The Orsat was returned to the Historical Collection by Len Taylor, former staff member of SMB. For a period of time it was with Gary Price who rebuilt the Orsat to working order. Gary used a similar apparatus at Sidchrome and Ballarat Heat Treatment Pty. The board was probably from the School of Mines Library, located on the 1st floor of the Administration Building in Lydiard Street. Changes have been made to some times for Tuesday and Friday. The E.J. Tippett Library is named after the late E.J. Tippett who was a long time President of the Ballarat School of Mines Council, and library advocate. In February 1985, the first sod for the new SMB Campus building was turned by the Minister for Planning and the Environment, the Hon. Evan Walker, M.P. The overall responsibility for the building rested with the Public Works Department in association with the SMB Campus architect, Ewan Jones & Associates and the builder, S. J. Weir Pty. Ltd. They put together the facility that is both functional and of a style that merges with the surrounding architecture. Jean Phillips was a primary school teacher in Queensland before visiting Ballarat in 1989. She was offered a position of Playgroup Co-ordinator at the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative. In early 1990 she was appointed as Coordinator of the Ballarat School of MInes Koorie Support Unit. Jean Phillips aimed t- get more students into mainstream courses and help them gain the necessary qualifications for employment. This scarf was commissioned by Ben Mountford who was part of the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History (CRCAH) based at the Federation University SMB Campus (former Ballarat School of Mines). Ben now works at Australian Catholic University, but before that he held a lectureship at Federation University Australia as well as research fellowships at La Trobe University and the Huntington Library, and a lectureship at the University of Buckingham. From 2008-15 he was at Oxford University. Up to eight scarves were made in the Ballarat School of Mines colours for various staff members for the 2016 Australian History Association Conference which was held in Ballarat. Costume, Ballarat School of Mines Windcheater, c 1980
This windcheater was worn by John Barker who was the son of E J Barker who from 1949-1960 was a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB). Then from 1960-1964 was Vice Principal at SMB and was Principal of SMB from 1964-76. Then from 1976-1987 was Foundation Director of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE) until his retirement. The Library at Federation University was named in honour of E J Barker. John completed a Diploma of Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education and a few years later a Bachelor of Engineering. John was a keen sportsman particularly enjoying hockey and sailing. He died as a result of an accident on 16 June 1994.This orange coloured cotton knit windcheater has a built-in v-shaped rib fabric inset at the top front. The rib is also at the round neck, cuffs and waist.
