Howard Murray (Pat) Lightfoot (1904-1991) served as President for the Association for the Blind in 1952-1954 and 1964-1972 respectively. He joined the Association in 1938 as a sighted member of the General Committee, and was part of the group that dealt with the breakdown of a uneasy financial agreement that existed between the RVIB and AAB, the incorporation of the AAB under the Charities Act and the development of a rehabilitation centre at Kooyong for those who wished to have support without a residential component. After losing his father at an early age, Pat Lightfoot began working as an office boy for Nicholas Pty Ltd, later studying and becoming an accountant - such skills highly needed by the newly incorporated Association. According to 'No Sight, Great Vision', he was a highly skilled communicator, whose friendly and approachable manner won over most of those who opposed his presence on the general committee due to his sight. His support for and recognition of the work done by Mr Paterson led to him standing aside for the position of President and nominating his friend until the Committee overrode him in 1952. His appointment signaled a change in how the organisation was run, and introduced John Wilson as Secretary as well as Stan Horsfall as Treasurer in 1953, which helped move the administration style from social volunteering to business thinking. Health concerns caused him to resign in 1954, however when his health improved he rejoined the Committee in 1958 and again became a key worker in keeping the organisation financially healthy. The "H.M. Lightfoot Centre" - a two storey building attached to Paterson Hall was named after him. Alexander Butters enlisted on 12 November 1914 as a gunner. He was awarded a Meritorious Service medal for his "determination and courage .....setting a splendid example to his men..." on the SOMME. 'Aussie' (1918- circa 1929) was a commercial magazine of opinion, review and entertainment. It was edited by Phillip Harris and published in France 1918 - 1919 on a small printing press that Harris brought with him to France. Initially the print run was only 10,000 copies, but soon it reached 60,000 and later 100,000. The magazine celebrated a distinctive 'Aussie' identity through language, humour and imagery. It distributed news, provided light-hearted ways of seeing the war experience and gave soldiers an outlet to express dissent or dissatisfaction. It also provided a voice for Australian authors such as Banjo Paterson, C.J. Dennis and Bernard O'Dowd. (Ref Museum Victoria)This magazine provides an Australian soldiers' view of the political and world climate during World War I, and also represents the bond between Australian soldiers. The magazine celebrated a distinctive ?Aussie? identity, through language, humour and their assertion of what it meant to be an Australian. It allowed news to be distributed, gave the soldiers an outlet to express any dissent or dissatisfaction, thus preventing any greater form of rebellion and promoted Australian authors like Banjo Paterson, C.J. The Bostock, Manifold and Aitkin families were all pioneering families in the Western District of Victoria almost from the time of settlement. They leased and owned vast tracts of land and operated businesses around the district, often associated with the farming industry. This document is dated 5th July 1865 and is an assignment of stock by way of mortgage. Augustus Bostock is the mortgagor with James William Manifold Aitkin and Ernest Bostock as mortgagees. At various times they were involved in running businesses together, in particular the Aitkin and Bostock store and flour mill. Three of the Bostock men were married to three of the Aitkin sisters. The amount in question is £2157/3/2 and surety is 8000 sheep and their increase, presently running at Coomete. The penciled in details on the document refer to Robert Brand Paterson who was later in business with Aitkin This is one of a number of documents which relate to the Bostock family who were one of the most important pioneering families of the Western District. They owned and leased various properties around Warrnambool and were involved in many aspects of social and business life. The document itself is indicative of its time and provides an insight into the details and terms of such documents at the time.Large grey coloured, lined hand written document over four pages. As part of the National Trust's Australian Heritage Festival 2021, the Kew Historical Society and the Villa Alba Museum collaborated to mount a fashion and design exhibition. The theme of the exhibition took its focus from the year-long program at the Museum featuring the use of flowers in design. The walls and ceilings of the house are notable for their use of floral and narrative painted decoration produced, in the early 1880s, for William and Anna Maria Greenlaw by the Melbourne art decoration firm the Paterson Brothers. The examples of fashion and design from the collection of the Kew Historical Society were located on the ground floor of the house: in the drawing room, dining room, morning room and in the vestibule, or ballroom as it was sometimes described in nineteenth century newspapers. The Federation Markers project, jointly funded by the Commonwealth Government and Stonnington Council, was intended to commemorate the centenary of Federation by means of a series of plaques to be erected around the municipality. Following public consultation, 50 historically significant themes were identified On the 7th April 1928 this playing field was inaugurated as the world's first permanent sports ground for blind cricketers when the first ball was bowled at a competition between the Victorian Blind Cricket Association and interstate teams. Roderick William Mills, known as Saltbush Bill, was the inspiration for several poems by A.B. Paterson. Born at Balnarring in 1869, Mills earned the title of Saltbush Bill whilst working on a cattle station in Queensland. On these long droving trips, he learnt the art of cracking stock whips of many different lengths and sizes, a skill that earnt him £100 after a Melbourne saddler, J.K. Jennings, suggested that no man could crack a 65-foot stock whip in three tries. Saltbush Bill succeeded on his first attempt and decided to make a career in entertainment with his skill. Over his career he performed for royalty, travelled and performed extensively overseas and lent his skill to fundraising efforts, particularly during the war. His last concert was given in the Boomerang Hall in Dandenong in 1926.A local resident of the City of Moorabbin, Saltbush Bill was an ambassador for Australia and a literary inspiration to A.B. (Banjo) Paterson. Saltbush Bill, his wife Hannah Louise Porter and their 11 children lived in Old Dandenong Road, Heatherton, where Saltbush Bill and Hannah conducted a market garden for many years. There are many outstanding woman who have made significant contributions to the success of our club. Phyllis Sloan (second row white pants) and Lisa Robertson (nee Paterson - front row brown dress) are just two of these women. Phyllis recieved her life membership in 1986-87 and was the clubs first female life member. Phyllis is also the only club memeber to win 3 Best Clubperson awards winning in 1982-83, 1983-84 and 1987-88. Lisa received her life membership in 2001-02. Lisa has served the club in many varied capacities over a sustained period and has also won the club's Best Clubperson award in 2000-01. Barb Schumacher (Best clubperson 2007/08) is also present.

The Working Men’s College was founded in 1881 by a prominent grazier and philanthropist, The Hon. Francis Ormond, who donated £5000 towards the establishment of the college. The Council of the Melbourne Trades Hall then matched Ormond's initial donation by rallying its members. On 4 June 1887, the college opened in its purpose-built building on the corners of Bowen Street and La Trobe Street in Melbourne, with a gala ceremony. It became the third official provider of higher education in the new Colony of Victoria (the Melbourne Athenaeum was founded in 1839 and the University of Melbourne in 1853). The college was the predecessor to the current-day Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University). Adjoining the college in the 1890s were the Supreme Court of Victoria (later the Melbourne Magistrates' Court) and the Melbourne Gaol - both which are now part of RMIT today. A list of Scholarship Governors and Life Governors is included. The former have donated 250 Pounds Sterling and upwards, the later have donated 20 Pounds and over but less than 250 Pounds Sterling. The Patron of The Working Men's College was His Excellency The Right Honourable Lord Brassey. The President of the Council was Professor W C Kernot. In 1824, Hume and Hovell were the first Europeans to pass through the district and graziers soon followed, impressed by the abundance of fodder and water. The first cattle run in the area was settled in about 1838 in what was known as Swampy Plains. Later, this run became known as “Khancoban Station”. Khancoban lies in the heart of the high country and is home of Australia’s mountain cattlemen. This heritage is celebrated in Banjo Paterson’s epic poem, “The Man from Snowy River”. In 1962, Bruce and Jo Chisholm relocated from Bond Springs to Khancoban Station, which Bruce had acquired in 1959. Khancoban Hereford and thoroughbred stud progeny were keenly sought after whenever they were presented in the sale ring. Bruce imported a stallion, Comet, from England in 1964. Comet stood at Khancoban for 15 years and was the sire of numerous winners, including Cobbermine, Kelly's Eye, Boack and Starglow. Photographs demonstrate local Kiewa Valley residents enjoying a community visit to the historic homestead at Khancoban Station which holds significance to the early history of the area. Its heritage is celebrated in Banjo Paterson’s epic poem, “The Man from Snowy River”. THis collection of cuttings relates to the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company.The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company was established in 1868 when capital was raised with 2000 shares at a value of five pounds each.It was established to provide passenger, accommodation and a large stock and freight service between Warrnambool and Melbourne.. At the time Stephen Henty was operating three steamers along the coast and at the prospect of losing his Warrnambool trade with the establishment of the new Warrnambool company, he sold one of his steamers , the Edina in March 1868. The first five directors elected were F P Stevens, J G Crammond, WW Jamieson, R B Paterson and George Wood. Fares were from one to three pounds and freight was 17 shillings per ton.The steamers connected with coaches from the north of Warrnambool as far as Hamilton. The cuttings record the financial position of the company for the first ten years. This collection of cuttings is valuable as a research item as it documents the development and operation as well as many of the stake holders in one of Warrnambool's earliest shipping companies. The cuttings are from a range of papers including The Warrnambool, Examiner, The Warrnambool Advertiser and the Argus.Ledger book with blue pages which is lacking the cover. Edward George Dyson was born on 4 March 1865 at Morrison, near the Ballarat goldfields, the son of a miner. Dysons first collection of poetry, Rhymes from the Mines and Other Lines, was published in 1896 by Angus and Robertson. A second poetry collection Hello, Soldier!: Khaki Verse was published in 1919. Many of these verse were originally printed in the “Bulletin,” others in “Punch,” “The Leader” and Melbourne “Herald.” The book we hold at the RSL is the original edition and is No. 146 in our museum collection. Dyson contracted encephalitis in 1919 He died at his home in the Melbourne suburb of Elwood on 22 August 1931. Although a highly successful writer in his day, Dyson has since been overshadowed by contemporaries like Henry Lawson and A. B. Paterson , and also by the achievements of his brother Will Dyson , one of the leading political cartoonists of the early twentieth century.Hardback rectangular book. Eva Fisher was a valued member of the AFB and wished to commission a sculpture for the grounds in the front of Paterson Hall. Noted sculptor Ian Bow was commissioned and created Urban Cycle, a seven panel metal sculpture that follows the development of the local area. Prior to receiving the commission, Ian Bow went through a period of temporary vision loss, which gave him insight into how the sculpture could be appreciated by the blind and low vision community. The different stages are: Harmony - Two pelicans amongst reeds. Intrusion - Frog, kookaburra, mice, fish, lizard and butterfly. Expansion - Doors, windows and roofs under tree canopies. Industry - A factory with large chimney blowing smoke. Density - Multiple boxes, some with figures inside, are crowded beneath a bridge and dome. Decay - Boxes with broken doors and unfinished concrete. Alex Mamot was a White Russian immigrant from China, sponsored by the Association of the Blind. Despite initial language barriers, his determination to succeed was an inspiration to those around him, who developed new ways of teaching which took into account his growing knowledge of English. In these images Alex Momot is showing with a Russian typewriter, being shown how to make stools by Mollie McDowell, feeling texture of a new suit held up by Matron Agar, being taught English by Carole Laird, learning the alphabet with H. Mackenzie and greeted at Brighton reception by Ms A. Mann. In addition, there are two typed notes without images: - The ship Tjiluwak, carrying Alexander Momot and other White Russian refugees approaching the wharf in Melbourne. - On the wharf, Alex 2nd from left, is greeted by Mrs W Christian (left) a blind Committee member of the Association for the Blind and Miss Constance Duncan of the Australian Council of Churches. At the right is Sergie Bankovski, also a blind White Russian who acted as interpreter. Miss Duncan also initiated the move which resulted in the Association for the Blind giving refuge to Sergie and his mother. Standing at the rear is Major General S.F. A special luncheon was held for World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. In 1994 the author Patsy Adam-Smith was a personality of the year helping to promote Legacy. She attended the lunch and in one photo is with Legatee Eddie Jowett and widow Mollie Thiele (red jacket). Legatee Eddie Jowett led the Legatees in singing to the widows. There was also a pianist and a female singer attending. Two legatees reading a song sheet are George Standish and Maurie Lockwood. Legatee Lucky Luscombe can be seen in a false moustache posing for the camera. Also a photo of the hard work being done in the kitchen. Audrey the kitchen lady is obscured at far right. It appears to be Joan Miller with her back to the camera, and Sue Sargent (a widow who helped a lot in the kitchens) is on the right hand side. Other ladies names in the photos are not known. The following year more Legatees followed Lucky's lead and wore false moustaches to provide entertainment. Noel COUNIHAN (04 Oct 1913 - 05 Jul 1986) This lino cut is the second largest version of Counihan's Laughing Christ series of linocuts from the 1970s. Janet McKenzie in her book 'Noel Counihan' (1986, p. 25) uses Counihan's quote in his description of the Laughing Christ series of art works: "Once again the armies of the Western world were moving against people behind the image of Christ: they were Christian armies. The American and Australian armies in Vietnam had their chaplains with them and were slaughtering Buddhists, as well ironically enough, as Vietnamese Catholics". Counihan's fury at the blood shed and massacre of war behind the image of Jesus is evident in his ironic portrayal of a Laughing Christ. Was this what Jesus was about? Not likely! This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007. Arthur Edward Stevenson enlisted on 17 September 1914 and served with the 14th Battalion of the AIF. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 20 August 1915 at age 28. His personal effects of a belt, hairbrush, knife, postcards and photos were returned to his brother John in June 1916. Later that year, John Stevenson wrote to the Officer in Charge of base records, asking for confirmation of his brother’s death, as he had received a letter from Arthur dated 27 August 1915, seven days later than the date on which he was reportedly killed. The Army confirmed that Arthur had in fact died, and concluded that he had likely misdated his letter. In 1920, Arthur’s sister Rachel wrote to the Department of Defence, asking whether her brother’s grave had been located and again querying the date of his death. Later, she completed a form that was sent to next of kin seeking information on deceased soldiers for the Australian War Memorial’s Roll of Honour. Arthur Stevenson’s death is recorded at the Lone Pine Memorial on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Honour Certificates WW1 - From 1915 onwards, recruits in many shires and towns in eastern Australia were honoured by local government authorities. A common form of recognition was the award of honour certificates. The first honour certificates were presented in 1915 and 1916 to men who had yet to leave Australia. The designers and publishing companies solicited business directly from councils. Publishers began to print two different types of certificates: honour certificates to thank soldiers who had survived and memorial certificates to commemorate the dead. D.W. Paterson, a Melbourne publishing firm, claimed they had supplied certificates to over 150 cities and shires in Victoria and New South Wales, including the Shire of Wodonga. Paterson also had the widest range of designs The certificate signified that the officials of the community recognised and shared the family's pride and grief. The certificate was signed by S. T Parker, Shire President and R. H. Murphy, Council Secretary on 4th August 1919.This certificate is significant as it recognises service given to Australia by Arthur Edward Stevenson.
