Regt No 2453 enlisted 7.7.1915 in 5th reinforcements 24th BN AIF, awarded Military Medal 20.9.1917 at Westhoeck, awarded Bar to the Military Medal 14.6.1918 at TREUX near Albert, both times as a Signaller repairing telephone lines under fire. The Land Headquarters Cartographic Company relocated to Fortuna Villa, Bendigo in 1942. With printing presses acquired from a number of civilian organizations it printed the maps needed for the Australian WW11 war effort. These records detail which maps were printed during those years. The article refers to Mrs Doreen Crawford having spent 12 years as Assistant Secretary at the Bendigo RSL Memorial Hall until 1967, on leaving this job she took on a Visiting Officers role with Legacy in McKenzie Street Bendigo where she be looking after and visiting approximately 200 War Widows in their own homes as well as Homes & Hospitals. Page 18 & 19. The two photos re building sites pertain to the construction of the War Widows Flats in Kangaroo Flat about 1971/72. Page 20a. The B & W photo shows the completed War Widows Flats in Kangaroo Flat in 1973. This was a project by the War Veterans Homes Trust and the Bendigo RSL. Page 20b. One cord has a metal tube, the other end has a loop. 35cm from the loop end is another loop (it still retains a bit of oily cleaning cloth when last used.) One of the three cords has snapped. 2. The spoon was given to Maxwell Barry Cowden VX19297 2/2 Pioneer BN by an American POW. He carried the spoon tied to the side of his loin cloth. Max worked on the Burma Railway and in the Coal Mines in Japan, Senryu 24 and Fukuoka camps. After the war he could not sit on a chair for a long time and would just squat on the floor with his back to the wall as he had done as a POW.
