" sign. Yields information about the appearance through a drawing of Sturt St in the mid 1920's and yields information about the manufacture of china dishes with images in the bowl of the dish.White china dish, fluted sides, with a gold rim, flat base with a transferred image of Sturt St from Grenville St early 1920's with an ESCo tram arriving at the Grenville St terminus and two other trams in the view. Looks west along Sturt St. One of a series of dishes made for R. Tunbridge and Sons (see images of other dishes) by Shelley, England. i3 and i4 - of another dish held by the donor - Andrew Mitchell - shows the manufacturing details. - See Reg Item 7214 for another dish with the same image. Document - Report, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), "Bendigo Tramways Track", 1960's
Yields historical notes about the method of track construction in Bendigo, the poor condition of the rails at the time of the report and the need to do work at Charing Cross.Typed foolscap sheet note or report titled "Bendigo Tramways - Tracks". Gives notes on the track construction methods of ESCo and reconstruction by the SEC. In the section titled 'Present Condition of Tracks". Note says need to obtain photographs and comments as for Ballarat. Also mentions that the CRB is anxious to re-deck the bridge running under Charing Cross - written date? Probably written for a report into the tramways by the SEC as part of a recommendation to close them. Newspaper cutting from The Courier, Ballarat, Tuesday 20/9/1994 of the reproduction of a postcard photograph showing an ESCo tram soon after opening running west bound in Sturt St with the Town Hall in the background. Shows the development of the Gardens at the time and buildings on either side of Sturt St. and type of poles etc. The tram is fitted with a destination board on the front dash - the type used soon after opening in 1905. Caption of the photo says "Trams run up Sturt St and people relax in this postcard sent in December 1907. Ballarat's Town Hall is pictured at right." Photocopy of a transcript prepared by Lloyd Jenkins and draft copy with corrections in red ink of an interview with Mr. H. G. Gilbert at his home at 423 Skipton St. Ballarat, 23 March 1987. Mr. Gilbert was a SEC Linesman and was 80 years old at the time. The interview reviews Mr. Gilbert working life prior to starting with ESCo, joining the SEC, WW2, the Guncotton or munitions plant in Ballarat West, power supply, DC power supply, stories, the Social Club (EST). Black and white print of bogie tram No. 22 and another single trucker at the City terminus, Sturt St, with the Town Hall in the background. A large number of passengers board and leaving the trams. Has a bus in the distance crossing Sturt St.. Tram has the destination of Sturt St. West. In the photograph are Anderson Paper Merchants, Terminus Cafe and Penfolds Wine shop. In the bottom right hand corner is an ESCo/SEC cable termination/switch box. 3217.1 - original photo ex SEC? 3217.2 - different crop - added 21/3/2021 - has more of the original image on the right side. On rear of photograph is a white dot with "5" in red ink, and in pencil "Car 22, renumbered as 37 in 1951 in order to consolidate the bogies cars from No. 34 onwards. This was the first bogie car to run in Ballarat and ran from 1945. The SEC made this agreement with respect to the operation of tramways in Ballarat and Sebastopol in 1929, though the SEC did not formally take over operation until 1934. See item 7604 for a signed copy of the original agreement. Yields information about the appearance and the use of ESCo tram 12 in Victoria St and has a strong association with those photographed on the steps of the tram.Digital Copy of a photograph purchased by David Critchley from E-bay, of ESCo No. 12 in Victoria St Ballarat, c1925, possibly at the King St loop. Tram has the destination of Orphanage, a Viceroy Tea advertisement, a Coliseum roof advert and an "Pay as You Leave" sign. Note the positioning of the tram number on the route footsteps. The tram still has track brakes and the footstep boards are yet to be cut back or shortened. Tram has four men in suits standing on the running board with the driver or motorman in the doorway of the tram as well. Demonstrates a conductors communication bell made by or for the Melbourne Cable Tram Operator and then reportedly subsequently used on ESCo No. 12. Brass Conductor Communication Bell, consisting of frame, bell, striker, bell pull section, one nuts and two pins. Cast with the initials "MTO" - Melbourne Cable Tram operator, in one end of the frame. Bell donated, reportedly off ESCo 12. Short bell type. Bell cleaned of grime - 12/2009 See Other Notes. The lady who had this bell, rang the depot sometime in May June, to ask if we were interested in it, yes, said it came from No. 12 in Nerrina, family connection to the people. Gives details of fare structures, costs, tramway wages, section changes, American and English tramway fares and increase in the cost of coal. Set of seven Rose Series Heritage postcards in a strip production featuring Bendigo Victoria. Each black and white postcard features an historic view of Bendigo from older Rose Series or Valentine's postcards and are perforated on the top and bottom so they can be separately used. On the rear of each card are areas for address, stamps, title, Rose logo and copyright note. Each card has been given a new Rose Series Number. On the top of the set of cards is a short history profile on the Rose Stereograph Co. 1. The paper gives the history of power supply in Ballarat, including street lighting, ESCo, AC and DC power supplies, the takeover by the SEC, Ballarat A and B power stations, a copy of an advertisement for the SEC in Ballarat. Yields information about the condition of the ESCo tram fleet at the time of the SEC takeover of the operations their appearance, the reconstruction work and trackwork to rehabilitate the system. Demonstrates an important era of the Ballarat Tramways through the SEC preparing an album of photographs. The completeness of the record adds to the significance.Photo Album - comprising folded manila card covers, 11 photo sheets each with two, one with three black and white photos. Has three metal - steel fold back clips holding the sheets together. Folded so that the metal clips are not exposed on the outside. Has the title "Photographs of Ballarat Tramways Rolling Stock & Track Reconditioning Works". Album contains 23 photos, glued to the manila sheets - assembled by the SEC. All SEC photos except as noted below. Each of the photographs have been separately registered, as shown in the table below. Scanned images made of photos. Conservation Notes prepared - within the cataloguing sheet. Inside cover Typed notes, dated 1935, of the early trams of Ballarat, trailers ex Sydney, new trams ex Melbourne in 1930, and a further 5 in 1931. Lists the original Brill trams still in service (9 Number), and a noted on the recent scrapping of No. 11. The SEC made this agreement with respect to the operation of tramways in Ballarat and Sebastopol in 1929, though the SEC did not formally take over operation until 1934.Yields information about the 1929 agreement between the SEC, The City of Ballaarat and the Borough of Sebastopol about the operation of tramways in Ballarat.Original copy and photocopy of an SEC made 17/11/1929 of the "Agreement between the SEC, City of Ballaarat and Borough of Sebastopol" re tramways at the time of the operation transfer of the tramways from ESCo to the SEC. Five pages, foolscap, white paper stapled in top left hand corner. Outlines the conditions of operations, track maintenance, tramcars, responsibilities, buildings, bus services. On pages 13 and 14 has the names of the parties who signed the agreement, including John Monash. Agreement dated 17/11/1929.
