Photograph, Kew Bowling Club, Kew Bowling Club Committee and Champion Rink, 1929-30
Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Harefield UK, 1921
Copies of historic photos of school children going to the Anzac Day ceremony in Harefield UK taken in 1921. The Headmaster of the school, Mr Jefferies, arranged for the children to participate in the annual Anzac Day service at the Military Cemetery in the village. During World War 1 the No 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. He was featured in the widows' newsletter The Answer many times and his death was announced in The Answer in April 1997, he was 85. Many of the photos he provided were labelled as coming from Mr R G Neil, Photographic historian from Harefield. He holds copyright over those photos.A record that Legacy helped support remembrance of Anzac Day and fallen World War 1 soldiers buried in the UK.Black and white photos x 2 of school children attending Anzac service in Harefield in 1921.Handwritten label on reverse says '1921 The first Anzac day organised by Mr Jefferies Headmaster Harefield School.' Trophy, NWRC Barber Cup 1935
The North Warrnambool Rifle Club was operating in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It had 132 members in 1935. A noted member was the well-known local photographer, Arthur Jordan whose father, Joseph, was a crack rifle shot and was a member of the Warrnambool Rifle Club. The Barber Centenary Cup was presumably established to commemorate the Centenary of Victoria as the cup competitions commenced in 1934 and were completed in 1935. The competitions were usually held over distances of 300, 500 and 600 yards. It is not known which member of the several Barber families in Warrnambool at the time donated the cup but G. Barber was a member of the Rifle Club in 1934-5 and winner of the Gray Centenary Cup. W. D. McDonald, the winner of the trophy, was the Captain of the C lub in 1935.This item is significant as it is connected with early 20th century Warrnambool sport (rifle shooting). It shows what sort of award was given for competition winners and reveals the popularity of rifle shooting in Warrnambool in earlier decades, with two clubs existing at that timeThis is a sports trophy cup made of electro-plated nickel silver (now very tarnished). It was a trophy named ‘The Barber Centenary Cup’ given for competitions amongst the North Warrnambool Rifle Club members during 1934-5. On cup: N.W.R.C. Card - Bogong United Church, Celebrating Ten Years of Co-Operation, 1956
The Bogong United Church began in Bogong Village under a non-resident Methodist in the year 1946 as a measure of convenience. The book was produced for a day of celebration to mark the 10th anniversary of the Church. In 1956 the Bogong United Church met for worship in Bogong, Mongan's Bridge, Mt Beauty and Tawonga and for Fellowship & Service there were 7 different groups mostly meeting in Mt Beauty. Minister at the time was Rev. John Goodluck, resident at 18 Kiewa Crescent, Mt Beauty. The Bogong United Church celebrated 10 years of co-operation with the Methodist and Presbyterian churches and was one of the first churches to do so. It is also significant because it also states the problems the church is facing in 1956: "Dependency on outside support. Inadequacy in state school visits. Extension on Fellowship visitation. Unity with other United Churches. "Let's keep Christmas" campaign and Representation at national convention". The information on this card is of interest to researches / students studying religion. Yellow card, folded in half, with brown writing on all 4 sides. It includes: Back of front cover: 'Theme for the Day'; Back of back cover: It states that "The Church is / Victoria's first successful co-operation / one of three in Victoria / Part of a World Movement / open to all Denominations / Still very young. Also It Began "In Bogong Village In 1946 It Faces ...On the back cover: It lists when Bogong United Church meets for worship and fellowship & service."The Bogong United Church / Gladly Announces / The Tenth Anniversary / of the Methodist and / Presbyterian churches / Co-operation" Dated "Sunday, / September 23rd / 1956"bogong. united church. presbyterian. methodist. mt beauty. tawonga. mongan's bridge. john goodluck. -
