These coins are examples of Australian decimal currency coins in 1970 and 1971. Decimal currency was introduced into Australia in 1966 with 50 cents, 20 cents, 10 cents, five cents, two cents and one cent coins issued at that time. The images of Australian animals and birds on one side of the coins were designed by Stuart Devlin. The one and two cent coins were discontinued in the 1980s and $1 and $2 coins were introduced in 1991.These coins are retained as examples of Australian decimal currency coins in the 1970s. Brunel's SS Great Britain is one of the most important historic ships in the world. When she was launched in 1843 she was called 'the greatest experiment since the Creation'. She made many voyages to Australia bringing many immigrants to a new life. A home sewing needle kit. These paper sleeved novelty needle books were available in the late 19th Century. They were often free as a promotional give-away. In the 1900's they were colourful and fun.A vintage Novelty Needle Book made in Japan with 50 needles mounted inside a pop up card. The needles are presented in gold and red strips attached to a coloured card depicting two small children playing on a see-saw with their teddy bear in a garden. Five needles are missing. The back of the card is yellow and shows a girl holding a red rose.'Novelty Needle Book 50 Needles' is printed on the front of the card which shows two children playing on a see-saw with their teddy bear. Model of HMAS Swan built by Shipwright Charles Axiak. Original ship construction in Melbourne and entered service 1970. Was a River Class Destroyer. Model maker worked in British Dockyards during WW2 and emigrated to Australia in 1955. He worked in Williamstown dockyards involved with construction of the Swan,1. Model of River Class Destroyer. green in colour from water line. Black line and brown at bottom. Small Australian flag at front and naval flag at back. 2. Wooden stand, tailor made to hold the model of the 'Swan'. Brown in colour with long flat board and separate pieces of wood embedded in the base to make the cradle. Sad-irons or "solid" irons were made by blacksmiths and used to smooth out material by pressing the hot iron over it. A piece of sheet -iron was placed over the kitchen fire and the irons placed on it could be heated whilst remaining clean of ash.. The women used 2 irons - one heating while the other was used. Thick cloth or gloves protected their hands from the hot irons. The handle was removed from the cool iron and re- attached to remove the hot iron from the fire. The cool iron was replaced on the fire or stove to heat again. Mrs Florence Potts invented in 1871 a detachable handle made from walnut wood with a metal latch to release the handle. These wooden handles prevented burned hands and were sold to grateful women all over the world. These irons were cleaned with steel wool to prevent them marking the material. If the iron was too hot the material would scorch. Most homes set aside one day for ironing and some large households had an ironing room with a special stove designed to heat irons. However, most women had to work with a heavy, hot iron close to the fireplace even in summer.Mrs Florence Potts invented this type of detachable walnut wood handle with a meta release latch for sad irons in 1871 and it sold widely throughout the world to grateful women including those in Moorabbin Shire.
