Programme of an Annual Demonstration by Junior Legatees of Legacy Club, Melbourne, held at the Melbourne Town Hall on Tuesday, 22nd October 1940. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. This book is a record, made in honour of deceased Legatees, who have given service to the cause of Legacy. This is labeled Book 3. There are two similar books on display at Legacy House Melbourne.This is a record of Legatees who have given up their spare time to assist the families of deceased service personnel.Black hardcover book, white pages with floral border. Back cover has some scuff marks at the top. Inside front and back cover is decorated with a coloured pattern.Front cover, title and Legacy logo embossed in gold, thin indented rectangular border. Spine has 5 raised horizontal bars set at equal distance down the spine. The raised bars have an indented, horizontal thin line along the top centre and bottom of each bar. These raised bars are interspersed with an indented floral arrangement. At the top and bottom of the spine are two horizontal indented thin lines (2mm apart). For those interested in the history of Melbourne Legacy this book is a must read. Filled full of larger than life characters and the good will of many volunteers and benefactors of Legacy. The book should be read in conjunction with Part One (item 00363). These type written sheets were set in order and put together by some members of The Advisory, History And Tradition Committee (Melbourne Legacy).Significant in that this is a scholarly attempt at recording the early history (1932-1944) of Melbourne Legacy. A card given to Legatees by the Comradeship Committee in 1939. 'Dear Legatee, Another year of Legacy has passed, another year of Service has commenced. May it continue to bring you much happiness in the appreciation of a great Comradeship. Comradeship Committee, 1939. The poem on the reverse says: 'I shall pass through this world but once, Any good thing that I can do, or any kindness That I can show any human being, Let me do it now and not defer it, For I shall not pass this way again.' The notation H15 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. An alphabetical list of members of Legacy in 1932, with 170 names. The second list has the member name, their membership number, a business address and personal address. One of the few lists found that include the rank of the Legatee. Early in Legacy's creation it was determined that importance was not to be placed on the rank of the Legatee and all were seen as equals. The notation H16 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Only the first page of the address list has been scanned as an example.This is one of the first documents that document the early Legacy Club. A list of 22 members of the ILC who had served in the second world war and their details if known. A second note mentions that of 42 ILC members, there were 33 that served in the second world war. 12 in the AIF, 12 in the AMF, 8 in the RAAF, and 1 in the Indian Army. The balance were in reserved occupations or had ill health. Ranks held included 2 Majors, 2 Captains, 2 Lieutenants, and 1 pilot officer. Also noted was that 2 became POWs and one in the RAAF served in the No 10 Squadron. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. Was in a folder of material collated about the ILC by an early archive committee.
