The ship Speke ran aground on the coast of Phillip Island on the 22nd of February 1906. The ship was painted by Artist Woolston L Barratt in 1891 and hung in the saloon of the Speke. It was given by Captain Tilston to John Cleeland, captain of the rocket rescue team and the painting used to hang in his home Wollomai house on Phillip Island. It was restored by Mal Campbell to fix smoke damage.The Speke was an all steel ship built in Wales in 1891, the second largest 3-masted full-rigged ship in the world. She was delivering wheat to Geelong and confused a bushfire in Cowes for navigation lights. Annie Jessup, an artist, was the youngest daughter of the well-known Australian self-taught artist, Alfred William Eustace. Like her father, Annie created some of her oil landscape paintings on gum leaves. Wesley PEMBERTHY (1920- ) Born Broken Hill, New South Wales Wesley Pemberthy spent his childhood in Adelaide, South Australia. As an adult he lived in Bendigo, Ballarat, Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford and Perth. While in Perth he studied at Perth Technical School (1933-1937), followed by studies under the tutorship of Norman Lindsay in New South Wales (1938-1941). After service during World War Two Wes Pemberthy became the first Rehabilitation student at the National Gallery School, Victoria, undertaking research into the techniques of the Old Masters. He was the winner of the Sulman Award in 1955. David Armfield studied at the National Gallery School in the 1940s and turned to full time painting in 1965. RMIT printamking. He has won several art awards, including the Ramsay Prize - NGV School, the Redcliffe and in 1980 the Eltham Prize. Armfield is represented in the National Gallery collection, Art Gallery of NSW, Tasmanian Art Gallery, several regional art galleries across Australia as well as private collections. David Armfield first came to Eltham in the late 1903s on painting trips and used to camp on the banks of the Diamond Creed. He returned to Eltham in 1957 with his wife Joan who has subsequently become one of the district's potters, and built a mud brick house and studio in John Street on land adjoining Peter Glass. Painted from the home (or front) paddock which ran south to the creek. The paddock was used for the cultivation of lucerne and maize crops in the lower regions while closer to the house where Ainwick Crescent is now situated, it was a burgeoning market garden for the cultivation of all varieties of vegetables. The large pines beyond, sheltered the farmyard on the west of Gardenia Road. That complex can be partly glimpsed on the left of the painting. This is a directly painted watercolour relying on the use of white paper and transparencies to impart a feeling of morning light. The figure is the artist's mother for whom the picture was painted. William PEASCOD (1920-1985) Born Maryland, Cumberland, United Kingdom. Arrived Australia 1952 The son of a coal miner, William Peascod was born in England in 1920. He worked in Dapto and Wollongong from 1953-1980. Working as a lecturer in Mining at Wollongong Technical College and Sydney University, he was also an artist, writer and accomplished mountaineer. He published his autobiography ‘Journey after Dawn’ in England in 1985. During various periods between 1953-1959 William Peascod studied painting, drawing and pottery at the National Art School, Wollongong. In 1980 William Peascod returned to England. He died in 1985, while mountain climbing in Wales. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Ludwig HIRSCHFELD-MACK (1893-1965) Born 11 July 1893, Frankfurt am Main, Germany In 1940 Hirschfeld-Mack was deported to Australia from England as an enemy alien in the Dunera. He was interned at Hay and Orange, New South Wales, and at Tatura, Victoria. There he made a number of woodcuts that illustrated life under detention. Released in 1942 through the sponsorship of (Sir) James Darling, headmaster of Geelong Church of England Grammar School, Hirschfeld-Mack was appointed its art master. He promoted his pupils' self-knowledge, introduced them to avant-garde painting techniques, and encouraged wood-carving, weaving, musical instrument-making, leatherwork and other crafts. This is one of a pair of paintings by artist Mike McCrea, created when he was in Warrnambool in 1985. The painting was framed and sold by Patana Galleries, Paton Place, Manly Vale, NSW. It was later purchased by athe company of Master Mariners of Australia and who donated the pair to Flagstaff Hill. The pair of paintings are significant for their association with steamships and the Master Mariners of Australia group. Framed portrait of John Moule who was President of the Vision Australia Foundation, from 1992-1999. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the VAF Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Mr Moule is standing with his arm on a dresser, and holds a pair of glasses. A cake decorated to look like the Shrine of Remembrance. The event is the annual Fete in 1993. The cake was entered into the Melbourne Show and shows a lot of skill. It was used as a raffle prize at the 1993 fete held at Legacy House (see the article from The Answer). The article says: The 31st annual Club Fete was held at Legacy House and a highlight of the event was a raffle to win a spectacular cake depicting the Shrine of Remembrance. The cake, made by Mrs Audrey McMaster (friend of a former Junior Legatee) was a 1993 prize-winning cake at the Royal Melbourne Show. A depiction of the MS Nella Dan an active primary vessel built in 1961 by the Aarlborg Shipyard PTY Ltd, and regularly chartered by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) in the 20th C. The ship ran aground in December 1987 and unable to be salvaged, had to be scuttled in deep water off Macquarie Island. See link above, this record. The ship was named after Nel Law wife of the Director of the Antarctic Division, DR Phil Law. "Ib Odfeldt (b. 1944) is a self-taught painter and sculptor spending many years inspired by and interest in ships and marine art whilst working as an engineer in the Danish Merchant Navy. His paintings demonstrate a keen eye for technical accuracy and skill. The balance and setting of his works have attracted interest in many commissions by lovers of marine and shipping works. In 2002 Ib was awarded the Southern Ocean Maritime Art Prize and this acquisition of the Nella Dan is presented in the foyer of the Tasmanian Maritime Museum in Hobart." (The ASMA 2019 National Exhibition - Maritime Museum of Tasmania catalogue). According to the Artist, the painting was part of an exhibition he held at "Melbourne maritime museum " (Polly Woodside) to celebrate ANARE (ARTIC SHOW). He donated two paintings of the Nella Dan. This painting was sold to Mr. Jensen when the museum couldn't accomodate the paintings due to a lack of space. Mr Jensen may have donated to the Mission.
