The Independant order of Rechabites "Hope of Australia Tent No. 109" was formed in Harcourt in July 1869 and celebrated its centenary in 1969. With a strong -minded core of Methodists and members of the Church of Christ the group provided moral leadership and social framework to a wide area for a long time. At first they met in a small hall but, the lodge having inflamed partisan passions, the hall was deliberately burnt down in 1877. Undeterred the Lodge rebuilt the hall in the same year and thus provided the only district public hall. The Hall was sold by the lodge in 1937.; The Independent order of Rechabites, a temperance and social organsiation, was particularly strong in the Harcourt, Barkers Creek district, due to the high proportion of Methodists in the population, a demographic phenomenon resulting from the courage, prevalence and influence of Wesleyan lay preachers on the Mount Alexander Goldfields. J Blight's quarry is located on Mt Alexander. It was opened up by Blight, a Cornish born quarryman turned gold-miner, in 1862. The quarries supplied Harcourt granite to monumental yards and building sites all over Australia. The photo depicts the average workforce of the Harcourt granite quarry as well as the methods of transportation of the heavy blocks of stone. Alex Reid was born in 1891 and began work on the Victorian Railways in 1907. He enlisted with the A.I.F in 1915. He served in Egypt and the Suez Canal but was discharged on medical grounds having contracted typhoid and dysentery. In 1917 he re-enlisted in the Anzac Light Horse. On his return to England, he survived the torpedoing of HMAT Ballarat and then served in France. On discharge from the army, Alex returned to the Victorian Railways and transferred to Wodonga. He was employed driving the “Spirit of Progress” and remained as “Driver in Charge” until his retirement in 1956. Alex was awarded the MBE in 1951 and the OBE in 1963 for his tireless efforts on behalf of Returned Servicemen and their families. He continued to work as a welfare officer for the RSL. As well as continued service to the RSL, Alex served as a member of the Wodonga High School advisory committee for 35 years and sat on the bench in the Wodonga Court for 15 years in his capacity as Justice of the Peace. Mary Munro was the mother of Isabella Munro. They travelled to Australia together aboard the Glen Huntley, although Mary travelled using her maiden name of McKenzie. They arrived in Port Phillip District in 1840. After an arduous crossing, they were required to go into quarantine at Point Ormond on arrival as the ship had several outbreaks of infectious diseases and arrived flying the yellow quarantine flag. She died in 1882 at 'Wattle Grove', Mordialloc. This photograph was taken during one of a series of workshops that were hosted by the Wooragee Landcare Group in the year 2004. In line with the main goals and missions of the Wooragee Landcare Group, these workshops aimed to promote biodiversity and land protection in the local area. Many of these workshops focused on either the protection of the endangered tiger quoll (spotted-tailed quoll) or the handling of fox infestations. Though the specific date of this photograph is unknown, it can be confirmed that it was taken outside of Wooragee Hall. Featured in the photograph, from left to right is: an unknown person, Jerry Alexander, Tony Prowse and Mary Prowse. The presence of wildlife ecologist Jerry Alexander suggests that this workshop focused on the tiger quoll, with possible exploration of its potential habitats (suggestive due to the outdoor location). The Tiger Quoll is the largest of the quoll species. Largely resembling a cross between a possum and a cat, the quoll is distinctive due to the white spots that are often found all over its brown fur.This photograph is significant as it provides evidence of a project undertaken by the Wooragee Landcare Group to educate members of the public on the tiger quoll in the early 2000s in an attempt to better understand and protect the species. This photograph was taken in April 2004, on the field day in Mount Pilot-Chiltern National Park as part of a workshop on quolls, led by Andrew Murray, then president of the South East Forests Spot-Tailed Quoll Working Group. IThis event was prompted by a desire to find out if quolls still lived in Mount Pilot-Chiltern National Park, as there had been no confirmed sightings since the 2003 bushfires. Andy Murray helped lead the efforts to find them. Currently, landcare group efforts have found evidence of a small but present spot-tailed quoll population in the park. Reasons for the decrease in population include fox populations in the area and destruction of habitat. It is the largest carnivorous mammal in Australia, and is native to Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and Tasmania. These three photographs were most likely taken from the 1950s to the 1970s. The RASvy surveyor in each photograph was taking angular measurements with the observer recording their readings on a booking form. They were probably employed in establishing mapping and geodetic control operations or the surveyors may have been in training. Photo .1P was possibly taken at Mount Alexander in Central Victoria, a location close to Bendigo, as the stone cairn in the background of the photo appears to be identical to the cairn presently located on top of the mountain.These three photographs are of surveyors in the field undertaking observations using theodolites. The Bendigo East Primary School was opened in 1915. In 1916 it was decided to plant an ANZAC Avenue of trees and this was completed on 16 June 1916. The plaques were placed after WW1. The school was closed in 1998 and the plaques were relocated to the nearby White Hills Secondary College in Napier Street on this board. In the early 2000's the Honour Board was donated to what is now called the Bendigo Military Museum. One hundred years after planting, later in 2016 the trees were removed in controversial circumstances. On the board 8 never returned, there is 1 x "DCM" winner, 1 x "MC" winner and 1 x "MM" winner. There are 3 x Wright Brothers of which 2 never returned. The plaque states that the soldiers attended the school which is obvious they could not have due to the opening date. The following Heritage report suggests that the names were of individual soldiers who lived in the area. EXTRACT FROM HERITAGE COUNCIL VICTORIA 2016 SUBMISSIONS HEARING “The Bendigo East School (‘the school’) was officially opened by Mr Frank Tate, Director of Education, on 7 April 1916. Approximately two months later, on 16 June 1916, Arbor Day was celebrated at the school with the planting of an ‘Anzac Avenue’ along a path from the front gate on Strickland Road (‘the pathway’) to commemorate the landing of soldiers at Gallipoli. The school’s ‘Anzac Avenue’ was one of an estimated 37 known to have been planted by school children throughout Victoria during mid-1916 as part of a program led by the Education Department, which included a recommendation to schools on 18 May 1916 that commemorative avenues be planted (‘the 1916 plantings recommendation’). At around this time, avenues of honour were also planted across Victoria to commemorate fallen WWI soldiers (‘the wider commemorative plantings phenomenon’). There were other commemorative plantings at the Place away from the pathway (‘the other commemorative plantings’). Anzac Day was celebrated at the Place in the years subsequent to 1916 and on 11 December 1920 the school’s ‘Anzac Avenue’ was officially opened. Embossed copper plates, mounted on wood, were fixed in front of the trees in memory of individual soldiers from the district who had seen active service in WWI. There is evidence that as many as 32 plaques may have been made and affixed (‘the name plaques’). Plaques were removed from their locations at some stage before 1964, mounted on a board and displayed in the school building. A mining firm was established by Hugh McColl in 1871. It was taken over by his son and later another son becoming McColl Bros. Prior to 1896 Ronald Alexander Rankin, who had worked as a clerk in the company from boyhood was made a partner and the firm became McColl and Rankin. In 1911, john J Stanistreet was also promoted to partner and the firm was called McColl, Rankin and Stanistreet. The partnership was dissolved in 1917 upon the retirement of McColl although the company continued under the same name. The company provided legal management of mines, insurance brokerage and legal services and eventually operated from their newly built premises, Commercial House, in Charing CrossBook: list of employees, address and number of dependents, presumed to be Red White & Blue Extended.
