After some delay in receiving funds, work started on the bridge approaches in early September 1959. Traffic was still using the old bridge upstream. On Sunday, 20 September 1959, heavy flooding occurred in the stream and at 3:53 pm the old bridge was washed out. This photo was taken the day after. This is a book given in 1860 to Miss M. Davidson by L.H.R Miss M. Davidson would most likely be Margaret Milne Davidson (1839-1928) who was born in Kirremuir, Scotland and was the daughter of James and Isabella Davidson of Woodend near Cassadys Bridge on the outskirts of Warrnambool. She never married. The identity of ‘L. H. R.’ is unknown. This book is significant firstly because of its antiquarian interest (an 1857 publication) and secondly because of its connection to Margaret Davidson. Her father and uncle and their families were pioneer settlers in Warrnambool and thus of great importance in our history. This is a hard cover book of 53 pages. The cover is brown with an ornamental pattern impressed into the front cover and gold lettering on the spine. The book has a Preface, an Introduction, 21 chapters of text by Rev. Albert Barnes and an Index. It has a colour fold-up map of Palestine. There is a stamp of the Warrnambool & District Historical Society on the first page and an inscription in black ink. Christoher Watson's Eltham Hotel, cnr Maria Street (Main Road) and Pitt Street, Eltham. Christopher Watson in centre (bareheaded). Reproduced on p60 of 'Pioneers & Painters' The hotel was constructed in the 1850s immediately following the discovery of gold in Victoria. The original founder, a Mr Warren. engaged a builder named Wallace, to erect the hotel, and being unable to finance it, the story goes, handed it over to Mr Wallace, who finished the job, and received the first licence. The building was constructed of hard basaltic blue stone, quarried in the Eltham district, and partly of bricks made at Eltham. At that time the town owned not only an hotel, but a flour mill, a brewery, a brickworks, and other important industries. The hotel was carried on for the benefit of the first owners for over 30 years and was then purchased by Mr Chris Watson. The hotel was in the early days a well-known resting place for the gold diggers during the gold rush at Woods' Point. A new hotel was erected on the same site by Mr H. This 1860s book of classic fiction was deemed suitable as a second prize to a student of Latin, Daniel B Sellers. Sellers was a student at the National School in Warrnambool and received this prize in December 1861.The book is locally significant for its role in the education of local students. The National School of Warrnambool was part of the early history of the city and connected to the access to, and growth of, education in Warrnambool. Book, brown covers, embossed with borders and patterns and gilt decoration and titles. The book includes illustrations. Handwritten inscription on the front paste-down page. The opposite page has a stamped and a handwritten inscription. The book was presented as a prize to a Latin student at the National School, Warrnambool in 1861.
