The Municipality of Kew (1860-1863), the Borough of Kew (1863-1910), the Town of Kew (1910-1921) and the City of Kew (1921-1994) were local government instrumentalities in the State of Victoria. In 1994, the City of Kew was amalgamated, together with the former Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, into the new City of Boroondara (1994- ). Like other local government entities of the period, Kew was administered by town clerks. The two notable town clerks in Kew's history were H. H. (Henry Hirst) Harrison (1868-1955) and W. D. (William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966.This card is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. Items in the collection illuminate the political, social and cultural history of the district. As a continuous record, ranging across most decades of the Twentieth Century, they reveal changing tastes in design, values and relationships in the history of local government in Victoria.THE CHAIRMEN AND COMMISSIONERS / OF THE MELBOURNE AND METROPOLITAN BOARD OF WORKS / REQUEST THE / PLEASURE OF THE COMPANY OF / Mr W D Birrell / AT THE / OPENING OF THE UPPER YARRA RESERVOIR / BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR OF VICTORIA / GENERAL SIR DALLAS BROOKS KCB KCMG KCVO DSO KStJ / ON TUESDAY, 26TH NOVEMBER, 1957, AT 2 O'CLOCK P.M. / RSVP TO THE SECRETARY, 110 SPENCER STREET, MELBOURNE, C1, BEFORE 8TH NOVEMBER, 1957civic invitations -- kew (vic), melbourne & metropolitan board of works, upper yarra reservoir -

Book, Alan Judge Holt (deceased), Pre-Suburban Surrey Hills 1839-1883, 1989
Author: Alan Judge Holt amassed a significant collection of historical material related to the Surrey Hills area. Born in Moonee Ponds in 1912 to Edmund Holt and Ellen Ruby Sutton, he married Edna Jean Pallot in 1937. They lived at 62 Broughton Road, Surrey hills, had 3 sons and were strongly associated with the Surrey Hills Methodist Church. Alan was Secretary of the Victorian Lands Department and in his spare time recorded the occupancy of every property in Surrey Hills and Mont Albert at the beginning of each decade from 1890 to 1980. His collection of files and individual cards covers people, places, churches, clubs, businesses and other organisations in the area. Alan used this information to give talks and tours of the area and gifted his material to the local history collection through Jocelyn Hall.Unpublished manuscript / notes written by Alan Holt about settlers in and around Surrey Hills bound in-house. Letter - Text, Letter to The Trustees, Clubhouse, Recreation grounds for the Blind, 16/5/1957
Letter to the Trustees outlining the outcomes of a recent meeting, as the minute book was unable to be located. Below is a summary of the letter. The death of W.H. Paterson is mentioned and the recommendation to the Committee that the clubhouse by named in his honour was unanimously accepted, however requires the agreement of the Trustees. The remainder of the letter covers the past five years. The Victorian Association of Blind Cricketers are requesting the erection of a shelter shed and scoring boxes. Complaints have been received about horses using the park, which have been passed to Malvern Council who advise they have also received similar complaints from the general public. A fence is required but a lack of finance has delayed this action. The Clubhouse is being used for more activities including a dance class, indoor bowling club, pottery and craft work, therefore a new switchboard and rewiring were completed. In October 1955, the State Government offered funding through local councils, however despite a representation to the Minister, the Malvern Council were not willing to expend funds to the Association as they had committed to build an Elderly Citizens Club. A large signboard was repainted and a new signboard erected at the front entrance, along with a light controlled by a clock. The Clubhouse has also been used one night per month by the local branch of the RSL and occasional use by the Teachers College for inter College sports. There has been cooperation with the L.T.A.V. (Lawn Tennis Association of Victoria) during tennis championships, and although the Committee recognise the need to do more with the area, the impending homes been built at Ballarat and Bendigo have been a limited factor. Rosemary Myers spoke about Lizzie Daley in May 2012. She described the house as having lots of ornaments, and how she enjoyed going thereto buy ribbons and laces for a pair of baby booties she knitted for her school handwork at Melton P S 430. Margaret Nolan's memories of Lizzie: When we were young kids we would go down to visit our cousins, the Myers who lived on the Highway. My great grand mother Mary Luby lived in Reserve road when she came to Melton, she was married here in 1857. Her sister Ann nee Dowling was married to Henri Miers [Myers] in 1867. Her other sister Eliza married William Daley in 1862. He had a Bootmakers shop in the High street. Their daughter Lizzie later turned it into a haberdashery shop. We would go there to buy sewing threads and ribbons. Margaret nee Nolan Brooks memories recorded on the 20th September 2013 Book was from Lizzie Daley's shop in High Street, Meltonlocal identities -
