Melbourne Legacy
Newspaper - Article, Enez Domec-Carre / Epitomised Team Spirit, 1998
Miss Enez Domec-Carre was the teacher of the girls classes at Legacy. This article was an obituary published in 1998 when she died of a stroke aged 90. She was a former Miss Victoria and was known for her physical education skills and for introducing grace and culture to Melbourne. In 1932 she joined Melbourne Legacy and became the chief instructor of girls' physical education until she retired aged 65. In the post World War II baby boom the Legacy evening classes were attended by about 400 girls. She helped organise Legacy Widows and Legatee wives to sew the costumes for performances. Among her proudest moments was a display by 1000 Junior Legatees at the MCG during the 1954 visit of Queen Elizabeth II. As well her work for Legacy she ran physical education, ballroom dancing and debutante preparation classes in Windsor, Elsternwick, Gardenvale and Geelong. She also held a position on the Board of Studies and as director of physical education in Catholic Schools. Recognition of her work included being awarded an MBE in 1971. And in 1997 she received Legacy's highest award, the title of Guest of Honour, for her years of service. See also Cat.No. 01300. Another copy of this article was found with 'Box 10 / JL12' in blue pen. Award - Object, Wicker cricket ball, 1928
This cricket ball is made of cane wicker and was used in cricket games with visually impaired players by people who lived or were educated at the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind from the 1920's through till 1972. It is a circular shape made of plaited strips of woven natural cane and is lighter than a conventional cricket ball. The hollow center of the ball contains pieces of twisted metal pieces which rattle as the ball is moved to aid players in tracking the ball's movement. The stumps also had bells attached so fielders knew when the batsman was out. Blind cricket was invented in Melbourne in 1922 when two blind factory workers started playing a game using a tin can containing rocks. The game soon gained popularity and the Victorian Blind Cricketers' Association was formed. Mr William Paterson, a volunteer worker and advocate for blind people for over 60 years, was instrumental in acquiring and developing the sports ground and clubhouse in Glenferrie Road Kooyong, Victoria on behalf of the Association for the Advancement of the Blind (now called Vision Australia). In 1928 play began on the world's first sports ground for blind cricketers, in the first official blind cricket match. Blind cricket is now played internationally. This particular cricket ball was awarded to William Paterson Esq in 1928 in recognition of his support in establishing the world's first blind cricket ground in Kooyong. On the front of this ball is attached a small metal crest with an inscription: 'Presented to W.H. Paterson, Esq as a token of esteem for his interest in Blind cricket being the first ball bowled on the cricket ground for Blind Kooyong 7. 4.28'.1 wicker cricket ball with metal shield attached and metal bells in the hollow centre'Presented to W.H. Williamstown Botanic Gardens- Hobsons Bay City Council
Photo - Williamstown Botanic Gardens - Alice Weatherhead, c1930
The Gardens were a popular venue for Sunday School picnics for many years. She was aged approximately when the photo was taken and her head can just be seen in the middle of the photo. Alice Weatherhead (Cochran) lived firstly in Newport and then Railway Cres Williamstown. She attended the Newport Baptist Church and the Domestic Arts School. At the time of writing the letter she was 91 years of age. She worked at the aircraft factory in Champion Road, Newport making the rear fuselage for Beaufort Bombers. Her father, Tom Cochran, belonged to the Williamstown Horticultural Society.Alice’s photos and written memories encapsulate the intangible heritage of the Williamstown Botanic Gardens. She recalls: playing in the Gardens; using them as her as a place for solace and thinking; while riding to the beach from Newport; walking in crocodile file past the Gardens from her school to the swimming baths, the ‘air of mystery as you walked through those wonderful wrought iron gates’; a place of courtship with the boy she later married. She wrote about seeing a purple flowering plant in a circular bed that was ‘spectacular and inspired me to grow it in my garden’. Black and white image of people sitting and standing together for the group photo. There are large trees in the background; a young boy standing with his hands behind his back at the back row to the left. There are two crosses (in pen) above the heads of two women in the back row on the left side.On the reverse of the image: Mother and G. M. Photograph, Darley Football Club Premiers 1938-1939
Darley football club was formed in 1919. Darley lies on the northern side of the township of Bacchus Marsh. It is part of the overall township of Bacchus Marsh but forms a distinct community within Bacchus Marsh especially in the early period of its history. The area is known as a football breeding ground and has produced many champion players at VFL and AFL level and the club has had sustained success over many decades in various competitions. For many years it played in the Bacchus Marsh District Football Association. From the mid 1990s it has competed in the Ballarat Football League.A black and white photograph print mounted on mounting board, showing a group of 19 players, 3 non playing officials and one child acting as the mascot arranged in three rows. A player in the centre holds a football with D.F.C. Premiers 1939 written upon it. Nineteen men are in football Guernseys, 3 are in civilian clothes. Two of these have towels over their shoulders and are probably trainers. In the centre is the third non-player who is presumably the coach. The photo is taken in an outdoor setting. The child is a young boy dressed in the clubs uniform and sits in the front row between the legs of another player. At the foot of the photo is, "Darley F. B. C. Premiers 1938-39". The Friendly Societies Carnival at Mentone 1916 during WW1 was arranged to showcase the local activities and raise funds for the 'Discharged Wounded Soldiers Fund' = £140 was raised. As elsewhere in Australia most of the local young men had enlisted in the AIF and some were coming home wounded - many were killed on overseas battlefields. This Parade was led by the Cheltenham Brass Band, followed by the Friendly Societies AOF, IOR, HACBS, PAFS, and ANA. The PAFS - Protestant Alliance Friendly Society - had 2 entries 'Fruit & Vegetable Display' and 'The Murder of Nurse Edith Cavell' both floats won their category. Ella Allnutt portrayed Nurse Cavell. The Carnival gave prizes for sports events on the Mentone Oval and a concert was held at night at the Mentone Ice Skating Rink. World War 1 1914-1918 had a devastating impact on many early settler families whose sons had volunteered to serve in AIF. 1916 many of these young men were returning injured or had been killed overseas The Community rallied around to support these men and their families by holding fund raising events like the CarnivalBlack & White photograph of a decorated float with a Tableau ' The Murder of Nurse Edith Cavell' in the Friendly Societies Carnival Cheltenham 1916Front Handwritten ; Procession ( part of ) to honour Sister Edith Cavell an English nurse executed by the Germans in Brussels (BELG.) in 1914 (1st World War)cheltenham brass band 1916, ww1 1914-1918, cavell edith, friendly societies, protestant alliance friendly society, moorabbin, cheltenham, dendy henry, dendy's special survey 1841, assisted emigrants early settlers, pioneers, market gardeners, marigold flowers, pharmacy, charman stephen, gettens mary, charman harriet, methodist church, primitive methodists, box william, box elizabeth, state schools, education, moorabbin shire, moorabbin roads board, city of moorabbin, kingston city council -

Ceramic - Artwork - Ceramics, Ballarat School of Mines Sherry Glasses, c1951, c1951
Marjorie Evelyn GARNER Although not a fully enrolled student, Majorie Garner attended Pottery classes at the School of Mines) run by Neville Bunning. She also took advantage of other classes offer to 'non-students' such as oil painting classes for women run by Geoff Mainwaring. These popular extension programmes promoted the Ballarat School of Mines and their Technical Art School, especially among middle-class women who would otherwise have had little connection with the institution. Majorie was married to Leslie Garner, the Principal of the Ballarat Junior Technical School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. Two hand thrown ceramics 'sherry glasses' with the Ballarat School of Mines shield in oxide. Article, Dogs and Cats and Comradeship, 1949
An article by Legatee Syd Birrell about comradeship. The Legacy newsletter in the 1940s was aimed at the young junior legatees. It encouraged citizenship and values of Legacy. This article compared comradeship to dogs and cats. Cats being poor comrades and dogs being very unselfish. 'Legacy was founded on comradeship . . . In return for any help which may come your way through Legacy, it expects you to help yourself and your families. You must work hard at school or at your jobs. You must be cheerful and helpful in the home; courteous and comradely to your friends and business associates; regardful of the rights and comfort of other people at all times.'A humorous article written by a long serving legatee.Print out x 1 page of an article in the Legacy Newsletter in June 1949.comradeship, junior legatees, syd birrell -
