In February 2001 the National Council for the Centenary of Federation called upon Australians to nominate someone whom they felt had significantly affected their lives, their community or our country. Thousands of these heroes and quiet achievers were selected. Betty Churcher, a member of the National Council, chaired the Peoplescape Selection Panel. Nominators then made life size, cutout figures to represent their "hero". The sculptures were installed in alphabetical order, on the hill at Parliament House and down to the Federation Mall in Canberra, each with a plaque at its base outlining the individual's achievement. This portrait was painted by Betty Barberis to represent her mother "Dolly" Barton. Dolly raised 12 children, lived through 2 World Wars and the depression. She kept the family dairy farm running whilst her husband was serving in World War 2 whilst still supporting the war effort through the Red Cross and CWA and the church guild. Betty’s great body of work included landscapes, banners, millinery, ceramics, and a bronze sculpture of her husband Vern Barberis who was a fellow schoolteacher and represented Australia as a weightlifter, winning a bronze medal at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. She was also an art teacher of 22 years. Betty passed away at The Grange, Wodonga on 26 November 2013.This portrait was created by a renowned and highly regarded artist from Northeast Victoria for a national celebration of the centenary of Australian Federation in 2001.A large oil painting depicting a portrait of Dolly Barton, mother of the artist Betty L. Mrs June Hoffman of Mount Beauty recently donated this beautiful picture. It is the original artist impression of the Snowman outside Snowlands. The Snowman was constructed in the 70's after Mr S K Pearce commissioned Polish artist/sculptor Andy Lomini. Mr Lomini is well known for his oil paintings but also created the Big Trout in Jindabyne, one of the 150 'big' things in Australia. The Snowman was carted into Falls Creek in 3 pieces on the back of a truck.This item is significant because it is the artist's impression of a major artwork commissioned for Falls Creek.A photo of the original artist's impression for a statue of a snowman which is located in Falls Creek. A depiction of the MS Nella Dan an active primary vessel built in 1961 by the Aarlborg Shipyard PTY Ltd, and regularly chartered by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) in the 20th C. The ship ran aground in December 1987 and unable to be salvaged, had to be scuttled in deep water off Macquarie Island. See link above, this record. The ship was named after Nel Law wife of the Director of the Antarctic Division, DR Phil Law. "Ib Odfeldt (b. 1944) is a self-taught painter and sculptor spending many years inspired by and interest in ships and marine art whilst working as an engineer in the Danish Merchant Navy. His paintings demonstrate a keen eye for technical accuracy and skill. The balance and setting of his works have attracted interest in many commissions by lovers of marine and shipping works. In 2002 Ib was awarded the Southern Ocean Maritime Art Prize and this acquisition of the Nella Dan is presented in the foyer of the Tasmanian Maritime Museum in Hobart." (The ASMA 2019 National Exhibition - Maritime Museum of Tasmania catalogue). According to the Artist, the painting was part of an exhibition he held at "Melbourne maritime museum " (Polly Woodside) to celebrate ANARE (ARTIC SHOW). He donated two paintings of the Nella Dan. This painting was sold to Mr. Jensen when the museum couldn't accomodate the paintings due to a lack of space. Mr Jensen may have donated to the Mission. This book gives information on 1,100 War Memorials in Victoria. It was compiled by Bradley, Christey et al and produced for the Returned and Services League of Victoria. War Memorials were established in most settlements in Australia after World War One and added to after World War Two and succeeding conflicts. The number of War Memorials reflect the historical importance of Australia’s involvement in world wars and because of our distance from the battlefields they have become sacred places in Australia – de facto war cemeteries. The book includes information on the Warrnambool War Memorial and those in our area. This book is of interest as it gives details on War Memorials and includes all those in the Western District of Victoria. It will be useful to researchers of social and military history. This is a portrait of Professor Michael Cousins in his role as Dean of the Faculty of Pain Medicine at ANZCA (1999 - 2002). The portrait was unveiled at a College ceremony/meeting on 30 July 2003. The portrait was commissioned by FPM to mark the Deanship of Prof Cousins. Gary Lee Gaston is an Australian visual artist who was born in 1938. He is a painter, teacher and sculptor.
