Poster - Kangaroo Hoppet 1997
The Kangaroo Hoppet is Australia’s premier long distance cross country ski race, and a member of the Worldloppet series of international cross country ski events. The first race at Falls Creek was held in 1979 under the name of “Australian Birkebeiner”. It was a 21km race with about 80 participants organised by the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club of Mount Beauty. The course started and finished at Falls Creek Alpine Resort and took participants out into the Bogong High Plains. After running the event for 10 years, it was decided they should become part of the Worldloppet series of marathon ski races. Representatives from the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club and the Australian Ski Federation attended the Worldloppet Annual Meeting in Finland in June 1990 to put the case for the acceptance of an Australian event into the Worldloppet series. Before being admitted, they had to demonstrate that the Birkebeiner Club could run a world class event, so three months later in August 1990 a 42km event named the Australian International Ski Marathon was held at Falls Creek together with a 21km Birkebeiner race and a 7km event called the Birkebeiner Lite. The event was approved by delegates from USA, Norway and Austria, in 1991 Australia became the 12th member of Worldloppet, with the condition that there had to be a name change. After some late night discussion allegedly involving red wine from North East Victoria the main event became the 42km Kangaroo Hoppet, with the minor events being the 21km Australian Birkebeiner, and 7km Joey Hoppet. In the winter of 1991, the first Kangaroo Hoppet was held. It was a great success and has been a regular fixture on the international ski calendar ever since. It features the main 42km event as well as a 21km event and a 7km event. The Hoppet brings the Australian snowfields to an international audience. In 1997 the Men's Winner was Paul Gray from Australia in a time of 1:43:07. The winner of the Women's event was Camille Melvey of Australia in a time of 2:06:58.This poster is significant because it documents an event which brings international attention to Falls Creek and the surrounding region.A large poster featuring a main image of many skiers on the slopes, with a larger image of a female skier superimposed over it. A title is written in the top left section of the poster in orange text. Remaining text is in black. Patterson Lakes is a suburb in the City of Kingston that is built one kilometre upstream of the mouth of the Patterson River. The area is bordered by the Patterson River and Eel Race Drain which enters the Kananook Creek. The suburb consists predominantly of newer housing developments and the tidal canal system of the development joins Port Phillip Bay.Patterson Lakes and the Kananook Creek were previously part of the extensive Carrum Carrum Swamp. The area was once a source of fish and eels for the Mayone-Bulluk clan of the Bunurong people. Over time the area was drained and in 1973 investigations commenced into the development of a unique residential area that would be built adjacent to canals and waterways. It was originally proposed to be known as "Gladesville". The development would give the suburb's homeowners access to Port Phillip Bay "from their back door". Circa 1974, the area was rezoned from rural to residential and named Patterson Lakes. Development has been continuous since the 1970s with construction of residential housing, schools, shopping centres, marinas, a hotel and library.Laminated colour aerial photograph of the Carrum and Patterson Lakes region within City of Kingston. This 1993 image includes Patterson River Secondary College, Roy Dore Reserve, Kananook Creek and Nepean Highway. The railway line can be seen as it veers inland from Eel Race Road, Seaford. The section of Palm Beach Drive, Curlew Point Drive, Snapper Point Drive, Clipper Island and Myola Street in Patterson Lakes appears to be a recent development with many spare blocks and new houses under construction.patterson lakes, seaford, kananook creek, carrum carrum swamp, canals and waterways -

Owner: Ernie Andrews (potato man). House was shifted to this location. The Margaret Ball (Pre 1960s Houses) Collection was a personal project initiated to mark the year 2000 and arose as a result of the disappearance of many pre-1960s parts of Eltham due to development. Approximately 200 pre-1960s style houses that were left in Eltham between Main Road and east to Bible Street, between Cecil Street to the north and south to Dalton Street were photographed in late 1999. Not all of the houses could be photographed; some because the garden or trees blocked the view of the house, others because of rubbish or cars were in the way, some because people were working on the house or in the gardens at the time.Roll of 35mm colour negative film, 6 stripsAgfa HDC 200 plus-2eltham, houses, streets, margaret ball (pre 1960s houses) collection, franklin street -

Certificate, H. Hearne & Co, Printers, 1929
This certificate was awarded to Violet Murrell for a race sponsored by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria in 1929. Violet Murrell (formerly Violet Farmer) was one of the best female riders in Victoria, who won many events for dressage, show jumping and straight-out gallops at country meetings. She protested loudly that she was not allowed to ride at city tracks against the male jockeys despite beating them at country meetings. When she married Bill Murrell, a well-known jockey, they came to live in Mentone. Violet Murrell died in a tragic fire at her home in 1934 while trying to save her favorite horse, Garryowen, and her husband, who had tried to help her, died a few days later.Horse race award certificate awarded to Violet Murrell, riding Garryowen.
