This tool is one of a collection of tools which are believed to have belonged to Henry Phillips. English-born carpenter, Henry Phillips (1821-1896) came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth in 1849. They lived for some time in Port Fairy before coming to Warrnambool where Henry formed a partnership with Christopher Beattie and established the undertaking firm of Beattie and Phillips in 1865. This firm continued on after the death of the two founders and lasted until the year 2000. In Warrnambool Henry Phillips was involved in the management of the Mechanics’ Institute. This tool is of interest, firstly as an example of a vintage tool and secondly as a memento of the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. This is a hand drill with a composite material handle at one end (for one hand) and a tubular metal piece at the other end for the insertion of a bit or drill. In the middle is a circular turning piece with metal spokes and a metal handle (for the other hand). Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. The business / advertising cards are for Lewis Zilles, founder of the printing company. All show the address for Mackenzie Street Ballarat. Two of the cards have a calendar for 1934. Prue Forster believes this to be the bottle given to her by 'Auntie' Maud Pepper, for Frank Forster's collection. Prue met her when she was working for the Aboriginal Health Service (1980-1993). 'Auntie' Maud Pepper was living in Preston at the time but had come from the Western District. The bottle was her own and she told Prue how fine material was used over the mouthpiece instead of a rubber teat. A newsletter printed at Somer’s Camp in 1978. It reflects some of the activities the campers experienced. There was news of sporting events and winners of contests. Also a crossword and some cartoons. The authors are not identified but could be some of the junior Legatees. Legacy has provided camps for Junior Legatees for many years. It started in the early years when Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place close to the beach. Founded by Moritz Michaelis and Isaac Hallerstein in 1866. Isaac Hallenstein had previously been partnered with Hermann Buttner and they were travelling salesmen in the Goldfields. Eventually they bought Cleghorn's tannery in Melbourne but Buttner sold his part to Moritz, Isaac's uncle. The expanded the leather business until they had branches in most states and New Zealand and London. After WW1 and the deaths of the founders, the company moved into a variety of leather goods, including shoes, footballs and golf bags. In the 1890s, American Ever-Ready Company founder Conrad Hubert invented the electric flash light which worked with his dry cell batteries . The first Ever Ready flash light was patented in 1898. The first portable flashlights were hand-made from crude paper and fibre tubes, with a bulb and a rough brass reflector. Because batteries were weak and bulbs primitive, flashlights of the era produced only a brief flash of light- thus the name. This torch is named a Bullseye because of the glass lens at the top.This torch helps to interpret the development of lighting. The collection of whale oil lamps as well as gas and electric lighting. Silver coloured metal torch. It has a body and a lid/top. The body is hip flask shaped. On the side of the body is a silver coloured metal button which can be slid up and down. On both the front and back of the body and the top centre are tow small raised circles. The top, which can be removed has a glass dome on it. The inside of the body has a small piece of contact metal where the slide button on the outside turn the torch on and off. In the centre at the top there is the light bulb. The base of the body can also be removed. An article titled 'Legacy Founder Honored', that mentions the speech by Legatee Brian Armstrong delivered as the Savige Memorial Oration at the Federal Conference of Legacy Clubs in Canberra on 22 October 1954. The speech is a full account of Savige's life, his war service and his role in Legacy. Legatee Armstrong was a good friend of Savige. The moving address described General Savige's life and service career, and how he formed Legacy in 1923 at the suggestion of his former Commander, Major General Sir John Gellibrand, He said at the time of his death the late General had been a member of Legacy for 30 years, and had been chosen to represent Legacy at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth. Following the Second World War he held many important posts, one of the most notable being Co-ordinator of Demobilisation. Legatee Armstrong told the conference that if a memorial to the founder of Legacy was required, they only had to look around themselves. Referring to the legal history and transfer of land for the Junior Legacy Club Balnarring camp from Legatee Savige. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also ran a camp in the area and the area became known as Somers. These documents record the transfer of the land to Legacy. Legatee Savige died in 1954, a few months after his wife, and they are buried together. The slides show a group of legatees marching to the grave and placing two wreaths on it after a service. The founder was WL Hawkins (1861-1969), who served in the First AIF in 1915 and saw active service in France. He attained the rank of Lieutenant. Briggs Marine was also a bell-founder specialist and is also associated with the Schomberg Bell at Flagstaff Hill, having restored it to is former state as a fine example of the bell from a luxury migrant vessel from the mid-19th century. The wooden pattern is part of a set that are stored in a strong wooden crate. It was used at Briggs’ Brass Foundry for making sand casts. The traditional craft of sand casting is over 2000 years old. The handcrafted process produces brass and copper alloy goods that are well suited to marine use; bells, boat hooks, cowls, propellers, handles, lids, rowlocks, hooks, letters, bolts, rail holders, brackets, deck plates, flanges, rudder guides, portholes and covers. Briggs’ Bronze mixture is a copper-based alloy made from local ingots of copper, tin, zinc and lead in carefully measured quantities. The finished product is non-ferrous and can last indefinitely. The crate of patterns was donated by the Briggs family in the early years of Flagstaff Hill, along with other related items such as brassware, tools and machinery. The donated items were displayed in a simulated Brass Foundry in the Village along with other working crafts, trades and services found in a Maritime town. The items were on show from the completion of the building in 1986 until 1994 when the building was repurposed. The patterns represent the trades of foundering and metalwork, both supporting maritime industries such as shipwrights and boatbuilders. Farmers, manufacturers and other local industries also needed the castings made by foundries. The Brass Foundry included a historic Cornish chimney set up as a working model, to tell the story of smelted metal heated in furnaces then be poured into the sand moulds. A solid half-cylinder shape was added under the horizontal 'seat' with another smaller half-cylinder attached to it, end-to-end. A string is tied between two metal loops attached to the back. There are two X marks stamped into the back. Below the placket the logo of the Celebrated Emu Creek Bush Band and the caricature of an Emu's head, are portrayed in a shield shape. Memorial plate 4.2cm ornate frame with a pale yellow matt and a narrow gold matt inside. Under the plate is a printed memorial with the same narrow gold matt. The printing is: In Memory of Elsie May Twitt Charter President of The Inner Wheel Club of Bendigo South Founder of the Flame of Friendship. The plate is a 30.2 cm square plate with gold decorative edges. It is about 2 cm high. The plate is painted with five chrysanthemum type flowers on a multi pale blue, yellow, green blue and pink background. Behind and above the flowers is a blue lit candle with 'Flame of' on one side of the flame and 'Friendship' on the other. The plate was painted by H. MacLeod.
