Station Sign - Puffing Billy Direction Trains At Menzies Creek, a Puffing Billy train has had to pass another train since 1966, due to a single line in operation from Belgrave or Emerald / Lakeside / Cockatoo / Gembrook to enable more trains to operate. When two trains passed at Menzies Creek, to assist passengers to travel on the correct train, this sign was erected. The arrows pointed towards the direction of travel as well as the locomotive that was hauling the train. This sign dates from 1975 when the line was re-opened to Lakeside. John Dudley was a well-known local artist who lived in the Shire during the 50s, 60’s and 70s. He was represented by Wiregrass Gallery in Eltham. Formerly two separate galleries: The Eltham Gallery and The Wiregrass Gallery. The Wiregrass Gallery opened on 4th February 1977 at Station Entrance, Eltham, Victoria and closed on the 19th November 1989 when its lease expired. The gallery then moved in early 1990 to 559 Main Road Eltham, the premises of the Eltham Gallery and from then on operated under the name Eltham Wiregrass Gallery. This image perfectly captures the Botanical Gardens in late afternoon light. The Statuary Pavilion was built following a bequest from James Russell Thompson, who was originally from Scotland. The Cenotaph is one of the collection of war memorials in Sturt St, Ballarat, and was erected in 1948. St Andrew's Kirk was first constructed in 1862-4, and the spire added in 1884. A small conservatory at the Eureka Stockade Gardens housed begonias which did not quite 'make the grade' to be shown at Cuthbert House at the Botanical Gardens. Visiting this hothouse was sometimes a way to 'beat the crowds'. Mrs Strange's photograph shows these begonias were still worth seeing. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. The former City of Kew in Victoria issued badges to council employees performing public roles. The Society has other badges issued by the City for roles such as Parking Attendant, Swimming Pool Attendant etc. Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. The Arthur Dear Collection contains memorabilia - tickets, programmes, invitations - as well as his identification badge. Items in the collection dates from the 1940s to the 1960s. The Kew Recreation Hall (Wellington Street) and later the Kew City Hall (Cotham Road) were major locations in suburban Melbourne in the postwar period for civic and private events including theatre productions and exhibitions. The Arthur Dear Collection (in conjunction with the scrapbooks compiled by Marion Tilley) provide a comprehensive snapshot of performing arts in Kew during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. The collection includes valuable data about performances, performers, directors etc., during this period. A nickel and enamel identification badge issued to the hall keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall by the City of Kew. While a later inscription suggests that the photo dates from 1908, by that stage, according to the Sands & McDougall Directories, the forge on the corner of Cotham and Mont Victor Roads had been taken over by H. Wright. F.G.A. Barnard in his Jubilee History of Kew (1910) records that the well known Sandhill Nursery, had been established by William Holt early in the 1850s. Presumably this was an earlier business as by 1888 it is recorded that the business had become a forge. The forge stood on what is now part of the grounds of Genazzano Convent. The date is approximate. Tavistock was built c1890. The side windows on the front room are a later addition in a different style from the original windows. In 1897 it was the home of the Walker family; Joyce Walker later became matron of Mosgiel Hospital. In 1902 it became the first site of Milverton Girls School. From 1930s to 1960s it was home to Miss Marjorie Vahland, a locally well-known nursing sister. Reg PRESTON (1917-2000) Born Bellevue Hill, Sydney, New South Wales Reg Preston studied sculpture at Westminster School of Art, London but was a self-taught ceramicist. His first solo exhibition was in Melbourne in 1958. He founded the Potters' Cottage, Warrandyte, Victoria in 1958, where he has taught part-time. During the 1960s Preston and his wife produced a line of pottery under the name “Ceres". He switched to stoneware in the mid 1960s and continued working well into the 1980s. Neville BUNNING The whisky distillert was at te foot of Mt Warrenheip. Situated at tje site of a water spring, it later bacame Cottonwood Springs. The Warrenheip breweries near the spring were well established when Mr Henry Brind, opened Brind’s Distillery in 1864. At that tome they claimed to be the first of its kind in Australia, and “the only place where pot stilled whisky was manufactured in the colony.” This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Introduced in 1974, the Braille Book of the Year was created to both acknowledge excellence in writing as well as raise the profile of Braille books. In 1991, the award was won by Trevor Hay for his book 'Tartar City Woman: scenes from the life of Wang Hsin-ping, former citizen of China'. The Narrator of the Year award went to Paul Karo for 'The Rise and Fall of Alan Bond'.
