Photograph - Yarra in Flood from Willsmere, North Kew, 1923
Flooding of the Yarra Valley, including that section of the Yarra bordering Kew and Kew East in the north and west of the municipality, was a regular occurrence. Extreme flood events of the Yarra River are recorded to have occurred in 1891, 1901, 1916, 1923 and 1934. The Municipality of Kew's response to these floods was to enact planning decisions restricting residential development in flood prone areas following the floods of 1916, 1921 and 1934. While floods continued after the development of the Upper Yarra Reservoir (construction 1948-57), the regularity and extent of these inundations diminished. Original, large sepia photograph showing men, women and children who have gathered on a grassy verge, probably farm land, to look out across the flooded Yarra Valley at Willsmere, North Kew. In the medium distance are three houses that are largely submerged by the flood waters as well as a number of Eucalypts. Judging by the clothes of the spectators, the date might be 1901 or 1916, but probably the latter due to the hats worn by a number of the women. Document - Letter, Patience Whitmore, 1853
From an ABC article about and exhibition containing the letter from Patience Whitmore: The hardships and tragedies often faced by new arrivals are also detailed in this exhibition, especially in a letter written by Patience Whitmore who arrived in 1853... Widowed before she left Britain, she made the trip to Australia with her second husband and children, although two of those children and her second husband died on the way out. She married for a third time after arriving, and that husband also passed away fairly early on, with Patience following not long after. The remaining children were sent off to an orphanage. Even though that sounds like a terrible life, apparently, compared with the life she might've had back in Britain, Patience considered herself to be very lucky, which gives you some insight into what life in Britain must've been like at the time.Letter written by Patience Whitmore in 1853.emigration, 1853, patience whitmore, letter -
Bialik College
Newspaper article, 'Why Another College?', The Herald, 1962, 1962
"Why Another College?", The Herald, 28 November 1962. "With the opening of Bialik College Appeal this week it may be appropriate to ask why the appeal is being made to the community and what the college expects to contribute to the community in the future. After all Melbourne already has Mount Scopus College taking children from all over Melbourne and four or five other Jewish day schools in a system which is already one if not the best for a community of its size in the world. One of the most important answers to the question is that none of the existing primary schools, not even Mount Scopus, really serves the Jewish educational needs of primary school children in the northern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Even children in these suburbs attending Mount Scopus College spend several hours a day travelling and are thus deprived of valuable time for study, play or other extra curricular activities...."israel, zionist, hebrew school, shakespeare grove, fundraising -

book, first half 20th century
In the early 20th century, smocking appears in women’s magazines and sewing manuals on garments, domestic textiles and children’s wear. The 1930s and 1940s were the heyday of patterns and innovative stitch development. Embroidery has always had a great appeal to women, as it needs few tools. Historically the skills were taught within the family or in primary schools. Articles to make or embroider had been available in kits since the 1850s. Fancy work, the opposite of plain sewing, enjoyed great popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries. Companies which manufactured threads often produced instruction guides and patterns. This instruction book has been well-used. A small 30pp book with no cover. It contains instructions for embroidery stitches, including smocking.book-embroidery smocking handcraft needlework -
