Mr A J Horan was Head Teacher at Linton State School from 1895 to 1909. Lena Allan, one of the pupils identified in the photograph, later became a teacher at the school.Original sepia photograph of group of school children with male teacher dressed in suit and tie standing at left hand side. Some of the pupils - Lena Allan, Lily Ball, Pearl Nelson, Clarice White and Pet Todd - are identified (hand writing in biro) on the front of the photograph. On the reverse of the photograph there is a lengthy inscription written by Mrs Stella Surman. Ethel Bersey was born at Linton in 1882. She married James Wishart in 1910. George Bersey was born at Linton in 1887, and married Wilhelmina Collins in 1910.Black and white copy of original photograph which shows a woman seated slightly sideways on a chair, with her hand resting on a table, and a man standing behind her, one hand in his pocket and the other appears to be resting on the back of the chair. Mary Linton, nee Dunlop, was born in 1809 the West Indies, and married Joseph Linton in Scotland when she was eighteen. Mary and Joseph Linton migrated to Victoria in 1839, and took up a pastoral lease in the Wardy Yaloak district which they called Emu Hill. They had eleven children, ten of whom survived to adulthood. Mary died in Ballarat in 1887. The township of Linton derives its name from this family. Janet Angus was born in Linton and was a daughter of John Angus, a miner, and his wife Wilhelmina (nee Statemann) who ran a draper's shop in Linton. Janet married Richard Egan in Western Australia in 1898. She died in Western Australia in 1949. The Cochranes had six chilfren, at least two of whom became teachers in Linton. Hugh Taylor Cochrane was a shareholder in the Good Hope Company at Linton in 1862. During World War II, the School Committee organised the digging of trenches at the school as a precaution against enemy air raids. The trenches were filled in at the end of the war in 1945.
