A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. It was the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" event held on 7 April 1993 - the 70th Anniversary year for Legacy. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The photos show a group of students with wreaths walking up the steps of the Shrine. Also one of the Governor of Victoria, Richard E. Poster advertising "Music for the People" Sunday, March 5 (1953?) featuring images of Margaret Nisbett, Soprano, Hector Crawford Conductor of the Australian Symphony Orchestra and Gordon Boyd Baritone. Part of the Music for the People event during the Begonia Festival. Would have been displayed in an internal tramcar advert rack. Has been recycled by the SEC Ballarat depot to display a dyeline print of a1969 tram fare schedule glued to the rear with possibly another earlier version underneath. Flooding of the Yarra Valley, including that section of the Yarra bordering Kew and Kew East in the north and west of the municipality, was a regular occurrence. Extreme flood events of the Yarra River are recorded to have occurred in 1891, 1901, 1916, 1923 and 1934. The Municipality of Kew's response to these floods was to enact planning decisions restricting residential development in flood prone areas following the floods of 1916, 1921 and 1934. While floods continued after the development of the Upper Yarra Reservoir (construction 1948-57), the regularity and extent of these inundations diminished. Original, large sepia photograph showing men, women and children who have gathered on a grassy verge, probably farm land, to look out across the flooded Yarra Valley at Willsmere, North Kew. In the medium distance are three houses that are largely submerged by the flood waters as well as a number of Eucalypts. Judging by the clothes of the spectators, the date might be 1901 or 1916, but probably the latter due to the hats worn by a number of the women. The Municipality of Kew's response to these floods was to enact planning decisions restricting residential development in flood prone areas following the floods of 1916, 1921 and 1934. While floods continued after the development of the Upper Yarra Reservoir (construction 1948-57), the regularity and extent of these inundations diminished. Natural disasters had an impact on the development and settlement of Melbourne and its suburbs. Flooding in the Melbourne region was a regular event in the nineteenth and for most of the twentieth centuries. Changes in the impact of natural disasters could occur due to a number of factors. This collection of small snapshots, mostly taken from Kellett Grove in North Kew, provide provenanced evidence of flooding in the area before the development of the unnatural flood barrier that is the Eastern Freeway.Collection of 16 monochrome photographs, annotated on verso by different hands, of the flooding of the River Yarra in North Kew in the third and fourth decades of the twentieth century [1920s & 1930s]. The Sunbury Football Club, known as 'The Swifts' was formed in 1897 and the early matches were probably played on Munro's which was a stretch of land bounded by Evans, Barkly, O'Shanassy and Shields Streets. Later land adjacent to the railway line, now Sunbury Shopping Centre was where football was played until Clark Oval was opened in 1953. Since then it has been the town's main sporting venue and the site for the annual show and other events. In this photograph the football match is being played on the Clark Oval with the clubrooms visible in the background. Located in Surrey Park, this photo was taken about 1909-1912. The Surrey Hills Swimming Club formed in 1906 and swimming carnivals were popular from this time. The dive was created from a clay hole formed during brick-making activity at the adjacent brick works. From 1906 Carnivals were popular events. Olympic competitors trained here until Councils built Olympic-sized pools. Photo by William V Hill of Pembroke Street. At the edge of the church roof and on the horizon is 'The Knoll' on the corner of Union Road and Wandsworth Road. To the left of this is 297 Mont Albert Road, home of the Michael Parer family and further left is "Quamby", home of the Sherar family. This is easily recognised by the square viewing tower located on the west wing of the house. The Sherar family owned 'Quamby' from 1900 until 1925, when it became Mosgiel Private Hospital. Norman Carter took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert in the 1920s; many associated with events and activities of the Church of England. On the 27th March, 1942 'Fortuna House' was occupied by LHQ Cartographic Company, Australian Survey Corps. Fortuna was the site of the base map plant and during this time approximately sixteen million maps of Australian Territories in the South West Pacific area were produced for use by the Allied Services. Fortuna was purchased in 1951 by the Commonwealth Government and until 1970 the Survey Corps and Regiment became part of community life in the district. This event to grant the Regiment Freedom of Entry took place at the Queen Elizabeth Oval on Sunday 14th June, 1970.Booklet outlining the celebrations commemorating the Army Survey Regiment's time in Bendigo. Operation Float was an event run by Melbourne Legacy to take Junior legatees on an outing. It could have been to naval boats such as HMAS Cerberus or to a Yacht club. It gave the junior legatees the opportunity to see a naval boat in action, spend time on the water or try sailing. More images from the same outing are catalogued at 02479 and 02480. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. A typed letter designed to be copied and circulated to members of Stan Savige's 'old mob' recounting events in Greece and Crete in 1941. Legatee Savige was deployed in Greece and this letter recounts the withdrawal of his company and those of Walker and Wrigley. He mentions Thermopylae, Kalamai, and evacuation via the ship Costa Rica, which was bombed by German planes and sunk, which resulted in Walker's mob being lost. A photo of an Anzac ceremony near the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London in 1959 from a Comradeship photo album. The label identifies the Agent Generals (representatives) from Australian states in London at the time, one of whom is Legatee Bill Leggett. This photo and several others (see 01029 - 01032) of Anzac services in London are part of a photo album of Comradeship activities (from 1930 to 1977) see items 01027 to 01036. The Comradeship committee gathered photos of events and compiled them in a Comradeship photo album for Legatees to look through.The Comradeship photo album was put together by the Comradeship committee and records events that Legatees did and places they lived or visited. Some appear to be trips to visit other Legatees living overseas and social occasions held in different places. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association.
