Mary Hannah William Thomas married John Thomas at Sebastopol Congregation Church. John Brown (1722-1787) was a Scottish weaver who became a Presbyterian minister. Although self-educated, he prepared an annotated Bible, Bible dictionary and concordance, and a metrical version of the Psalms. His self-interpreting Bible appeared first in 1778 in Edinburgh and was reprinted many times. This photograph was found in the archive of Newman College, a residential college at the University of Melbourne. It is not currently clear what the connection is between Newman College and the Yallourn School. Was one of the teachers at the school a former resident of Newman? Or did a student from the school come to Newman later in life, bringing this photograph? The town of Yallourn in the La Trobe Valley Victoria no longer exists except in photographs, records and memories. Jessie Irene ROWE, daughter of John ROWE and Annie (nee PATERSON), married Joseph McKay ABERDEEN (a Technical School teacher) at Orbost in 1918. Her father was one of the first vestrymen of St James Church of England and her mother was a prominent church worker. It would seem an appropriate time of her marriage for Jessie to receive such a badge at the time of her marriage. John Rowe died 28-9-1920 and it is noted that Annie left Orbost in 1922. (ref. John Phillips) This badge was presented to Miss Rowe by pupils and staff of St Andrew's Church Kindergarten on April 9 1918. Miss Rowe was a Sunday school Teacher and pianist / organist? at the church. The Presbyterian Church in Orbost was officially opened in 1898. For many years the Presbyterian people of Orbost enjoyed the fellowship of the church and the children, in particular, were socially and spiritually involved. This item is reminiscent of that time.An oval shaped badge made of copper metal. Ballarat Teachers College commenced in 1926 with 61 students with the aim of providing trained teachers for rural schools. It initially operated from the Dana Street Primary School while the Ballarat East Town Hall was renovated for the colleges use. Gold locket with chain. Engraved on the back: 'Presented to G.A. Baird by the scholars of the Derby school'. On back of locket: 'G.A.B' No date given on locket but information from family states that he was the head teacher of Derby State School in the early 1900's. George Alexander Baird was born at Oxley on June 5th, 1870, the son of Mary Ann Young McEwing and William Baird. He qualified for admission for teacher training in 1892. He is listed in the Electoral Roll for the Division of Bendigo in 1905, living in Derby and described as a school teacher. George Baird married Doreen Elizabeth Wellington on 28 December, 1940. Nathan Frederick Spielvogel (1874-1956), teacher, writer and historian, was born on 10 May 1874 at Ballarat, Victoria. As well as his stories he published a number of books about the history of Ballarat. Spielvogel was a teacher, writer and historian. As a country schoolteacher, he traveled widely in the eastern Australian outback and also made a journey to London. Spielvogel gained distinction as one of the only Australian Jewish writers of his time. Many of his early books were best-sellers.
