The book was used by Charles Bacon who studied at the University of Nevada in the late 1930s/early 1940s. Bacon worked at Bunker Hill Mines and Kellogg Idaho, before arriving in Australian in 1951. He worked for CN Myers, a company involved with paper converting. CN Myers was a family business (on Charles Bacon's maternal line). The Mackay School of Mines, Nevada was established in 1908. At the time of writing this mook T.J. Hoover was Professor of Mining and Metallurgy and Dean of the School of Engineering at Stanford University. Theodore Jesse Hoover, brother of the 31st President of the United States, was born in West Branch, Iowa, on January 28, 1871. He attended Stanford and received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology and Mining in 1901. Following graduation his professional career started with the position of assayer for the Keystone Consolidated Mining Company. After one year, he became assistant manager for the Standard Consolidated Mine, and a year later he was promoted to manager of the operation. In 1907 Hoover went to London as general manager of Minerals Separation, Ltd. This company was developing the froth flotation process for recovering minerals from ores. Hoover took an active part in the development of the flotation concentration process and authored one of the first books on the concentration of ores by flotation. After four years with Minerals Separation, Ltd., Hoover entered private practice as a consulting mining and metallurgical engineer with offices in London and in San Francisco. He was very successful and held positions of consulting engineer, managing director, director, and president of many mining companies in America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. He returned to Stanford in 1919 as Professor of Mining and Metallurgy and Executive Head of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy. His experience and ability in organization made him a natural leader. He was influential in the formation of the School of Engineering at Stanford. The School was formed in 1925 and he was made dean, a position he held until his retirement in 1936. As dean of engineering, he promoted a broad fundamental training program for undergraduate engineering students. Under his guidance, emphasis was placed upon graduate work and he was responsible for developing strong graduate engineering curricula at Stanford. While dean he continued teaching and his course, "The Economics of Mining," developed into a book which was published in 1933. He became interested in the functions of engineers and, with Professor Fish, wrote a book entitled "The Engineering Profession" which was published in 1940 and revised in 1950. In addition to his academic activities he was generous in his hospitality. Faculty and students alike enjoyed the annual field day and barbecue at his Rancho del Oso, near Santa Cruz. He was widely read and had a lively interest in all the things he encountered. He speculated on the antiquity of man and man's early production processes. This is an anthology of writings by members of the Warrnambool Writers’ Group. The group was formed nearly 30 years ago and has published several other anthologies. The book contains writings from current members of the group and many contributions contain reference to Warrnambool’s maritime and township history and present day affairs. The book is of some significance as the contents are by local people and refer not only to their personal thoughts and ideas but also to aspects of Warrnambool’s past and current situation. It has, therefore, social and cultural significance. This is a paper-back book of 85 pages. This is a book for children written by Ron Sproston and illustrated by Mem Taberner. The fantasy animal story takes its theme from the true story of the saving of the fairy penguins on Middle Island, Warrnambool from the depredations of fox activity on the island. The presence of Maremma dogs residing on the island acting as deterrents to fox activity has been highly successful in preventing the killing of the penguins by foxes. The book has been published by Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, Warrnambool and personnel from this organization oversee the Maremma program. Ron Sproston and Mem Taberner have both been involved with Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village for some years. This book is of interest as it has been produced locally and is based on the story of the Middle Island penguin protection program where Maremma dogs are used as deterrents to foxes. This is a soft cover book of 75 pages. This blazer pocket is from Ann (Price) Royal's Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College blazer. Ann attended CPLC 1947 - 1957. Blazer pockets were embroidered with the school crest and additional embroidery was added during a student's years at College to reflect school colours and leadership roles. School colours were awarded for participation and leadership in various sport, house and academic pursuits. Ann's pocket, and the accompanying authorisation receipt reflect her receipt of the following awards: Athletics Colours (1952 - 1957), Hockey Colours (1954 - 1957) , Cairns House colours, school colours (1957) as well as leadership roles as Prefect (1957), House Captain (1957) and Sports Captain (1956). Students removed their pockets after graduation to keep as a momento of their school years. The authorisation receipt indicates that Ann's family chose not to have the final embroidery for Aths 1957, Hockey 1957 added to the pocket - probably because these awards would have been identified at the end of Ann's final school year. This book is a 2015 transcription of a 1995 book by Helen Tolcher. It contains the story of the establishment in the 1870s of the Nappa Merrie station on the South Australian- Queensland border on the Coopers Creek. The station was established by John Conrick after he and three other men set off with 1600 cattle in 1872 from Koroit in Victoria, arriving at the new property site eleven months later. John Conrick (1852-1926) was the son of Patrick and Ellen Conrick who were farmers in the Tower Hill area. John Conrick had four sons who continued to run Nappa Merrie until family connections to the property ceased in 1960. This book is of interest as a record of the legend-making overland cattle droving feat by Koroit resident, John Conrick and three others in the early 1870s and of the establishment of an important property in Queensland following the overland trip. This is a soft cover book of 132 pages. The cover is multi-coloured with photographs of John Conrick and the Dig Tree site at Coopers Creek. A steam boiler like this one, made in the late 18th century, is often called a colonial boiler. Steam boilers were used in factories throughout Australia, mounted over similar designs of brick furnaces. This boiler is a fire tube type, in which the heat from the fire travels through the tubes and water circulates around them. Another kind of boiler is a water tube boiler, in which the water is inside the tubes and the heat of the combustion surrounds the tubes. The boiler in our collection burned wood as fuel but others of this design could also burn coal, coke, gas and liquid fuels. The boiler was made by T & F Johnson, boilermakers. In 1922 their factory was located at Coventry Street, South Melbourne. They were still advertising their 'Colonial, multi, vertical boilers, all sizes' at the same address in 1934. The connected pressure gauge, made in London by Dewrance, measures 0 to 400 pounds per square inch. John Dewrance is renowned as a pioneer of the steam locomotive in the early 19th century. He founded John Dewrance & Co. in South London in 1844. His son Sir John Dewrance took over in 1879. In 1939 the company became a subsidiary of Babcock & Wilcox, and was eventually owned by Emerson. How the boiler works: - A boiler is about two-thirds filled with water and heat is applied, in this case in the form of burning wood. The heat is transferred through the metal of the boiler to the water. When the water boils the steam rises to the top, and as it escapes from the boiler the steam pressure builds up in the steam space to later be released to do work; drive machinery such as ship and train engines, turbines, presses, wheels, and driving belts to operate looms and saws. The heat associated with the boiler can be used for preserving food, sterilising, factory manufacturing processes, and steaming wood for shipbuildin. Every boiler has several components fitted for safe operation: - - Safety valves - Gauge glass - Pressure gauge - Main steam stop valve - Water check valve - Blowdown valve - Manhole doorThe boiler is a significant item that gives us a snapshot of early Melbourne's industrial history. It is an example of the technological advancement during the Industrial Revolution where steam-driven machinery and motors could perform tasks more efficiently than manual labour. The makers were one of many boilermaker businesses in Melbourne during the early late-19th andearly 20th centuries. The maritime trade and skills of boilermaking are still learned and applied today. The Dewrance steam pressure gauge connected to the boiler was made by the London firms foundered by John Dewrance. He was renowned for developing the steam locomotive in the early 19th century.Boiler; a horizontal cylindrical underfired steam boiler. It is a multi-tubular design and is timber plank-clad, with brass fittings and pressure gauges. The boiler has an iron door at one end with a metal chimney above it. It is installed over a brick-enclosed solid fuel furnace. Two large, wood-mounted pressure gauges are connected to the boiler and have inscriptions. An inscription is on a red, cast iron plaque above the boiler door. The boiler's maker is T & F Johnson, South Melbourne.
