Hung in the public bar of the Rose and Crown Hotel in Bay Street soon after the 2nd World War until major renovations were carried out in aprrox 1986/7. It was then returned or donated to the Port Melbourne Sub-Branch of the RSL, but due to diminishing membership they soon donated it to the PMCC for safe keeping or display. Three gold covered auction catalogues with black printing for Australia's First (Believed to be World's First) Gold Nugget Auction held in the Memorial Hall, Pall Mall, Bendigo on the 24th May, 1980. Catalogues are made of card and are tri-fold. On the front is a black sketch of Bendigo Historic Post Office. The inside which is white are the Conditions of Sale, the centre has the List of Nuggets which includes Lot No., No. of Nuggets and Approx. Lot Wt. in Grains. Handwritten notes and carbon copy titled Question 5. Notes refer to Victoria Hill being opended up by Theodore Ballerstedt and his son early in 1854. Theodore Ballerstedt left for Germany having sold his home, crushing battery and mine to Mr Geo Lansell. He called the mine the '180'. Next mine north to the '180' was the Victoria Quartz. Two copies of document : ineteen handwritten pages of notes on 'The Rich Victoria Hill and Its Historical Association' Signed by A Richardson and dated 30 - 8 - 1971. and a typed copy of same. Notes include: Introduction, Hotels, Mines, Mining History and descriptions of features where the signposts are. Mines mentioned in the text are: North Old Chum. Ballerstedt's first open cut, Lansell's Big 180. 20 head stamper, Lansell's Cleopatra Needle, Victoria Quartz Mine. Cleopatra's Needle was a square sectioned brick chimney with this four sided pyramidal chimney top with four vents to allow the smoke to escape whatever the direction of the wind. It was demolished in the 1950's as it had a bend in it and it was considered unsafe.
