Kurt Winker was born in Germany in 1902 and was a survivor of the "Arandora Star". He was sent to Australia on the "Dunera" where he was interned at Tatura 1940-1945.A large white tree with bare limbs in centre of picture. There are fallen limbs at the foot of the tree. There are rows of other bare trees and other trees with green foliage as well as several tree stumps scattered among them. The sky and earth are sepia toned with a scattering of white fluffy clouds. Black and white coloured birds are in the sky and a black bird is perched on top of one of the branches of the tree. Walking in a line though the trees are eleven figures with red coats, black pant and white hats. Some are carrying axes on their shoulders. James Watson was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Defence Medal, Pacific Star, War Medal 1939-1945.Silver medal hanging from a coloured ribbon. The ribbon has a thick centre band of orange with three thinner bands appearing on either side, which are in order from centre to outwards of white, black and blue. The ribbon is also missing a pin at the top, so the material is open-ended. The front side of the medal depicts a relief (elevated from the surface) of a bearded man's face facing to the left side, and Latin text also in relief follows the top perimeter of the medal. The reverse side of the medal is a relief of a man on a horse carrying a sword. The horse can be seen standing on a shield with a skull visible just to the left side of it, and water can be seen on the horizon. The Old Identities' Association was a forerunner of the Old Colonists' Association Ballarat. John Brooksbank was a very early arrival to Ballarat in September 1851, which was not long after the discovery of gold at Ballarat. J. Brooksbank lost a dog in 1857 "LOST from the Half Way House, Smythe's Creek Road, a black bloodhound and kangaroo dog. Anyone detaining him after this date will be prosecuted. J. BROOKSBANK" (Ballarat Star, 30 December 1857) Another very early identity in Ballarat, James Oddie, advertised the sale of J. Brooksbank's hotel in 1860: "JAMES ODDIE & CO. have received instructions from the Mortgagees, to sell I by auction at their rooms, Dana street, on Thursday, 20th September, at twelve o'clock, All that desirable properly known as the , Halfway House Hotel, Together with all that piece or parcel of ' land situate in the parish of Cardigan and county of Grenville, containing 34 acres 1 rood 26 ½ perches, part of allotment 1, section 6, of said parish, situated on the Ballarat and Smythesdale road, and recently occupied by Mr J. Brooksbank. The property consists of a spacious stone building one story high, strong and substantially built, the internal fittings and arrangements are neat and complete. The house possesses all requisite accommodation for a respectable country hotel. In addition are stockyards, stables &c, all well and securely fenced. Terms at Sale. (Ballarat Star, 20 September 1860) Four years later Brookbank was selling his hotel in Lyons Street Ballarat: "RARE OPPORTUNITY.-FOR SALE the BLACK BULL HOTEL, Lyons street. Photograph of Legacy widows gathered around a table upon which one widow is dancing barefoot. It is probably a widows club meeting. Widows would meet regularly and it was an important social outlet for them. The newspaper article appeared in The Age on 3 March 1989.
