This is a set of five photographs of Multiplex mechanical stereoplotting equipment at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna Bendigo. c1950s. Multiplex equipment was imported from the UK in 1951 and introduced in the following year, to accelerate map production output covering CMF training areas at 1:25,000 map scale. Multiplex plotting was a productive advancement replacing the ‘Arundel’ method of graphical plotting planimetric detail that was expensive and slow, especially in timbered mountainous terrain. Air photos were made into small diapositives and mounted on racks in the exact position relative to when the aerial photos were taken. The technicians operated the Multiplex in a darkened room, with one photo projected with a green filter and the other through a red filter to form a 3D view of the overlapping photos. The 3D model projected onto a platen, which was a small platform that was raised up and down. The technician viewed the 3D image with special glasses fitted with red and green lenses. In the centre of the platen was a small pinhole that served as a floating mark, with a vertical pencil located exactly below the pinhole. This tracing table was moved to follow the topographic feature or contour line and draw it on the paper underneath. The technician raising or lowering the platform’s floating mark to match the height of the 3D terrain. It also replaced the slotted template method of mechanical adjustment of strips of aerial photography, however was restricted to each strip rather than between strips in the block. Although the Multiplex was phased out of production in 1968, it was used in the training of photogrammetry and aero-triangulation at the School of Military Survey located at Bonegilla, Victoria until the early 1990s. Although Photo .1P is not annotated the remainder have the name of the technicians written on the back. The equipment operated by the technicians is the KLIMCH Commodore camera. The main tasks undertaken by the technicians were most likely enlargements and reductions of map reproduction material. The KLIMSCH Commodore camera was introduced in 1953 and was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. It was replaced with a new model of the same size in 1979. The new model with its computer-based interface provided productivity gains with improved speed and its consistent results led to less wastage in time and materials. Its variomat lens system provided improved retention of map feature linear weights during the camera reduction process. The typed description pasted on the back of photo .5P states “Cpl R. MacKenzie of Bentley, Perth (WA) of the AHQ Survey Regt, located at “Fortuna”, Bendigo, (Vic). Has been in the Army for 5 years. He removes the lens cap from the 70 inch F16 lens of the giant KLIMSCH camera used in map making for the Army. The camera which was specially made for the Army in Germany is fully automatic and power operated. It is claimed to be one of the biggest automatic cameras of its type in the world. It was made to the specifications of the Aust Army Survey Corps to assist in the production of the very high standard maps for the Army. The AHQ Survey Regt also assists Commonwealth and other Govt departments in the printing of maps required other than for Army needs. This collection of four photos was most likely taken at Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo in 1988. Orthophoto mapping provided the Survey Corps with the capability to produce map products quickly in the event of a crisis. These are four photographs of equipment used by the Army Survey Regiment to produce orthophotomaps. The OR1 orthophoto projector and workstation was introduced in the mid-1980s. It was the second-generation equipment used to orthorectify colour and monochrome film aerial photography, replacing the system introduced in 1973. Orthorectification is the process of removing geometric distortions and scale errors/variations from images. Images have tilt and relief distortions that make it difficult to compare accurately a map and an image of the same geographic area. Once an image is orthorectified, features on the image are shown in their planimetric locations. 'Swag' nickname of Horace Samuel LONG who enlisted in the 9th Light Horse Regt No 437 on 17.9.1914 age 19 years. He transferred to the 4th L.H.Regt on 27.9.1916 and allotted No 437A. There is an Alexis Harold Safstrom No 1723, 38th Batt 1st reinforcements then 59th Batt. He was WIA twice and discharged on 31.8.1919. There are two Woodheads with an initial L. This is possibly L.H.B Woodhead No 728, 8th Batt then late in the war 25th Batt. He was WIA twice coming home late 1918. The colour patch on the uniform is possibly 8th Batt. Safstrom was from Heathcote which fits in with the donor of the items Mrs May Burns. Woodhead was from Mildura. The only connection could be that they were both in England at the same time the card was written. Albert Jacka No 465 enlisted in D Coy 14th batt AIF on 18.9.14. Embarked for Eygpt 22.12.14. He rose through the ranks from Pte to Captain by 15.3.17. He was WIA 3 times and hospitalised twice with illness. Awarded the Victoria Cross at Courtney's Post 19/20th May 1915. The Military Cross at Pozieres on 7.8.16 and a Bar to the Military Cross on 10.4.17 near Queant. He was discharged from the AIF on 10.1.20. This is a very brief history of "Jacka". Given that the photo is 1936 the first two are possibly, F/O Joshua Roger McDONALD No 86, enlisted 15.1.35. At his death on 10.12.1941 he was Wing Commander No 13 Sqd RAAF Darwin. Flying Hudson No A16-69 himself and 3 crew members were killed when the plane crashed into the sea near Ambon Island, Indonesia. Fl/Lt Robert Frederick DALTON No 37, no details of enlistment date. When he was discharged from the RAAF on 16.12.1947 he was Wing Commander at RSTN Laverton (TD & RS) F/O Frederick Attwood WITTSCHEIBE No 89 enlisted on 15.1.1935. At discharge from the RAAF on 21.5.1946 he was Wing Commander at Station HQ East Sale. There is only one WITTSCHEIBE listed on the nominal role.
