Slide depicts the huts and tents at the diggings in which business was conducted. This view you can see there are still quiet a number of trees in the surrounding area, there is also a fence. Weapon - 1855 Pattern Sappers and Miners Lancaster Sword Bayonet, Carl Reinhard KIRSCHBAUM, 1855 Pattern Sapper and Miners Lancaster Sword Bayonet, 1855
This bayonet and scabbard was made for the Charles Lancaster .577 calibre Oval Bore Carbine and was known as the Pattern 1855 'Sappers and Miners' bayonet because they were designed for use by the Corps of British Royal Sappers & Miners. The first model Sappers and Miners bayonet appeared in 1841 and differs significantly from this type. Pattern 1855 bayonets were issued to some volunteer units of the Victorian defence forces in the late 1850s, Stylised beaked-brass pommel with T- shaped attachment slot. A steel press stud operates the locking catch via a steel leaf spring on right side of hilt. Two-piece black chequered leather grips. Left grip has four small steel rivets, right grip three rivets and the leaf spring securing screw. Brass cross-guard with formed muzzle ring. Long single-edged, pipe backed, quill pointed 24 inch (615mm) steel blade. This teapot was donated to the Historical Society and placed in the Miner's Cottage display where it remained for several years. It was removed for cleaning and put in an archives display cabinet. The miner's cottage burnt down and thus the teapot is the only remaining object from the site.Teapot made of Britannia metal. Oval with recumbent dog on top. Insulated handle. Document - Miner's Right, Colony of Victoria, Miner's Right for the Ballarat Observatory Land in Magpie Street, 1890-1899
The Ballarat Observatory was established by James Oddie. It was later given to the Ballarat School of Mines, then the City of Ballarat.A number of Miners' Rights made out to James Oddie of Ballarat, for a block of land in Magpie Street, Mount Pleasant, used as the Ballarat Observatory. The red 1995 Miners' Right includes land at Dana Street with red writing over it regarding its transferal. The Observatory Registration in No 19578 with the situation of residence area being 'Magpie Street Mount Pleasant 209 feet x 52 feet" The District and Division is Central D Ballarat. The red Miners' Right includes the Magpie Ste Address and "Dana Street allot 3 Sec 52 40 feet and 140 feet in Ballarat Central D".
