A rug designed to celebrate the exhibition of Egyptian art 'Life & Death Under the Pharaohs' from 'The National Museum of Antiquities' in Leiden, The Netherlands. It was made onsite at the National Wool Museum on the 1910 Axeminister loom. This booklet was given to subscribers to the Warrnambool Standard newspaper as an almanac for the year 1912. Warrnambool Standard Almanacs were produced from 1875 to 1930. They contain much local information on Warrnambool and district about government officials, harbour management, businesses, banks, churches, large landowners, schools, societies and organizations etc. The Warrnambool Standard newspaper was established in 1872 and continues to this day. This booklet is of high significance as it contains much valuable information on Warrnambool and district for the year 1912. It is a very important resource tool for those studying and writing the history of Warrnambool and district. This copy has no known original owner but came into the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society via the Langi Morgala Museum in Ararat This is a soft cover booklet of 116 pages with several pages of advertisements at the front and the back of the book. The cover has a white background with an ornamental blue border and blue lettering. The cover is stained and a little torn. The inscription is handwritten in blue ink and includes a blue stamp. A response to inquire in the local Leader newspaper established that the trophy was won by Les Pullyblack, who lived in Northcote. He would have been 18 or 19 years old when he won the trophy at Lilydale ANA Day Carnival. Les' great-nephews, Stuart, Mark and Brett went to school in Lilydale. The play was produced by EJ Carroll at the Athenaeum Theatre, the Australian premiere. The play enjoyed a long and successful run with Frank Bradley setting a record by performing as leading man for forty weeks. Frank Talbot had leased the Athenaeum Hall for several years before negotiating with the Melbourne Athenaeum board members to renovate the hall into a modern theatre. The work was completed in 1923. The theatre became a well-known venue for plays but later, as movies became popular a biograph box was constructed to house movie projectors. The theatre manager, Frank Talbot, who leased the theatre from the Melbourne Athenaeum, signed an agreement with British Dominion Films in 1932, to show only British movies. Hoyts Theatres took over the lease in 1955 and later the Melbourne Theatre Company performed in the theatre, bringing live performances back to the theatre for several years. Programs of the early performances of plays are a reminder of the original purpose of the theatre.
