Winner of Expressions 2004 Wool Quilt prize. The stitch as a measure of time is explored in this quilt. It is from a series i have been working on about my local environment. Shaped by time and the elements, Bow Wow Gorge us visited by more than 150 bird species.Quilt is a combination of silk, wool, baft, linen, and rayon thread. Two halves of the quilt have been hand sewn together and are a rusty red and grey in colour with small blue patches using plant dyes. Stanley Couzens of the Wathourong Community was commissioned by Geelong Wool Combing Ltd to create a painting of the You Yangs and Corio Bay which was then reproduced on a jumper. The jumper itself was designed by Jenifer McMahon using Merino wool from her property McMahon Farm Pty Ltd.Mens knitted jumper depicting an image of the You Yangs and Corio Bay designed by artist Stanley Couzens of the Wathaurong Community. Image of the You Yangs and Corio Bay is on the front of the jumper in colours including brown, green, cream, black, with white and gold stitching. The central motif extends to the back of the jumper. A rug designed to celebrate the exhibition of Egyptian art 'Life & Death Under the Pharaohs' from 'The National Museum of Antiquities' in Leiden, The Netherlands. It was made onsite at the National Wool Museum on the 1910 Axeminister loom. The rug was made at Albion Mill in Geelong. It was owned by Mr Angus Peter and Ms Mary Anne Downie, the parents of Mary Virr (the donor). They lived in Cobden. The rug was made at Albion Mills in Geelong. It was owned by Norman Downie, the uncle of Mary Virr (the donor) who inherited the rug after Mr Downie's death in the early 1990s. Mr Downie and his family had several connections to the wool industry in Geelong. He would send pieces of fabric out to Mrs Virr and her mother in Cobden every year. The samples were given to Mr Robert Anderson, an apprentice fitter and turner at the mill between 1960-1965. His mother, Mrs Lucy Anderson, sewed the samples into quilts in the early 1960s. The wall hanging was handwoven by Lilian Joyce Mann from hand spun fleece, natural coloured wool and vegetable dyed wool. Ms Mann owned a shop in Jacob Street which sold handmade soft toys and hand woven items. She was a founding and life member of the Geelong Handweavers and Spinners Guild. The hanging was handwoven by Lilian Joyce Mann. Ms Mann owned a shop in Jacob Street which sold handmade soft toys and hand woven items. The book was used by Peter Evans (born 1927) to record notes during classes in the Wool Classing course at Gordon Institute, 1939-1944. Mr Evans was from Hamilton, Victoria, where he continued the family business of wool and sheepskin trading. The book was a gift to Dr Grahame Abbott from the inherited estate of Peter Evans in consideration of his experience in the wool industry over 35 years at the CSIRO Wool Laboratories at Belmont.A bound cash book with a cardboard cover and maroon cotton binding. The wagga was owned by the great uncle of the donor's husband, George Stephens. Mr Stephens was a mining engineer in the late 1800s to early 1900s in Stawell, Main Lead (near Beaufort), Diamond Creek and Costerfield in Victoria. His last residence was at Bosterfield, where the wagga was used as a bed quilt in the mid 1940s. It may have also been used in the childhood home of Mr Stephens at Stawell. Mr Stephens saved the life of a blacksmith at Diamond Creek Gold Mine circa 1910.A wagga made from men's suits and coats, unpicked and sewn together. Banjo Paterson once wrote, ‘The musterers are fetching them a hundred thousand strong’. Well, not quite 100,000 strong, but there are 75,172 mixed age Riverina-bred merino wethers in this mob mustered for shearing on January 22, 1988. The sheep were owned by the Mountjoy family from Geelong Victoria and were running on Puckapunyal Army Base near Seymour in Central Victoria on which the family held the grazing lease. Contractor for the shearing, Jim Walker, Avenel, Victoria, former Australian shearing team captain in 1974-75 and 1978-79, recalls there were up to 21 shearers in his team waiting for the red eyes to arrive despite the mid-summer heat of up to 38°C and the blinding dust on windy days. Jim Walker thinks there may also have been some sheep in the mob from Portland Downs and Isis Downs near Isisford in Central Queensland. The biggest shearing he did at ‘Pucka’ was 87,087 shorn in 1988. The ‘Pucka’ base was established during WW1. During the Second World War the Second Australian Imperial Force trained there as well as the US Army 41st Infantry Division. It was also home to the 1st Armoured Regiment from 1949 until 1995. During the 1950s up to 4000 national servicemen at any given time were training there. In the 1980s the Army undertook a major 60,000-acre land rehabilitation programme as decades of heavy use had led to serious degradation. By 1988 when the photo was taken, further land acquisition had increased the area to just under 100,000 acres, 43,000 of which is still bush country. There are no sheep there now, and the old shed was bulldozed and burnt. There are thousands of kangaroos which of course don’t need to be shorn and would be hard to muster and hold for a similar photo.
