One Hundred page book with nine fold out plates tipped in, green card titled "The Westinghouse Brake - Reference Book", published by Westinghouse Brake Co. in 1904. Text has been sewn into sections and then bound into the book. Plate inside front cover, has been printed in colour showing the extent of the use of the Westinghouse brake system that had been adopted on the various railways. Plat 110E (page 43) has an orange plastic component acting as a brake handle and showing how the various ports and parts interrelated in the valve. Inside the back cover are two loose folded sheets, plate 209 and 209A, Improved triple valve and the "Graduating Release Valve", dated August 1905. Covers compressed air brake systems on railway trains, showing how they are designed, operated, parts listing and has a number of pasted in erratum in the book. Two Newspaper clippings pasted onto a single sheet of paper with two Punch holes on the left hand side, with one hole through each cutting. First clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, Monday, 28/4/1971 about a plan by Mr Donald Fraser of Lindfield (NSW) to retain the tramway around Lake Wendouree and use Sturt St. as well as Ripon St. Item has map (see image) showing the proposed route and some comments about tramway museums, museums in general and static preservation. Part of the item in the first column is missing. Second cutting dated 3/5/1971 with headline about the possible revival of horse drawn trams in Ballarat. Item also looks at Council's Tourism Committee considerations for retaining trams in Ballarat, relaying lines, reconditioning overhead, looks at costs of running horse drawn trams versus electric trams. Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. Nicholas Caire was active as a photographer in Australia from 1858 until his death in 1918. His vision of the Australian bush and pioneer life had a counterpart in the works of Henry Lawson and other nationalist poets, authors and painters.Albumen silver photograph mounted on board‘The subject of this illustration is situated in one of the wildest and most romantic places in the Gipps Land ranges, about midway between Mount Munday and Mount Juliet.
