Melbourne LegacyNewspaper - Article, Violin bears memories of Changi's pain and spirit, 1989
A newspaper article with a photo of veteran Jack Geoghegan holding the violin that is part of Melbourne Legacy's collection (see 00080) at The Shrine. Mr Geoghegan was a Prisoner of War in Changi prison. He remembered playing in the concerts that the violin was used in. His signature is one of many, that had signed the violin. Background: This violin was played by VX30301 Dvr Roy Arnel, as a member of the Australian Imperial Force Concert Party, in the Changi POW camp, Singapore from 1942-1945. It is claimed that the violin, in its case was thrown over the wall by a Chinese civilian. Roy Arnel, a South African by birth enlisted on 7 June 1940 at Royal Park, Melbourne and served with 2 AASC Company as a driver. Victor Ernest COBB OM (14 August 1876-2 December, 1945) Born Footscray, Victoria Victor Cobb studied drawing under Bernard Hall at the National Gallery School in 1896. He was self taught in the art of etching, creating his own press and tools. He became known for his popular views of Melbourne and as a teacher of etching. Melbourne Grammar School marked its sesquicentenary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, a Talents Committed Exhibition was staged. This exhibition recognised 150 Old Melburnians who have made a difference to the City of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and the wider community in Australia and overseas. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin about Legatee Donovan Joynt VC. a long serving Legatee. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. This is a recount of the citation of his war service in 1918 when he won the Victoria Cross. 'For the most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during the attack on Herleville Wood, near Chuignes, Peronne on the 23rd August 1918. The article was part of an album of past presidents and prominent legatees from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees.
