The 41 alphabetic and numeric visual signalling flags (including substitute and answering pennants) have either square or pointed ends. They are made of bunting, a coarse fabric of worsted (open yarn wool) in various colour combinations. Some of the flags are marked with inscriptions, for example “B”. Attachments to the flags include hemp rope and metal clips. Each flag has its own galvanised canister and lid, each of which is painted grey and marked with a letter, number or word. The flags were used for communicating messages to passing ships. Knowledge of visual signalling was mandatory for all lightkeepers and all lightstations maintained a set of flags. Although used for centuries, visual flag signalling formally developed in the nineteenth century and was published internationally as a system in 1857. By the early twentieth century it had developed into an effective means of conveying all kinds of short range visual messages. The signal flags and canisters at Gabo Island form a complete set and are not historically linked to the lightstation and their provenance is unknown. It is known however that they originate from a lightstation in Victoria and for some years were on loan from AMSA to the Queenscliff Maritime Museum, where they were held in storage and not displayed. In three of the six lightstations that Parks Victoria manages have sets of signal flags in their collections. Forty-one galvanised canisters with separate lids. The canisters are painted a grey/white colour and have either numbers, letters or words painted on the lid and on the cannister in black paint. There are variations in the style of canister and in the style of the inscriptions.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria 1921 to 1993 was responsible for electricity generation in Victoria and the operation of three Provincial Tramways. This particular brand of tobacco (State Express 555) was first made in 1915, and was most popular in Asia and China. The number triple 5 was mooted as a sacred number, and may have contributed to its high level of demand by Asian smokers. This would have been a favourite "smoke" for the Chinese emigrants, and especially those who settled in rural areas of Australia. In the era where 'male' type of activities such as motor racing, were sponsored by tobacco companies, roll your own cigarettes was ingrained as a macho male requirement. It was only in the early 2000s, when cigarette advertising had greater restrictions attached to the product, that the roll your own, and cigarettes in general, became less "cool". This particular cigarette tin would have also been useful for roll your own (ready rub tobacco)The significance of this particular Qantas cigarette tin to this rural region is that it demonstrates that overseas travel by plane was not only for the affluent city dweller but also available, and not impossible to the inhabitants of the Kiewa Valley. This cigarette tin also may hint that the influx of Asian immigrants into this region where able to visit relatives back in Asia without too much effort. The use of a Qantas cigarette tin in the Kiewa Valley also suggests a degree of affluent there or tourists from elsewhere. This tobacco tin relays a long ago era, when personal contact, and not something that has been written down by some "unknown", was valued as the true appraisal of a member of the community. This was especially relevant in a small regional area such as the Kiewa Valley. Although social networking was not as fast then as the internet provides now, appearances, manners, fashion and etiquette with first impressions high on the order of evaluating someone in the community. Pointer such as the brand of tobacco smoked was part of the rural assessment method. Up until the demise of the Australian Tobacco Industry, circa 2004, the Kiewa Valley and surrounding district was part of a vibrant producer of tobacco leaves. The remnants of this industry still remain today but the drying sheds (for tobacco leaves) are now used to store hay for the valley's dairy and beef cattle industries.This tobacco/cigarette tin is constructed from tin plated thin rolled steel. The lid is attached by two pressed and formed (from the main frame) hinges using the nip and tuck construction method.The outside lid and frame has a yellow colour anodised to the metal.On the front of the lid are the following printed: "STATE EXPRESS" ,in yellow print, and below this are two horizontal lines in brown and central to these are the numbers "555" . Below this appears and within a 'royal' crest, in yellow writing on a brown circular background "STATE EXPRESS". Below this, in brown print, "PICCADILLY, LONDON". On each side of the tin are printed in brown colour: front side" ARDATH TOBACCO CO. LTD. PICCADILLY, LONDON" . On the left and right sides are printed in brown colour "20 STATE EXPRESS 555". On the rear side is with smaller print "MANUFACTURED UNDER ARRANGEMENTS WITH THE POPRIETORS". On the inside of the lid printed in red colour, are the following words, the royal crest and sketch of the winged kangaroo(symbol of the QANTAS logo). Within a red elongated square border, are the Royal Crest and in very small red print "BY APPOINTMENT TO HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN" underneath in slightly larger print "STATE EXPRESS" The print underneath this and in smaller print is "CIGARETTE MANUFACTURERS ARDARTH TOBACCO CO. LTD." Next to the royal crest and in much larger print is "STATE EXPRESS" and underneath this ,the numerals 555 with the words "CIGARETTES" below. The lower half of the inside lid has the following words and the "flying" kangaroo(winged). These words in written (running free hand) style "Specially packed for QANTAS(in red print). Underneath and in smaller print is "AUSTRALIA'S OVERSEAS AIRLINE". This box which once contained linen thread manufactured in Scotland and labelled "British" manufacture" was used for the repair/manufacture of clothing by professional seamstresses and those wives required to "do" repair stitching of family clothes. This box was manufactured in a period when the title "United Kingdom" was used (late 1700's early 1900's) to describe the union of Britain and Scotland. The label however can be misleading as the"British Manufacture" thread was manufactured in Scotland. The broad term "British Manufacture" was used for the benefit of those in the "colonies" of Australia and New Zealand, during a period when the "coined" phrase "best of British, or British best" was synonymous to "top quality". After World War II the need for "cheaper products" was more persuasive than the quality of the product. In rural areas this shift to cheaper "non British" goods was at a slower rate than in the cities. Goods such as clothing manufactured or altered by seamstresses were regarded as of a higher standard and therefor the use of linen thread from "Britain" was a sign of quality and reliability.This box which contained linen thread, "British" made, is very significant to the Kiewa Valley because it demonstrates the conditions under which households in the late 1800's and early 1900's evolved from a "domestic repair /replacement" of damaged clothing to a consumer of recycled and shop bought clothing and linen. The ability of semi isolated rural based families to purchase "off the rack" clothing was severely affected by weather, long distance over dirt roads(poorly serviced) to large towns(shops), horse/cart or slower driven cars. The purchasing of clothing was, on the whole, from trading house "mail order" consignment orders.This red paper covered box has a white covered lid (top) with black print detailing the manufacturer and contents. This box contained 150 yds of linen thread 2 cord. A small added note pasted on one side "USUAL TWIST (s)" describing the thread's appearance. Enid Beatrice Gilchrist (1917-2007) was a fashion designer best know for her development of self-drafting dressmaking patterns. Her patterns were first printed in "The Argus" in Melbourne in 1946 and were soon collected into books for the home sewer.A small cardboard box containing various two books and various baby wear transfers. A butter churn is a device used to convert cream into butter. This is done through a mechanical process, frequently via a pole inserted through the lid of the churn, or via a crank used to turn a rotating device inside the churn. The use of butter is mentioned in biblical works and the earliest butter churn vessels belonging to Beersheba culture in Israel were found in Bir Abu Matar going back to Chalcolithic period between 6500–5500 BC. The butter churn in Europe may have existed as early as the 6th century AD, In the European tradition, the butter churn was primarily a device used by women, and the churning of butter was an essential responsibility along with other household chores. In earlier traditions of butter making, nomadic cultures placed milk in skin bags and produced butter either by shaking the bag manually, or possibly by attaching the bag to a pack animal, and producing butter simply through the movement of the animal. This case belonged to Leonard Thomas (VX21070) who was born on 23 Aug 1900 in Cardiff England. By the Second World War, Thomas had emigrated to Australia and was residing in Elwood when he enlisted in Caulfield in 1940. Thomas served during the war as a Private and was discharged on 31 May 1949 from the AIF Mov and Control Group. His full service records are not currently available via the National Archives Australia and so it is unclear whether this case was part of the equipment of his role or a personal item.This case contains a number of inscriptions which may aid researchers to understand the life and movements of the owner, Leonard Thomas. The apparent crest is of special interest, suggesting that Leonard Thomas was connected to equine activities though the unavailability of his service records mean this fact is not confirmed. The item has interpretive potential, to discuss matters of equipment, emigration, use of horses during war and possibly leisure activities if the crest is taken as a reference to polo.Horse shoe shaped case in brown leather constructed of a lid and base. Used for storing shirt collars. Lid and base respectively constructed of two pieces of leather (one top and one edge) which are stitched to heavy card interior lining, mustard yellow in colour. The lid and base are held together by a sewn on leather strip and fastened at the top with a metal buckle; the holed strap through which the buckle attaches has broken. This strap in turn passes vertically down the back of the case and underneath (forming the strip which joins the two halves). Exterior base carries handwritten inscriptions, as does the interior lid. Black ink stamps throughout.Stamps read "L THOMAS" along an upturned horse shoe, underneath which are possibly clubs and an up-facing arrow. Service number written on side of case reads "VX21070". Handwritten inscription reads "Leonard Thomas/33 [illegible three words]/Cardiff/April 20th 1921." Suitcase brought by Dutch immigrant.The fact that the owner reinforced and mended the suitcase suggests the Dutch trait of taking care of things and making them last. The stencilled initials suggest this case was probably stored in the hold.Brown painted suitcase of reinforced oilcloth with metal handle and two metal locks. A small door lock has been added to the lid which has been reinforced on the inside by a timber slat. A plywood slat has been added to the handle side of the case. The rims of lid and case are made of metal, as are the corners. The papered interior of both case and lid shows a small floral pattern in black and beige although, as part of the reinforcement, a coat of brown paint has been added to the inside of the lid and case, but not the bottom. Of the two straps designed to hold down the contents one is still in place, but the other has been replaced by a length of elastic. The original strap is made of cotton, now a dirty white with blue edging, and does up with a small metal buckle. The interior of the case shows a lot of wear and tear with evidence of multiple repairs. A small black metal chain holds up the lid, the corresponding one on the opposite side is missing. On the inside: the timber slat carries the name A.T.A. RIJKEN in black ink and also on a black Dymo label. On the outside: the handle side displays the initials A.T.A.R. and the figure 3 in white stencil. The lid bears evidence of a label in the bottom left hand corner. The lock, added by the owner, is 3cm in diameter and branded ELZETT Made in Hungary.luggage

Probably of US origin Can , Meat (Mess Kit), M-1910, M-1918 The older style mess kits had the flat lid that could also be used as a plate. The M-1932 (not unit in our collection) unit had the plate divided into two sections so food could be separated. The folding handle, when closed, fits into the groove formed by the divider. The ring on the plate was moved to the end of the groove so the lip of the handle fits right into it. The M-1932 Meat Can was made of "corrosion resistant" galvanized steel, not aluminium. It used the same WW I style narrow profile steel handle attached by a cast hinge.Oval aluminium mess kit with steel handle which acts as a lid lock when folded. Metal box with hinged lid containing Morse code equipment – batteries, bell, transmission key. Remains of webbing carry straps on back (see photo). This item has been modified from the original design. The item has a battery box located behind the Morse key but the original battery has been replaced by two rectangular 1.5 V batteries which were placed in the shelf below the Morse key. That shelf was initially intended to store the audio telephone hand piece which is no longer with the device.
