Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski industry in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Items related to the Falls Creek Area in this issue include:- Cover - An image of the first Australian Winter Olympic Ski Team entering Bislett Stadium, Oslo during the opening ceremony on the February 15. 1. Lords Raceway trotting track was formally opened in November 1954 by Mr. Galvin the Trotting Club's Chief Secretary. 2. Clothes/cloth rationing was in place from June 1942 till June 1948. Adults were allowed 112 clothing coupons per year. A lady's dress used 12 coupons, a pair of socks 4 coupons, and a man's suit used 38 coupons. Other items affected by rationing were butter, tea, sugar, eggs, tobacco, petrol and Meat. Butter and tea were rationed until 1950. 3. Marong Catholic Church had its foundation stone laid in 1876, and the first services were held in1877. The church is now closed.1. Roma married Ronald Richard SMITH in 1944 Harry's father, James Cameron, came to Bellagoogan on Majors Creek in 1882. Bellagoogan was on Majors Creek near Orbost and was the site of the first race course. Like many others at the time, the Camerons bred race horses.Harry died in 1964 aged 75.Orbost Football Club through its many changes has always been an important social fabric of the Orbost community. In July 2013 Smeaton resident Ron Cosgrave offered to attempt to find Laura Villa. He wrote on 12/07/2013 "I have attached three photographs of Laura Villa as it is today. I am 100 % that it is the house in question. The changes are the veranda and numerous alterations and attachments. The key identifiers are the original roof line, the chimney, the trees and the background of the photo is the other side of Birch’s Creek with similar trees and the hill is Green Hill. Station Sign - Puffing Billy Direction Trains At Menzies Creek, a Puffing Billy train has had to pass another train since 1966, due to a single line in operation from Belgrave or Emerald / Lakeside / Cockatoo / Gembrook to enable more trains to operate. When two trains passed at Menzies Creek, to assist passengers to travel on the correct train, this sign was erected. The arrows pointed towards the direction of travel as well as the locomotive that was hauling the train. This sign dates from 1975 when the line was re-opened to Lakeside. First games played 1926. The Club was then situated in South Parade. Ladies were invited to join in 1927. The yearly fee was 1.10 sterling. In 1933 the green was officially opened by Robert Menzies. The clubhouse was finally completed in the late 1940's. By the 1960's membership had risen to the extent that a new site was needed. A site on the east side of Pakenham Street, south of the creek, was proposed but it was subject to flooding. It also operated simple accommodation, a cafe and apres ski shop. The business changed hands and the cafe had many names throughout its history.
