Flora Hill No. 4667 was opened in Ellis Street in 1952. In 1956 it became a training school for the teacher's College. In 1959 it was joined by students from the Bendigo Girls School. Elizabeth (Bessie) Mercer, a daughter of Henry Boyd Mercer and Deborah Mercer née Sinclair, was born 23/8/1873 at Spring Hill (near present-day Pittong). She attended Spring Vale State School where she achieved her Merit Certificate. She registered as a teacher in 1891 and completed further training to become a teacher of gymnastics in 1896. Bessie married David Brown of Chepstowe, and they farmed at Pittong. They had two children, Vera and Roy. Bessie Brown died in 1940. Bessie and her sister Emma were very involved with the war effort during World War I, and after the war they were presented with certificates of appreciation by the Linton "Diggers". The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". Four pages of memories of working as an unqualified tutor (1966 - 75) and later as a qualified teacher at the NDSN at Lister House Bendigo by Jo Pellisier. Three pages of memories of attending the first-year start-up of the NDSN at Lister House Bendigo by June Palfreyman from 1975 to 1989. PTS School 108 was the final school, when training was transferred to La Trobe University enabling trainees to embark on a University Degree course. Four pages of memories of working as an unqualified tutor (1966 - 75) and later as a qualified teacher at the NDSN at Lister House Bendigo by Jo Pellisier. Garry BISH (1950- ) Born Charlton, Victoria After training as a secondary school art teacher in Melbourne in 1968-69, Gary Bish moved to Bendigo, where he established the Potters Arms Studio in Epsom in 1972 while studying for a Diploma of Art and Design in ceramics at the Bendigo Institute of Technology, graduating in 1974. Establishing an independent studio in Epsom in 1972, Garry Bish has lectured in Ceramics for many years. Bish marks his work with his signature or an impressed 'B' with a stem like a feather, or in later years the Initial GB in a square. Miss Milne was a teacher at Linton State School for many years. It is understood she is the Assistant Teacher in the photograph of school pupils and teachers, c.1888. (Registration no. 179). Miss Milne's efforts at training the children for school concerts were often commended in newspaper reports. Linton Presbyterian Church records held at show that Helen Milne was a communicant from 1886, having transferred from Inglewood. The 'Ballarat Star', 2 July 1902, p. 6, reported that Miss Milne had been presented with a gold brooch and purse, as she had been transferred to another school and was leaving Linton. Photograph is part of Old Lintonian collection ; No. 67.
